yesterday evening i traveled from Manechester to Birmingham on the 19:07 XC service. All was well until Wolverhampton where we were delayed for a few minutes before setting off on a route i am sure was not booked as i think we went past Bescot yard & Soho Depot.

Can anyone explain the route taken and why that route was used?

thanks

It's a well known diversionary route into BHM. As the train was terminating in BHM?, it could have been done to reverse the stock formation.

Also there had been signalling problems heading out of Wolves heading towards Birmingham yesterday requiring diversions via Bescot and Soho so could be related to that. Could be a booked route retention move, couldn't say without checking, but wouldn't be related to reversing the stock though as going that way would leave it pointing in the same direction.

This isn't a frequent event and was either a diversion or a booked working for route knowledge. Your train would have headed via Willenhall and gone through Bescot and Tame Bridge. After passing through Hamstead station, there's a triangle junction and you could have either gone south via Soho TMD and arrived at New Street from the West, or continued via Perry Barr Station and gone through Aston and arrived from the East. The railway forms a ring around North Birmingham with both ends going into New Street.

Most southbound Crosscountry trains were diverted via Bescot on Monday due to axle counter failures at Wolverhampton: Some (mainly the Manchester - Bournemouth trains) were diverted to avoid Wolverhampton altogether, running direct from Bushbury Junction (North West of Wolverhampton station) to Portobello Junction to gain the diversionary route via Bescot.

The standard route taken (by those trains that called at Wolverhampton) was Wolverhampton - Bescot Stadium - Hamstead - Soho - Birmingham New Street.
