I'm probably going to annoy quite a few people and get a fair bit of criticism from posting this thread, but I thought I'd post something that I came up with about a month ago or so. There's also a couple of amendments to what I originally came up with.

This is an idea for the First (and a few other bits) network in West of England.

Clearly you don't have an appreciation of how much traffic the X39 picks up on the Upper Bristol and Newbridge Roads. It will never be rerouted to the Lower Bristol Road, even partially. It can't compete with Oldfield Park Station so what's the point?

However, it may be rerouted via Western Riverside and the new Destructor Bridge in the future however for me that would be dependent on the sainsbury's redevelopment as I can't see the benefit of sending it via Pinesway and the Midland Bridge

Well I do appreciate how much traffic is on the Newbridge and Upper Bristol Road - most of it goes from Bath centre to Newbridge. That is served by U5, my services X, 20, 36 and 38.

Just had a relook - it would be better to have 90 renumbered as 7 and then my 51 & 73 merger as 11.

I will keep this relatively brief - note the next bit is not directed specifically at you....

The idea that a load of renumbering to satisfy either the anally retentive, or so those who seek solace in neat orderly patterns (i.e. people with actual conditions like OCD, Aspergers or Autism) is ludicrous. For the vast majority of people, they catch one or two services. The fact that it has that number that is established and familiar is convenient and simple and that is what is important, not some pursuit of some form of "order" that will always be imperfect anyway. Merely renumbering a service doesn't do a single thing apart from confuse people (and yes, I don't agree with Bath's 10/13/14 becoming 1/3/4 for the sake of it).

Now for the specific responses to the actual service suggestions. Vicbury is correct about the X39. There's quite a substantial trade from the UBR to Bristol whereas LBR is served by Oldfield Park station and has fewer chimney pots especially in the western stretch. Sending every other one along the LBR would be retrograde

I'm surprised at your suggestion for some Stockwood to Keynsham service but as I said to FTV33 (albeit he was saying every 20 mins), look at the practicalities. First of all, are you really going to route a regular route via Stockwood Hill? I suggest anyone who does propose that actually gets in a car and then drives that route. It is a pain in the ar5e in a car let alone a bus even twice an hour. Unless we're thinking of going into Queen Charlton as well? Also, why? The 637 was an absolute pup and took no-one so where's the demand for a new service? If the idea is that it'll provide an alternative to the 349/38 to Bristol, it won't. People don't take the 77 from Thornbury when the 78/79 are faster. Not everyone wants to maximise their time on a bus!

As for Chew Valley - those ideas are nothing more that a pipe dream. They'll never happen - there isn't the trade. That's why the daily service on the 752 was withdrawn. It's why the main service was massively cut back (effectively halved). Sorry

Dont be sorry and i know were mostly going over the same ground again, but i thought id givr it a go.

I still think I'm right and the only reason why I've renumbered so much is because First are deciding to re number every thing anyway - my idea would be to re number it and then leave it as it is. It is a great pain renumbering services to passengers, but if you completely redo the network, it'll work.

I know what everyone think of Chew Valley, but it will pick up some demand - give them the opportunities and they'll use it. My ideas compete with A4 and A1 and serve the local area surrounding the airport - where most people will want to commute from.

What's the point of there being a 23 & 25 which run via the exact same route as the Centre-Southmead Hospital and Ashton Vale-Centre routings of the 24? You may as well just have the 24 running every 10 minutes instead. That would be simpler.

Why would BoS routes renumber ?
You seem to have omitted BoS 55 ?

I haven't renumbered them - just simply made them the original numbers. I have renumbered 29 - but that's because it wouldn't be run by BoS.

Oh no I missed out 55 - how silly of me. Is there need for 55? From what I've seen answer is no.

It being split in the centre saves if running late. I would've done the same to 75/6, but that's not worth playing with as much. Just a basic idea that one, so fair enough.

Please note I took only hour and a half to come up with that list. I spent a bit longer on the amendments - actually worked out 175 idea took a while.

If you completely redo the network, then vague renumberings for the sake of it are the last thing you need.

As for the "build it and they will come" view of new services, that's a view that I've seen so many times on forums, not just this one. Usually it's a case of "people will use them" or "it might generate new trade".

Put bluntly - it's usually rubbish and the rural bus challenge funding illustrated that. The 754 ran 6 days a week, the 672-4 ran two hourly (I think) - neither generated the sort of patronage to sustain them and a few dozen new houses in the Chew Valley is really nothing.

The funny thing is, is that the 8 and 9 have been split. The 8 now runs to Clifton every 10 minutes and the 9 to Redland every 30 minutes.

Would be nice to see an X65 Bristol to Sailsbury with the thing extending to the latter on a Sunday.

It's not a question of 'annoying' people, it's probably more a question of 'why are you bothering' ?. I appreciate that you may well be autistic but, to me, there really is little point in posting what are just more of your fantasies.

Thank you for your kind comment. I'll include that if I email First with my suggested 175 idea, which will very much improve the network and create new links to go from Shepton to Bristol and provide sufficient links for people of Norton Radstock to transfer onto 376 to get to Bristol.

