I've got a little bit of what you may call homework to do. And have these questions if anybody can help.

1) what 3 things must a train driver immediately do if their train is on fire in a OLE area?

2) At what speed would you pass through a signal section after passing a signal at danger and 1 thing you would need to take into account when deciding this?

3) 4 Times a driver would sound a warning horn?

4) trains being started by hand signal at a manned station, what will be the handsignals for the following?

By day. Close doors and ready to start
By night. Close doors and ready to start

5) In the wtt/stn what would 11+05 mean?

6) What detonator protection would you lay down if your train has divided and you are asked to leave the rear half of the train in the section?

Thanks in advance, I've had a total mind blank .

What coursework are we doing for you? I'll leave it.

What is the purpose? Are you on a training course for something? I could point you in the direction of the rule book and you'll be able to glean this information from there... If you need genuine help with understanding after that then PM me, but do that first.

If you're working on the railway please learn it....

If you can't answer those yourself then good luck with the exam. Read your course material or ask your instructor, that's what they're there for.

Firstly I would hope you wouldn't pass a signal at danger unless you were stopped at one and specifically instructed by the signalman to pass it, upon which you would drive slowly at caution keeping an eye for any obstacles/obstructions on the line. Depends on the circumstances of course

Sounds oddly like a trainee driver 'Front End Turns' exercise book. Please learn and understand it.

1) what 3 things must a train driver immediately do if their train is on fire in a OLE area?

a, Ask the passengers if anyone could lend him their mobile phone.

b. Ring his wife to say he will be late home and does she need anything from Sainsbury's

c. Dial 118118 (other directory enquiries numbers are available) and ask if they could text the number for Fireman Sam.

2) At what speed would you pass through a signal section after passing a signal at danger and 1 thing you would need to take into account when deciding this?

At the highest speed possible. You are in a ‘dangerous area’ and the sooner you get out of there the better. You will need to take into account how much crap you will be in for passing the signal in the first place and how many bottles of Scotch the signaller would need to keep quiet about it.

3) 4 Times a driver would sound a warning horn?

a. Late at night when passing the house of that persistent complainer who is always complaining about noise from the railway.

b. To wake the guard up and then laugh when he spills his coffee all over himself.

c. When you see a mate cycling along a road parallel to the railway to make him fall off his bike.

d. When in the depot to deafen your mate who has forgotten his ear defenders.

4) trains being started by hand signal at a manned station, what will be the handsignals for the following?

By day. Close doors and ready to start
By night. Close doors and ready to start

By Day – Two Fingers ( ie …… off and don’t come to this station again)
By night – Shouting ‘ …… off and don’t come to this station again’

5) In the wtt/stn what would 11+05 mean?

17, no wait 18, no, is it 14?. Oh bugger I was never any good at maths.

6) What detonator protection would you lay down if your train has divided and you are asked to leave the rear half of the train in the section?

The detonators that grandad got in WW2 from some Germans and that he has had in his shed ever since. They came inside large metal cylindrical things with fins on the back. They should be loud enough!!

On a genuine note, I'm actually going through a course at the moment, how would a hand signaller give authority at night? Would it be verbal? Obviously I know by day it would be a yellow flag, but I don't recall learning yet about by night.

I think that torches with an appropriate colour filter are used?

The railway lamps (if you use the word torch then the biscuits are on you!) don't have a yellow filter, certainly my LED one can only show red, green and white.

Depends on whether you have been told about the presence of the handsignaller before hand by the signaller and given instructions to just obey their handsignal. I would suggest if you have a questions like this that you should discuss it with you instructor.

Handsignallers Bardic lamps always had an extra yellow filter. It's a bit outside of my current experience as to what the modern practice is (though knowing Network Rail it's probably still bardics!).

WTT stands for Working Timetable and STN stands for Standard traffic notice (think its standard anyway), the '+' between the timings usually indicates ECS or at least it does on our diagram cards anyway.

Cheers for that, couldn't for the life of me think what WTT might stand for! Looks like I'm still safe to drive trains.

If you are already a driver i would be concerned, these questions are very basic and if you dont know them you shouldnt be doing the job you currently are.

I cannot believe that someone would actually post coursework questions on here, so that others could do their work for them.
Seriously, if you cannot answer these questions, you should be thinking hard about if you are really up to the job you are training for!

The OP hasn't started training though, see his post #21.

Whether there is any point in trying to get ahead of the game before starting, I don't know. The trainers won't assume any prior knowledge, in some fields such as this I'd have thought it better to do the training in the order, and detail, that the trainers put it across normally.

I'm sure that has been the usual response when this topic has arisen before, usually in discussions in the "Railway Jobs and Careers" sub-forum.

He says that now, but in a previous thread he claimed to be starting with GTR at Bedford on 8th July.

So you can't actually answer any ? If the point was to see if you could answer them then you have spectacularly failed.

Its better to answer what you can and then go through the answers than getting other to do it for you.

Your possibly going to be out there all alone; unless there's a Guard OBS in back cab who can google it for you.
