I am just trying to make a list of all railway stations that are next to each other and have a railway line going between them but have no direct train services at all between the two stations despite being next to each other.

So far i can think of:

Berwick Upon Tweed - Chathill
Birmingham New Street - Small Heath
Exeter St James Park - Pinhoe
Fitzwilliam - Wakefield Kirkgate
Lakenheath - Shippea Hill
Melton Mowbray - Syston
Peartree - Willington

Is there any that i have missed off this list?

Stratford and Bethnal Green? (No platforms on the GEML tracks at Bethnal Green.)

There is actually one train a day between these stations in the Northbound direction but no trains between these stations in the Southbound direction.
Exactly. So between Tamworth and Polesworth there's no direct services, but between Polesworth and Tamworth there is. So it still fits the vague brief you gave!

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
A couple of classic ones are Lockerbie - Carstairs, and Chesterfield or Dronfield - Dore & Totley.

Also Castleford - Sherburn in Elmet in Yorkshire.

Regarding the Birmingham New Street - Small Heath, Small Heath is technically on the Great Western Railway metals, with Birmingham NS being part of both Midland Railway and London & North Western Railway metals.

Another planet...
Brighouse and Deighton.

Even when the "Grand Tour" ran (are there still a handful on Saturdays?) a Brighouse to Deighton journey would take you round the Bradley curve, straight through Deighton to Huddersfield where you'd sit for 10+minutes before heading back out to Deighton bound for Wakefield!

Sanderstead to South Croydon is very limited, as is Tottenham Hale - Clapton. I think Ely-Kennett may well be one? If we're allowed to use cheeky spurs and junctions then I've always liked the idea you can go from Stratford or Clapton to South Tottenham without passing through a station. So both of them count, as does Seven Sisters - South Tottenham. Also Forest Gate - Wansted Park, I think all c2c services go straight through don't they? I guess it's a bit cheeky using some of those which aren't on the same line haha, but you take what you can haha

Brixton - Denmark Hill
also Brixton- Elephant & Castle

Reason... there are no platforms at Brixton on the Catford Loop Line

Lee and Grove Park
Wigan NW and Patricroft
Ashburys and Manchester Victoria

Frome and Pewsey
Bruton and Pewsey
Pewsey and Trowbridge

If you allow Brixton and Denmark Hill then why not:
Stone and Rugeley TV
if not then:
Barlaston and Rugeley TV
and if still not:
Stoke and Rugeley TV.

The complete list is, I suspect, very lengthy.

As almost always with these trivial questions a few definitions would do no harm. I have adopted the following definitions (probably incomplete):

1. Two stations are next to each other if it is possible to travel from one to the other (in either direction) without passing through another station.
2. Passing through another station occurs if either a platform road or a line, without a platform on a very similar (further definition required) alignment is used.
3. A route using an avoiding line (e.g. Westbury avoiding line) or a distinct alternative alignment (e.g. Crewe Independent Lines) not meeting the criteria of definition 2 (above) enables the intermediate station to be ignored for the purposes of defining whether other stations are next to each other.
4. No reversal of direction of travel permitted between departure from one station and arrival at the next.

Frankly I don't see why anyone other that the Opening Poster should have to set out definitions.

I hope that whoever asked the question has a MODEL ANSWER otherwise this will be a leading contender for the worst thought out trivial question of recent times (and the competition is strong).

Anyway have fun.:)

And technically, all of those companies have been defunct for the past 68 years (or more) so it doesn't matter any more!

I would hardly put those as 'next to each other', what with having Westbury between, but I do see your point (routing via the avoiding lines).

Historically, Bedwyn and Pewsey fit the criteria (and still do to all practical purposes, with one 'up' and two 'down' trains per day, the latter only 12 minutes apart!).
