Hi folks

I'm travelling to an office just around the corner from London Bridge station tomorrow and intend to drive from my home near Birmingham to somewhere close to London and then take the train for the remainder of the journey.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where the best place to ditch the car might be?

My first thoughts are High Wycombe or Watford but I'm biased as these are obvious points in my usual train journey from Bham to Euston/Marylebone!

My main priority is not having to drive in central London, and I'll be aiming to arrive around 11am.

Many thanks in advance!

Oxford Parkway?

Haddenham & Thame Parkway?

Then train to Marylebone, walk along to Baker Street (5 mins), then Jubilee to London Bridge (11 mins).

Wembley Stadium underground station - reasonably priced car park, fast Metropolitan line into the centre

Brent Cross (the shopping centre) has plenty of free parking and is reasonably convenient for the eponymous Northern Line station.

A bit further out is Mill Hill Broadway, for Thameslink services direct to London Bridge.

Luton Airport Parkway? Direct train to Blackfriars then a 10-15 minute walk from there?

Hillingdon and Perivale on both just off the A40. The M40 will become the A40 a few miles before these stations.

Or High Wycombe, Haddenham or even Oxford Parkway (about 10 mins from the M40)

Beaconsfield station is a mile or so from the M40 and has a large multi storey car park, you can park and ride into Marylebone from there. It's probably a better option than High Wycombe for park and ride due to its proximity to the motorway.

Met doesn't go from Stadium, it goes from Park. I'm not sure which station you're thinking off, as I don't recall Wembley Park having a good car park, though it does have a superior service. The service from stadium is fast enough, just not very frequent.

Hillingdon is definitely easier from Birmingham. Decent car park and right off the A40, which is really at that point just the suburban part of the M40. I always direct people that way and it works well. Frequent Met service into Baker Street, quicker still if lucky enough to be able to switch to a Chiltern at Harrow.

There's a huge multi storey between the two stations. It's closer to Stadium but it's only a ten minute walk from Park.

There's no direct Thameslink services from the North side of Thameslink to London Bridge until 2018. As someone else suggested - going to Blackfriars and walking along the South Bank is an option, particularly if the weather is decent.

Of all the above, Stanmore is the most direct as one train takes you to London Bridge, the cheapest as a Zone 5 to Zone 1 ticket using contactless will max out at £11'ish if you avoid peak hours, and the service is about every five minutes between the peaks.
Getting to the station is easy, - leave M1 at J4, then right at the first roundabout, straight across the next and less than 1/2 mile further the entrance to the car park is on the left. A total of less than two miles from Junction 4. Car park costs about £5 after 10:00hrs, train will take around 41 mins.

Where will you be taking the car to after you have visited London Bridge? That would determine where the best place to park is

Are not the shopping car parks time-limited?

A fine idea, but the second half of my day rules this out :)

What are you doing in the second half of the day? It helps to answer the question.

The multi-storey is part of the outlet shopping mall, and costs £10-£24 if you stay more than six hours.

I'd say the OP should want to park within the London zones if they can, as trains in from Beaconsfield, etc, are not cheap. In which case, Stanmore is probably the best bet.

The reception to the Shard? You'll probably get in the papers too.

I'm now answering in the past tense but will do so in case this helps somebody else in future.

I didn't know where I would be later in the day, but I knew it wouldn't be near civilisation or railway stations hence needing the car.

I went with the Stanmore recommendation in the end so thank you for your help, fantastic as it always is :)

Depends which way you're coming - if you're using the M1 then two suggestions:

Harlington is 5 mins from Jnc 12 on the M1 - Thameslink every 15 mins into central London - also has off-peak parking rate.

Luton Airport Parkway has been mentioned elsewhere - and would be my other suggestion, though beware - there are roadworks between Jnc 12 and 11 on the M1.

Don't know the Chiltern line as well - but if you came down the M40, possibly Denham? But it's been many, many years since I tried that route myself, so can't comment on what it's like now for parking etc.
