Just a simple question how many remaining turntables are there on the Network Rail network and where are they?

I think there are still turntables at Hither Green, Leeds Neville Hill and St Blazey.

I'm pretty sure I had a thread on this a few years a go if you care to look for it.

There are four that I can think of in Scotland.

Fort William has one, and is utilised by the locomotives that work the Jacobite.

I know there is one in Aberdeen, and is in the process of being refurbished.

There was one in Perth. However, I think it was dismantled by accident a few years ago.

The Strathspey Railway have one, but I'm not sure that can be classed as on the network.

The ones I know in my neck of the woods are Neville Hill depot (Leeds) and York( next to the slow lines near the old York works & the freightliner wagon repair shed.

Is the one at Darlington still there? Or is it severed from the network?

Was there the last time I went passed on a train. Not sure its rail connected anymore and it a bit small in table length so not very useful these days. It would also need a lot of money spending to it to get it back into use.

Where's the turntable at Scarborough?

Sent from my SM-T560 using Tapatalk

Its very close to the old excursion platform at Scarborough and was fitted into one of the old turntable pits from the former Scarborough MPD. It was also converted by extending the top by approx 4m longer as it turns above the existing hole in which it is fitted so as to accept larger engines than it was designed for.It was also modified to be driven by a smaller hydraulic turning motor powered from a small diesel driven pump. It then makes it a one man operation.

I believe Scarborough Council made a financial contribution into its installation as it had been suggested that it was removed and installed at York next to the ROC.

The one installed at York came from elsewhere to replace the triangle that was used to turn engines caused by the building of the ROC as this removed the triangle railway layout.

Is this it on Google earth?

If you look to the left of the turntable in the picture you can see the water storage tank near to the road used for filling steam engines whilst down at the turntable.

Still there, fenced off and severed from Park Lane Sidings. It was mooted to be Weardale-bound a long while ago but nothing came of it

No, it stayed there disconnected, but I'm sure that it's physically gone now (unless it's just overgrown and concealed by weeds). There's been a track maintenance train obscuring the view almost permanently for the last few months.

Potentially any depot that used to service the Royal Mail TPOs would have at least had one, probably some will have had their turntables removed since the end of the TPO trains

Carnforth has one - within the WCRC/Steamtown facilities, but accessible from the national network.

Bounds Green I believe - The puffer buffer wailing and gnashing of teeth when the engineers triangle was removed was embarrassing.

Presumably for the mail bag exchange apparatus to be on the correct side/direction?

I know its going back a while but i always thought the bag catcher/retriever vehiclels could do it from both sides.

I remember posting letters in the side of the TPO at Penzance back in the 70s after the last post had gone !

Happy days.

Ferme Park, actually. It was installed there in the mid-70's - it originated from Cleethorpes.

The only other table in the KX Division at that time was the small table at Hitchin, which went out of use in 1977/8 and was removed for preservation, initially at Quainton Road. The last items to be turned there were the tender ploughs, prior to being hauled away to Doncaster.

There is a list of SOME of the turntables in both the UK and US within the wikipedia article:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_turntable

There are questions associated with some of the information and clearly not all are connected to the UK Rail Network. Nonetheless a worthwhile list.

I hope that the mods will forgive me for not repeating the list here, there are too many links and too much formatting to make that sensible.

I found a few of the locations very interesting, including the new t/t at Hitachi Newton Aycliffe, Swindon (listed structure) and Derby ('under the floor').

The exchange apparatus was on one side of the vehicle only, but normally two were marshalled together in the rake, one the opposite way round to the other, to handle travel in both directions. Only one vehicle in the train did the exchange but multiple vehicles were needed for sorting and stowage.

The offset side corridors were a GWR feature from the earliest days of corridor trains (they aligned with the side corridors in the carriages) but most BR vehicles had centre connections as normal (a few had offset corridors to match ex-GW vehicles before they were withdrawn).

Having to use a turntable for postal vehicles would be a rare event, it was more easily achieved by using a convenient triangle or loop. Stock at Paddington was traditionally run round the West Ealing-Greenford loop to get turned.

Thanks Taunton. From my early 1960s days at Penzance i can never remember the TPO stock going to Long Rock for turning. By then the retrieval apparatus had long gone.

The TPO sorting coaches had the sorting frames down one side and on the other all the hooks where the mail sacks were hung

Forgive me for going slightly off topic but are there any surviving traversers?
