Can anyone recommend any fantastically interesting trains or station in Moscow to visit?

I am going there this week.

Thanks

Same question for me. I'll be in Moscow for 3 days between the arrival of my train from Paris and the departure of my train to Tashkent. Interested to know about places with lots of traffic, good photo spots, etc.

I only used two stations in Moscow when i was there this summer . Leningradsky and Riga train station. RIGA train station is only a few platforms !

The metro is amazing there is no adverts at all on trains or in stations

I haven't been to Moscow since the late 1990s, but you're just in time to ride the newly reopened (and expanded) Moscow Central Circle line, a 50km heavy rail orbital route around the city.

(Eat your heart out London Overground :D )

Depending on when you arrive, you may also be able to ride it at no charge - it's free for the first month of operation. I think services started on or just after 10 September.

Ok, did not reply to the right post, sorry. To clarify, this is a picture of the new rail belt of Moscow.

I know it's a bit late, as your trip is already over.

But.. just incase anyone else reads this, to me the best city in Russia is St Petersburg. You 'can' do it in a daytrip. By 'can' I mean it's possible, but it doesn't do the city justice.
Take the Red Arrow night train, which is normally regarded as Russia's most prestigious (and it is absolutely sublime, trust me!), one way and then take the high speed Sapsan train the other way.
The Red Arrow truly is an experience, and if anyone's in that part of the world, you should check it out.
The Sapsan surprised me greatly when I took it, for a few reasons. Once you leave urban Moscow, there are just small villages dotted around. Not long after that there's nothing. And by nothing, I mean nothing but trees and lakes. It amazed me how sparsely populated that part of the world is. In about 2 and half hours, the train whizzes through just a few sleepy towns. Also, it's a really nice experience on board and not what I would cnsider to be 'Russian' service at all.

Also, another must do IMO is a metro tour. Moscow's metro is like nothing else on this planet. The stories behind the artwork can also be really gripping.

Yes I'm back and it's been great. Will certainly do that kind of trip again. Next one should be to go to the Caucasus countries with the Moscow-Baku train and come back via Turkey with the new Tbilissi-Kars railway for which new sleeping cars have been shown at the last Innotrans. Still have to wait à bit for that until the BTK railway opens and all the works around Ankara and Istanbul are completed.

And in thé mean time yes of course St Pet is in my to do list. At least 5 days on site...

Nice idea, but DO make it by then for sure you are-as a kapitalistiki westerner, allowed on that train. Untill recently these strange people were not allowed, as this train passes through some ''disputed areas''- thats for the MOW-Baky line.
From my last visits to what is now Rossye I only/mainly remember very much all-the-same anywhere dark green long sets of wagons, though I know and have seen the new RZD livery in various forms here and there.
Totally beside this are the ''elektrishka's.. or suburban electrics- like the German S-Bahn or just SWT/ST, but in a giant but very basic form-think of hard wooden seats as 3+3 wide. They serve also nearly any line out of Mockba.

Aware of that, but as far as I know this restriction on the Moscow-Baku train
has been lifted, as all regions traversed are now safe (or so they say)...
I might also try to travel out of Kiev instead of Moscow in order to put some
variation in the first part of the trip, I'll see what can be done. I know there
are trains from Kiev to south of Russia (Saratov, Astrakhan, ...). But in any
case, do you know where such information can be confirmed ? Consulate ?
Will they bother answering ?

Although my trip to Uzbekistan was in the same kind of carriages, but not
the dark green livery. Pictures of that trip (with captions in French, sorry for that) at http://www.ferrosteph.net/ferrosteph/vmvd/Ouzbekistan3/cms_756.htm

Ah yes, I've seen many of those. They have upgraded some of them for medium distance travel, like Moscow-Riazan. Same body, but better seating.
Pictures of that at http://www.ferrosteph.net/ferrosteph/vmvd/Moscou/cms_755.htm

OP - Five days is a good amount of time there. Try and give the Red Arrow a good too.

I took the Sapsan , a world away from older russian trains . Was not really High Speed either

It's maximum speed in operation in 250km/h (155mph), which is slower than only HS1 in the UK.
Plus, there are some other modern Russian trains that are similar. The Sapsan is by far the nicest though.

Lovely pictures BTW MarcVD. I would love to tour Central Asia, and those pictures brought it to life.

You all probably know this. But I didn't. When I was in Moscow there was a lot of snow (yes I know it's surprising). And I saw a snow train thing. Which was basically a longish yellow contraption which scooped snow up off the track at the front and then fed it by convayor belt to the back. Where, presumably??, it was fed into a truck which then dumps it somewhere. Does that sound right? I can't quite work out what happens to all of the snow on the conveyor belt. Unless it can extend and load up several trucks?? Anyone know?

I also saw lots of big lorries full of snow in Moscow being driven to an empty lot near to where I was in the East central area. They piled it up about 3 or 4 metres high. I was told that they sometimes dump the snow inro the river.

Incidentally, this was a different Moscow trip to the one I mentioned in my first post. 2 trips to Moscow in the space of 3 months. And how the weather changed was amazing. Summer to solid winter.

Enjoy especially the hooligans waiting for you next year at the stations, when the WC 2018 is played in Russia.
