Also what does it involve to send a second generation DMU or EMU to a preserved railway? Do heritage railway staff have to get trained on the units? Or do TOC staff have to get trained on the routes?

Are any other units that are due to visit any heritage railways in the near future? Personally i would like to see a 171 visit the Bluebell Railway and the Spa Valley Railway.

Several Class 159s and a Virgin XC class 220 have visited the Swanage Railway in the past.

Just to add, a 220 has also been on the Severn Valley I believe.

If you want to class an HST as a unit for the purpose of this thread, an HST has visited Swanage

Would the weekend service to Okehampton count? That must have bought a lot of units to the Dartmoor railway

159 006 is seen here in the bay at Swanage in June 2013; it visited as part of a pair, seen on arrival at Swanage in the other picture, but sorry I don't know the number of the other set.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Much appreciated. I have updated my list.

I suppose the Okehampton services do count but i wont include them as there are far too many too list. I imagine that almost every FGW 142 / 143 / 150 / 153 has been there at some point?

I dont think i would count HSTs as second generation DMUs. Arent they first generation locomotive hauled trains?

Does anyone know if there are any other 168s that have been to the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre? I am sure i remember a 168/2 going there but i cant remember the unit number(s)?

It would be good to see some more modern units visiting Heritage Railways in the future considering that so many of them now have connections to the National Rail network.

Another planet...
I have a vague and possibly erroneous memory of a 144 visiting the KWVR when they were fairly new... anyone able to confirm or deny that this took place?

Several modernish DMUs have visited the West Somerset Railway, one of them just last week.
It was a GWR unit, and AFAIK was driven by a GWR driver with a WSR driver conducting. Numerous return trips made between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard.
Similar arrangements have been made in the past.

An HST was stored on the WSR a few years ago, and ran in passenger service on the WSR during the diesel gala.

If it counts 950001 has also been as far as the exchange siding on the Ribble Steam Railway.

I don't think HSTs can be counted as first generation of anything as they were built after the introduction of TOPS and certainly weren't foreseen by the 1955 Modernisation Plan.

Not sure about that but a 141 went for the diesel gala in 1988. I think it was 55509+55529 but can't be 100% sure.

Rather strangely weren't some class 450's dragged to the watercress line for commissioning/training even though there was/is no 3rd rail? Or am I dreaming?

Yes indeed. They were locomotive hauled up and down the railway line. I already included 450 012 on my list. Im not sure if that was the only one or if any others visited as well?

Don't know if this counts but here's another Dean Forest one - XC 170 110 visited earlier this year to use our road loading bay after it was involved in some sort of incident on the mainline and was unable to travel back via rail. :)

Definitely counts! It had an incident with a cow, the train won! (Apart from needing to be skated back to the loops to access the DFR to go away by road but that's a minor point :) )
