Bridge Bash with a Difference

The bridge across the Mawddach Estuary at Barmouth has been struck by a YACHT. Closure can be expected until at least 1000 tomorrow as it will cannot be inspected until daylight. Road transport will be in place between Barmouth and Tywyn via a circuitous route via Fairbourne and expected to increase journey time by approx 60 mins. . Shuttle buses will run between Barmouth and Tywyn and some extended to Pwllheli if required. An RNLI lifeboat is in attendance and the incident was reported to Network Rail by the Coastguard.

Further details. The yacht involved was a 25ft Fisher type craft which broke away from it's moorings in strong winds and high tides. The 1000 earliest estimate for re-opening has been updated to "until further notice". Any inspection, after daylight, will depend also on tidal levels and a Marine diver to go down and inspect.

This has happened in London with various vessels on the Thames from time to time. I've never known it to recently happen at night, though. Good luck to all dealing with this one!

The Severn Railway Bridge was a crossing across the River Severn between Sharpness and Lydney, Gloucestershire. It was badly damaged by river barges in 1960 and demolished in 1970.

We get that fairly regularly in Norfolk with rented pleasure cruisers. One bloke managed to get his rented cruiser well and truly wedged under one of the river bridges between Norwich and Whitlingham.

Or someone else who managed to (IIRC) partially capsize a fairly large and presumably expensive cruiser after getting confused by Somerleyton Swing Bridge.

I can understand that, was in Wroxham a few years ago when somebody had just rented one of those boats, and within 5 minutes derailed the roof by taking it - much to his embarrassment no doubt, under the rather low bridge in the town. Right in front of one of the broads tour boats.

One of the lowest on the Broads. A lot of boats have to wait until near low tide to get under it or not all for some at Spring tides. Never managed it the week I was there as the tide times did not work out (near Spring tides) and it would have meant using up two days to get under and back.

Not as many times as it used to as most proper sea going ships only go to Howdendyke now and nothing much goes beyond there except pleasure boats.

It might be the largest swing span bridge for rail in this country now.

The bridge still has a signal box manned 24hrs / 7 days a week and ships have priority over rail.