I fully appreciate that I don't have the full knowledge of the Bristol and Bath networks, so some of the stuff which I have come up with there may be not the best solutions. I came up with the idea of having the Bath town network running under letters quite a while ago and it copies what Stagecoach have done in Exeter and Cheltenham. After watching First change the North Somerset services time and time again, I thought I'd come up with an idea which is more sensible and permanent. Then the Bath-Norton corridor, the buses in Wells and the bus services available in the Chew Valley area i have been watching for some time. I grew up on outskirts of Chew and went to school there and I know how very difficult as a kid it is to get to the local towns and even trying to go on night's out with my mate's is a complete nightmare. I do truly hate this whole idea that serving Chew is a bad idea. I know damn well it is not a popular place, nor a particularly poor area, but there will be demand if advertised and people are informed enough about it.

I particularly hate the whole idea of renumbering because, as Wazoo and so many people ha w pointed out, including myself, it confuses matters and annoys people. But this is First bus and they have decided to change all the numbers around in the last few years. Having had loads of numbers in the 3** range, most of which were grouped fairly closely together for common sense purposes, they have decided to change all these, confuse most passengers, annoy drivers and enthusiasts and basically mess up the entire network. Instead of leaving things as they are, keeping the loyal passengers they had, they messed it up, all to make it a bit more tidier. Look at the Bath network changes - why re number it like that. If you really think enthusiasts on here have some sort of problem with trying to re number everything in the network, then just look at what First have done. Im simply suggesting ideas that will make things easier to remember - for example - most services going to Cribbs will be 1-6, then Hengrove is 7-14. It helps passengers, whether or not you like it - look at how First renumbered 40/41 just so it could be grouped as 1-4 going along Whiteladies Road. First are causing the issues, Im just trying to think of suggestions to make them more appealing to the public.

I agree that some of the services in my list aren't good ideas, but something which First has failed to realise is not creating new links and cutting most of the existing ones doesn't improve your reputation. It doesn't help trying to tidy things up so that WoE only operate services in Bath, Bristol, Weston and Wells. Creating new links ensures that there are more opportunities to use a First day ticket and that then means more people use their buses.

Also why am I bothering - because I want to see people using public transport more, creating new opportunities for people to travel without a car and trying to tell First what will help them improve their network.

Have you been regularly advising First of your ideas ?

Well usually posting them on the forum in hope that someone says its a good idea and then I'll suggest it.

I do think I might suggest the 125, 175, 176, 181 and 182 ideas to First though regardless of people's opinions.

Perhaps you'll let us all know their reaction.

There is a bus from Trowbridge to Salisbury.

Indeed there is a service, but I thought the original post was about Sunday services from Salisbury? Currently they only run Bath to Warminster and return.

Indeed, that was my point. The Mon to Sat service is fairly marginal - it was deregistered by First/Go Ahead and worked under tender for a few years by Go Ahead and later Hatts before First took a commercial punt. The Sunday service is tendered between Trowbridge and Warminster and may disappear with proposed council cuts. Apart from a Sunday feeder journey in the 1990s for services from Salisbury to Weymouth, it's not had a Sunday service for donkeys.

As for extending to Bristol, the X4 (as was) did so but was cut back over 20 years as it was massively unreliable because of Bristol's traffic and the need to traverse Bath.

the 1 thing that a sunday 265 x4 or simalar would be able to offer is better sunday morning joruneys between bath and salisbury. the currant railway timetable is patheitc and hasnt changed for years. it starts too late and cmpletely misses the demand for travel before midday on a sunday.

Perhaps that is indicative of demand??

However, as I said, the bus service east of Warminster is pretty marginal anyway. It was tendered for a period and W&D couldn't make it work. I suspect it washes its face but that's about it.

I somehow doubt it could be run commercially on a Sunday and given that Wiltshire Council (traditionally very pro public transport) are looking at cutting a lot of their budget, I can safely say that it won't happen. After all, go to TrowVegas or Westbury on a Sunday - hardly kicking!!

try getting the a train at torwbridge or bradford on a sunday at 10 or 11 on a Sunday (1st journeys heading to bath and bristol). even without special events like rugby or xmas market they are rammed.

I quite agree, that's if the train is not caped, which happens far too frequently.

The first train from Yeovil going north is at 1504 so the only way to travel is via Salisbury. The first train being the 1025 from Salisbury to Bristol which is always full and standing. The next is 2 hours later and this is the one that is frequently caped leaving a 3 hour gap after the first train.

Also notable is the Great Western Railway timetable booklets now do not mention the work "First" anywhere in them. Another part of the First empire hiding a tainted brand.

Think you answered your own point. People in Trowbridge and Bradford head for Bath! My better half lived in Westbury and still has a good few friends who do - they look to head to Bath for shopping and nights out never Salisbury. Then you have the attractions of Christmas markets and Bath rugby - Salisbury doesn't have those.

If you go back 20 years or so, the general pattern of services were Trowbridge to Bath (3 buses per hour - probably overkill) and Salisbury (every two hours) so headways have converged. However, it shows the relative pull of each city.

Certainly, I can't see First running a Sunday service commercially, and there's precious little in the council coffers. In fact, we should find out in the next few weeks quite how bad the cuts are likely to be. I'd not be surprised if we see the Trowbridge to Warminster service disappear then, given the rail service as an alternative.

Yes but a) why extend to Bristol and b) how much trade is there on a Sunday? Especially with it being twice as quick via train.

Taking in consideration of the villages which don't have a railway station between Sailsbury and Bath, surely there's got to be some demand of a couple of journeys per Sunday. The idea of extending it to Bristol would allow those villages direct access to a city for shopping.

I have to be careful what I say next as I know of a lass who lives there, it has to be said but Westbury on a Saturday is nearly as dead as Gainsborough on the same day. Went to Trow on the same day and the place was brimming with life.
