Unfortunately I need to travel back home (after a trip for work purposes) on the day of a reported strike. I will be travelling from Brighton to London. I am pretty flexible in times. What would happen if the route is down, how would I get home :s. Do the operators arrange coaches? Sorry for the novice questions, I am just a bit concerned :s :s

Can you research coach services? You may get a more comfortable journey, and if it's a cheap ticket you can book you could have it as a backup. Of course I personally much prefer a train to a coach, but at least you'd get a seat.

There will be plenty of trains, but when I did this journey recently it was a lottery how many coaches were on each train, e.g. just 4 cars on a train after a long gap, while others were 8 or 12 car. If you are prepared to wait for a decent length train and board at the front, you will get a seat.

Also a lot of people avoid travelling during the strike, but the Brighton to London route isn't particularly affected, so you will probably find it less busy than normal .

They don't give hassle to users of Thameslink Only tickets during strike days either.

Many thanks. ;) I look forward to my train journey which will be a lot more interesting then my work related matters unfortunately!

I've had a look. If worse comes to worse, I'll take a coach, but the above advice is encouraging. I also do tend to get a little coach sick and I haven't been feeling well for a week so not really too keen on that.

I just wanted to say I had a pleasant trip. Going back from Brighton to Victoria, I was surprised to see the Southern service was cheaper than the Thameslink service to West Hampstead, so I saved myself an hour or so too!

The though fare is the same price for any of the company's routes (via Victoria on their Southern branded trains or their slower Gatwick Express branded trains , changing onto the Victoria & Northern lines or alternatively via their Thameslink route). So you can travel either way.

Glad you had a good journey.

Do Thameslink ever run any 12-car trains at the weekend? I went to Brighton on a recent sunny Sunday and the 8-car train was wedged on the way down, full and standing on the way back.

I don't think GTR run any (or many) 12cars on their Thameslink route at weekends but I will mention this to someone who will know for sure...
