Hi all,

Quick query here.

I'm thinking of getting the 8:49 Saturday Leeds - Armathwaite train which gets into Armathwaite at 11:23.

I know there's an onward bus from there to Carlisle - does anyone know how long this bus connection takes to get to Carlisle ? In particular, has it been connecting with the 11:56 Carlisle to Lancaster ?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have no personal experience of this service but I would be very surprised I you made that connection in Carlisle.

That's a shame. Looks as though I won't be able to make the loco hauled. The Saturday diagram on the Cumbrian Coast isn't very good.

Booked arrival at CAR is 12:03. I wouldn't rely on a bus doing 10 miles in 20 minutes max which is what you'd need for the connection, given the roads concerned.

I assume you have a Northern voucher so are not able to get to Carlisle via Lancaster?

The only other option is the 0619 from Leeds which will get there with a couple of hours time to spare.

Is it not possible to do it the other way?

I'll probably end up doing the other way via Barrow.

Shame, that weekday morning departure from Preston would have been ideal !

To be fair, the disappearance of TPE from the Carnforth - Barrow section has made things easier from that end.

I fairly recently did Wakefield-Leeds-Preston-Carlisle-(Appleby by bus)-Leeds-Wakefield. I think I left Preston at 1018 on a loco hauled train up the Cumbrian Coast. I picked a really nice day too.

So you would be getting onto the 1133 bus from Armathwaite to Carlisle due in at 1203. I have been on the S&C RRB recently and with 1. very light traffic in Carlisle and not getting stuck behind a tractor (which often happens) in the country bit and 2. being on one of the more newer and nippy mini bus type rail replacement buses (rather then a big coach) then you MIGHT arrive at Carlisle after about 20 minutes. However, this is highly unlikely and I would certainly not bank on it.

I think your other plan to go the other way is more doable - moreover as you are wanting to go the local hulled service on the coast.
