I saw it on Dawlish webcam. It was down as an express DMU on RTT.

Which train was it shown as "Express DMU". I can't find one on RTT. Trains are not retimed for one class of unit substituting for another ad hoc.

2Z22 but it now doesn`t mention that it was class 158 or express. Definately that train though.

Just saw it heading towards Teignmouth. Oh to have finished work an hour earlier. My bottom wouldn't be suffering from Pacer Induced Numbness Disorder :p

It's funny when certain unit classes seem to 'escape', also not forgetting recently when 143s have made it to Penzance, Westbury and Weston Super Mare in passenger service!

A 158 trailing 2 x 143 is not a good image!
Beside, that combination would have been too long for Exeter St Thomas so most of the train would have had to be locked out of use, which would defeat the object of the school-kid special.

RPI quoted that it did not work the school kids train but one has worked it in the past on several occasions. Is it that St Thomas can take 3x20m units but not 2x20+1x23 ?.

You are nearly right, St Thomas is 102m on the down (http://www.networkrail.co.uk/browse documents/sectional appendix/western sectional appendix.pdf page 266) so 2x143+158 at 106m is too long, 2x143+150 (the normal formation) is right on the limit at 100m especially with a signal on the end.

When a 158 has worked it it was formed 153+143+158 at 99m, quite an unusual formation, and yes it was seen with my mark 1 eyeball!

Due amended Bank Holiday/Engineering working 1588882, the SWT hired in unit, worked the School kids diagram today but without the school kids trip itself (on holiday). Also 158763 on 2C67 0800 Cardiff Cen to Paignton.

158961 was reportedly involved in an incident last night. Info from south west railways and heritage group in facebook

Putting 2+2 together here, but GWR Journey Check last night reported 2123 Portsmouth Hbr to Westbury cancelled due fatality.

Have since learnt that Exeter and Reading Depots are the only GWR locations with full facilities to clean unite following fatality, hence the reason for going to Exeter. Assuming this info is correct.
Another assumption is that it ran as a VSTP (nothing on RTT) from Fratton to Westbury and 150244 in opposite direction and which covered 0859 Brighton to Great Malvern. 158956 was working a 2 Car Diagram today but obviously not in the right place at the right time to avoid use of 150244 on a 158/9 diagram.
