So looks like the 10:03 Manc-Holyhead two years ago will not be the last loco hauled on the North Wales coast. Hope this is definite will be fantastic to get some more locomotive traction on there. Nice long distance routes they are being put on too.

Lol yes its definite, its only being run for the welsh assembly to get to and from meetings really, hence the addition of first class. Put posters up last night for the december timetable change and this service was listed on there, the return working will be in place of the 1608 off cardiff I think? either way gets to newport at 1623 for all stops to abergavenny.

Best bit about it is that Arriva didnt want to run it, they have already cut it down from the 2 return journeys a day that WAG wanted. There is no money in it for them, Grand Union are currently fighting the decision aswell. The 57s are getting repainted at some point too. The service would actually run quicker as a DMU as the set cant run at line speed over a lot of the stretch south of Shrewsbury, not enough brake force in the set. Did no one see the test run we had going sat in Newport a couple of weeks back ?

No point having 125mph capable trains if you can't go over 100mph!

Thanks to the OP for the timings, I'm looking forward to seeing these through Hereford, even more so travelling on them.

The southbound one will run through the platform road, not the middle as its less restrictive and quicker !! the through road is approach controlled and slower !! As for 100mph, the 57 set cant go above 80mph.

Tell that to Northern.

I'm not getting at the top speed, I'm getting at the fact that they can travel the same routes as 175s, they are 5 cars, 5 engines instead of 1, they are quick at accelerating, and would solve Arriva's chronic unit shortage, displacing 175s to work the Chester - Birminghams, which would release 158s for cover and to strengthen other services.

Or am I being too simple? :???:

Fair points there. There must have been some underlying reason why Arriva didn't get the 180s, particularly as one of the requirements for this service was to have First Class and the FC in the 180s is rather spiffing.

Ta for that The Planner, I would have thought the southbound through road at Hereford was less restrictive than the platform road, but there we go! Getting the northbound will do, although not having the southbound one done too will be just that little bit annoying!

Fair comments, I've not experienced First Class on the 180s myself, but surely a refresh would solve that? IMO, the 180s would have a better place on Cardiff - Holyheads than on Blackpool to where ever for Northern, they won't be able to fit in most stations either, I hear.

But hey, the DfT knows best......

I presume in theory no 175s (or 150s for the matter) to Brum from the new timetable as what works in from Chester goes back to Aber and vice versa, so RETB sector stuff only which AFAIK is just 158s?

Seems a bit of a waste to top and tail the damn thing especially as it goes via Crewe but there you go what a quality unit only railway we have - although possibly wise not to trust a single 57!?!

Well yeah, after all it's them (well the SRA I think actually) that rejected MML's plans for extra Leeds services, which would have been super helpful.

But it's other stupid things like the way they allocate the DMU fleet around the place that boggles people's minds. I can't see any logic in it, nor can anyone else.

The ridiculous franchise contracts/agreements get on my nerves too. How the DfT can expect rail to be a money-maker I just don't know.

Still, none of us will have to worry about it soon, the recession's going to scupper all of our bashing/photting desires. Maybe once that's through the DfT will stop expecting £1b+ premiums off franchises. Maybe...

Or not...

The Chester - Birmingham and the Aber/Pwelly - Birmingham services are different trains. Unless they plan to change that come December? Also the Brums are being extended to International as of the timetable change.

Got to top and tail really for maximum flexibility in case of random diversions and what have thou.

As for those Aber - Brum trains going to International, surely that means it's 90% of them turning back early at New Street and not Wolverhampton? ;)

:lol::oops:

I have actually been on a service which has made it to Birmingham, I had to bang my head on the door on the way out to make sure it was actually happening

I'm pretty sure there is a Chester service at around 1930 at Shrewsbury which now has Wolerhampton as it's booked destination!

Its actually done to get the Abers out of New St, plenty of platforms to hide them at International. Route learners are back and forth into platforms 1 and 5 most days at the mo

Aye, but it's fun to take the redundant waters with that particular service, given its awful record for actually arriving and departing at New Street!

Mind, a few years back on a HoE rover bash I got an ex-CT 158 (didn't write down which one! <() all the way from Birmingham New Street to Chester. By F**K it was boring. I think if I'd known how far it was I'd have flagged it! To get on an ATW service out of Birmingham though...:o:lol:

Was my day off so I didn't get to see that lol! According to a driver I spoke to there only 3 or 4 drivers trained up on the 57s and that they wouldn't be dropping their booked turns to drive it.

Ta to Snapper for this little update over on the WNXX forum:

57315 now at LNWR with nameplates removed and ready for re-paint into some form of ATW green (turquoise or whatever it is, it looks flipping green to me!) and cream.

One other to get the same treatment and two others to get something similar to BR Blue.

Ta again to Snapper.
