Just getting back to the discussion about loadings and why tour operators prefer to start from the Midlands or North West a lot (ties in with Tom's post above).

Having just looked at Spitfire's website, I note that there is still seats available in all classes for next Saturdays tour starting in the South. Meanwhile, the Celtic Growler which has just been announced (starting from Preston) already has a re-run planned for June.

It's outrageous the tour operators start the majority of their tours from areas knowing they are likely to sell out, isn't it Tom?

Railtour promoters aren't charities. If tours don't fill they don't run, and the chances of them doing the same again are slim, especially when you take into consideration more lucrative, money-spinning markets like NW England (I'd rather run two tours from there and make a profit rather than run x amount of tours from London to match or better the profit margins made elsewhere), and consider the current financial and economic climate.

Outrageous in the sense Alex would like me to start up my own Touring company if I am not happy with the rest.

Doubt its a rerun of the Celtic Growler tour just announced, think it may be another destination.

Yet the Buffer Puffer 4 had 4.1. Whilst Buffer Puffer 6 had 6.1. Lets not stop there, There were two Swansongs. Also, why compare a tour from Poole from tours in London? Poole is hardly near London!

I'm sure I made a point about this before, Buffer Suffers are LOAD 6! Take out a stewards coach and thats 1 FC + 4 STD. Meanwhile a mainline tour that goes somewhere other than 1o circles of the capital can load to 12 or 13 hence why the BP tours sell out! Plus by running two 6 coach trains compared to one 12 coach train the same people may well travel on both.

Fair enough, I stand to be corrected on that.

And how many carriages were on each Buffer Puffer and Swansong?

Also note the difference in tours. The BP and Swansongs were aimed at the cranks and trackbashers. The Chistmas Cracker is aimed at the day-out market. (Easy to get to from London as well seeing it picks up at Basingstoke and Didcot.)

In reply to 33011, I like the look of both tours but I have a feeling I won't be able to do either of them. All going to depend on what happens in the spring for me.

It certainly is and it's going to be a difficult choice!

Chingfinder are going to Penzance with a pair of /4s and Spitfire are going to somewhere much further North with a pair of DRS.

Decisions decisions...:-?:-?

I had heard a few rumours about that tour, and as Penzance is dud with 405 single may be the Spitfire for me ;)

Well then, shut up and stop moaning. We're all fed up of you boring the pants off us about the lack of London tours.

Sadly with the opposition, I agree with class313; the last London one was September; and I was on it!.

Ok fair enough, the last one was September. Before I wade in, and I don't want to believe me. Can someone tell me how many tours have been available to board from Darlington, or even Durham this year, and I mean ones that actually stop there, because theres plenty that fly past. I am guessing not many.

Hello and welcome to the forum Mr. Spitfire!

I'll bet it cost a mega-fortune to set up Spitfire Railtours in the first place, but also well worth it. Always fancied organising a tour myself, but there's that lottery win needed still...

Query, actually! The Celtic Growler bit says the Fife Circle bit is £15 in advance, but can this be booked after booking the main tour? Just when I get around to booking, I can't guarentee being able to do the Fife Circle part, although very clearly this would be desirable. Once my plans for the spring are a little more sorted out, I could then book the Fife Circle bit afterwards.

Hopefully that makes sense...

No lottery wins required, honest...

With regards to the Celtic Growler, yes you can book advance fare of £45 (4weeks prior) and then the add on £5 to do the mini tour (as long as you book/upgrade prior to the day of travel).
The £15 in advance is for people in Scotland, just interested in doing the Fife Circle Mini Tour.

So book ahead for the best fares 8-)

Ah, that's cleared a lot up for me. Mucho thanks. Expect a booking from me for either The Celtic Growler or the one with the 20s (I forget the name without looking it up). Probably the former, I like 37s much more than 20s!

No lottery win needed? I reckon I'd need a EuroMillions win to live out my dream railtour properly!:o

Dear O me... no rateable tours in London???

Check out www.uksteam.info

Thats where you will find them

Thats where you find the decent tours 8-)

Though being hauled by a 20,31,33,37,58,59,60,66,67,90 & 92 is good too especially 20 33 & 37 though they dont beat steam. It would be good to get a diesel Railtour round kent again either with 20's 33's or 37's:D

You might find 37113 is another family member!

I do agree a tour to Kent would be nice, quite fancy a Deltic to Ramsgate when there's one back in main line service - it's even a traditional Deltic destination! ;)

:D

I'd like to see D9000 obliterate Birmingham on it's way to Ramsgate, that would be a sight :)<D

I like the way you think Sir! What a brilliant idea! :D Just need to persuade Spitfire to do that. It will be a really popular one, considering it is an ex Deltic destination.

And just up the road from me :)
