Hi all a friend ooop north is interested in the role in the title?

There doesn't seem to be a requirement for distance from depot so I wondered if any current conductors could advise on roster patterns and Earliest and latest finish as she will be commuting mostly by rail.

She is aware of our current struggle down south but still fancies the job.

Any advice appriecaited

Commute is 45 mins ? As far as I'm aware that is non negotiable and still in force , but I stand corrected if it's changed

I don't know anything specific, but what if they were working the last or first train of the day?

They won't even consider you if you don't have your own transport due to the fact that working on the first/last services of the day is common.

Job advertises as 60min commute from base station, I currently live near Bury and my application was accepted....... I've just completed the online assessments (numerical and literacy) for the trainee role at Picc

Just for your info,
Northern were advertising for Middlesbrough Conductors, Today people who were successful in getting through to testing have been told they are now in a talent pool as positions are on hold until next year and once they are allowed they will begin the tests.

Not sure if this applies to one depot or across the Northern network.

Thanks for that, I often see one of the Northern conductor managers (who also deals with recruitement) around Piccadilly, I've had a chat with him before but wouldn't actually go up to him personally to ask where the application stage is at, i'll see what i can find out on my next shift

I did the online assessments this morning. Maths I reached the required standard, bit of a surprise as I found it quite challenging. I also completed the Verbal Reasoning....not heard back from the result of this yet. Did anyone else find them both a challenge?

Based on current timetables earliest starts are around 4am latest finishes around 2.10am. New starters get both earliest starts and latest finishes due to link structure and rarely start after 6am on early shifts or finish before midnight on lates. You will not be able to get train in for most shifts as you will either start to early or finish too late.

You do not necessarily need a car to be considered however if you don't you will need to live within walking distance, be on the Wilmslow Rd 24 hour bus route or be prepared to cycle in all weather conditions.

I have done a test on the same system for a Network Rail position and found the Network Rail one much easier, i was also quite surprised to see i had passed the maths part, i found it to be very difficult after not having to use maths like that for many years! I felt more confident with the verbal reasoning test, but again the questions on that were more challenging than others i have done in the past....just waiting to hear back now :) good luck!

Absolutely it's been 18 years since I left school and haven't done any maths since, really struggled but got through. The verbal reasoning I found quite tricky...time will tell. Any ideas on what the next step is if we got through the verbal reasoning bit?

Providing we've been successful it should be an invitation to one of Northern Rail's assessment days, set up very much like knockout stages. You'll be taken through a bit of role play i think, ticket checking and selling exercises, the Group Bourdon & SCAAT tests. If you're unsuccessful at any point they take you aside and you're asked to leave. Good i suppose, it would be gutting to sit through the whole day only to find out you had failed the first part :) if all is successful you will then have a structured interview with the assessor and a manager, get through that and then i think there is one more interview with a conductor manager.

Hi, I have also applied for the role and I have passed both tests verbal and numerical.

Are you sure about the role playing SCAAT test etc..? or this is something you think will happen.
I have never done anything with them before so I haven't got a clue about what to expect? thanks

I know a few northern conductors at Piccadilly and a few people who have applied in the past, that's the general running of the day unless they've changed it

Have you had confirmation that you passed the verbal test? Soon as I completed the numerical test, I had an email saying congratulations. I'm still waiting to hear back on the verbal reasoning..

I've had no communication regarding the verbal, I'm hoping those successful have gone through to Northern who will then communicate once they've all been processed....the whole application process can be quite slow and if there aren't actual positions to fill it's possible (if successful) people will be put into a talent pool until a vacancy opens up. I'm back in work on Friday so will try find out as much as I can

There is no way to tell. Majority of people I have spoken with have had there application status changed to under consideration. Just a waiting game now

I think Northern have now got rid of SCAAT testing and the role play. From what I heard, the assessment now consists of a manager interview and a group exercise, unless things have changed again.

Hi,

The numeracy test is quite challenging. I passed but didn't finish the questions in September. I didn't get an e-mail confirming I'd passed the verbal reasoning but I had. It now goes to sift and I think they take the highest scores and put forward for next stage. Good luck

I would email Northern directly to find out the state of play with the verbal test. I like some of you guys here had immediate confirmation once I had passed the numerical test but nothing on the verbal. I emailed HR after leaving it a week and they confirmed I had passed and had gone to the manual sift. Good luck everyone.

Iv always been cautious when emailing about an application. I wouldn't want to come across as mythering them as it may jeopardise my application. As much as I'm wanting to find out how Iv done, I'm happy to wait for a response.

Hi, I have completed the online tests and been invited to the assessment day on Wednesday 19th October. Has anyone else been invited to the assessment day on the same, or different day?

Hi, need some advice. I've been looking out for a conductor role to come up for Leeds for some time and received an email notification last week whilst on holiday. I didn't want to miss out so applied just before the deadline. I haven't received any email notifications to complete the test but I logged onto their website today and spotted a message saying 'invite to numerical test' which i can click on to complete. Now I understand you only have 2 days to complete? Can anyone conform if this is still the case? Ideally I would like to do this once I return from holiday on Monday as the Internet isn't great and really need to practice (tests are not my strong point). The thing is I really don't want to miss this opportunity but without practice I feel I will fail miserably. Like I say I haven't received an email and Northern haven't sent me one (checked on their careers site) any advice would help, should I wait for an email or crack on with the test? Also is the numerical test difficult?

I guess Iv not made it then as Iv not heard anything. Saying that, if the assessment is this coming Wednesday I wouldn't be able to make it anyways as I'm at work. Shocking practise if they only give a couple of days notice. What are those people whom already have a job supposed to do? Surely you should be given some notice to make arrangements with work..

Train1992, can you confirm when you sat your assessments and for which depot please?

I think this could send people into a bit of a panic - I don't think this would this would be the one that closed last sunday. Looking at all the proof on here the recruitment is never THAT quick!

Have you checked your bulk mail?

If the message is on the careers page with your application then do the tests. As you have stated they give you 48 hours to do so.

You will have some practice question which you can run through as many times as you want.

I wouldn't personally pass up the opportunity

Hi Geordie-Bri, I sat the online verbal reasoning test on Thursday 13th October and was invited to the assessment day yesterday. I was also surprised at how quick their response was.

Yes this is for the Manchester Piccaddily vacancy which closed on Sunday. The assessment day is at the Macdonald hotel, Manchester.

Hi Geordie,

I believe isn't because is also confirming something on a Friday...inviting someone for an assessment day after few days...as I have said, I don't know but I think is may be a different application he's referring to
