I have just realised that in Test Matches, the England score of 477 leading to an England innings defeat is a record, beating the previous record, also by England, of 432 against Australia...<(

The only other score of 400 leading to an innings defeat was in England's previous test, the 4th, against India, so a pattern is developing. Hard to believe that Alastair Cook has just been voted Test Captain of the Year 2016.<( Let's not forget that England won the toss in both tests.

Game 3 of the BBL saw the Renegades and Thunder face off.
The Thunder won the toss an bowled first. It wasn't the fastest of innings for the Renegades but they still set 179. The Thunder were nothing short of disappointing in thier batting display. Slow and hopeless. In the end they were thumped by 49 runs.

RNG: 7/179 off 20 Overs.
Finch 79, Ferguson 38.
Russell 2/42, Green 1/29

THU: 130 off 19.1 Overs.
Gibson 39, Cummins 36.
Hogg 2/22, Bravo 2/27

Abbott 2/41, Botha 1/21

SIX: 140 off 16.2 overs
Billings 42, Roy 40
Tait 3/32, Rose 2/14

Game 5: Perth Scorchers vs Adelaide Strikers
SCO: 7/197 off 20 overs.
Bell 61, Turner 44*
Neser 2/37, Jordan 2/48

STR: 9/129 off 20 overs.
Hodge 56, Richardson 45.
Johnson 3/33, Willey 2/15

The Boxing Day test is underway with Pakistan batting first. We saw 51 overs until just before 3 the rain came and the rest of the day was abandoned
Didn't have too bad seats:

The highlight of the day was Lyon's first over. The 3rd ball of the over was supposed to of been a world record attempt at saying "Nice Garry" 3rd ball comes and gets a wicket sending the crowd nuts.
Day 2 was equally as frustrating with multiple rain delays. I suspect at the time of writing it's time to head to the bar as play doesn't look likely. It's not even heavy rain.

PAK: 6/310 OVER 101.2 REM 14.4
Azhar Ali 139*
Mohammad Amir 28*

Bird 3/91, Hazelwood 2/33.

In the Big Bash the boxing day game was between the Hurricanes and Stars. Stars won the day.

HUR: 4/188 off 20 Overs
Paine 91, Bailey 74
Hilfenhaus 3/38, Maxwell 1/12

STA: 3/191
Quiney 75, Maxwell 58*
Broad 2/36, Boyce 1/39

Giles has gone! (Ashley, not Clarke)

Great news...but who will follow in his footsteps, Chapple, Chilton, and outsider??

The boxing day test ended in a rather unlikely result. Australia managing to bowl out Pakistan and win by an innings and 18 runs. Considering a few days of rain including yesterdays downpour at around 1515.
With free entry after 1530 on day 5 I wandered down to the G and watched the last session:
dZimIT1.jpg

PAK: 9/443 dec.
Ali 205* Khan 65
Hazlewood 3/50, Bird 3/115

AUS: 8/624 dec.
Smith 165* Warner 144
Khan 3/131 Shah 3/207

PAK: 163
Ali 43. Ahmed 43
Starc 4/36. Lyon 3/33.

In the BBL:

Sixers vs Scorchers:

SCO: 8/130 off 20 overs
Marsh 31* Whiteman 28
Somerville 2/10 Abbott 2/30

SIX: 4/132 off 18 overs
Billings 40 Botha 30*
Tye 3/15 Marsh 1/13.

Thunder vs Heat

THU: 7/157 off 20 overs.
Morgan 52 Patterson 36
Badree 2/20 Wildermuth 2/40

HEA: 7/160 off 19.4 overs
Lynn 85 Wildermuth 29
Cummins 2/46 McKay 1/38

Renegades vs Scorchers

RNG: 8/148 off 20 overs
White 37 Harris 25
Willey 2/15 Turner 2/25

SCO: 6/152 off 20 overs.
Klinger 72 Marsh 34
Narine 2/20 Finch 1/17

Not a good game for the Renegades this one. Bravo was another victim of Eithad Stadiums turf and did his hamstring.
About thier only saving grace was the game was under the roof while it was chucking it down outside:

On Russel St during the rain
Heat vs Hurricanes

HUR: 9/173
Christian 33 Wells 28 off 20 overs
Wildermuth 2/26 Steketee 2/29

HEA: 3/174
Lynn 84* McCullum 72.
Broad 1/24 Boyce 1/29

The Hurricanes put up a rather competitive score after being in trouble early. I don't think they counted on McCullum and Lynn going nuts. Lynn smashed 4 4s & 7 6s including one that landed on the GABBA roof.

I don't think Bravo's hamstring strain looked like anything to do with the Docklands turf. I asked a mate of mine about this - he's a trainer with Port Adelaide and said that Docklands is around the middle of the pack as far as the surfaces at the nine regular AFL venues go, and that the risk before they fixed it was more for ankle and knee injuries than for muscle strains.

Bravo isn't the first West Indian player to get a soft tissue injury while fielding in the BBL over the last few years, while the full time professional cricketers playing don't tend to have any problem. Maybe the standard of performance in the BBL is higher than these T20 mercenaries are used to in IPL, T20 Blast, BPL etc, and they should start taking their training and pre-game warmups a bit more seriously?

In the final game of cricket of 2016 we saw what is now becoming a tradition to have the Strikers taking on the Sixers at a very full Adelaide oval.

STR: 9/152 off 20 overs
Dunk 37, Hodge 36
Abbott 5/16, Dwarshuis 2/34

SIX: 104 off 18.2 overs
Billings 40, Roy 18
Stanlake 3/17, Laughlin 2/10

Tommrow night is what is set to be a big one with 80,000 expected at the G for the Melbourne derby. KP is set to start for the Stars. Lucky enough I've got a front row seat for this one.

What are Sixers??

In last nights BBL double header 71 thousand spectators showed up to the Melbourne derby in a rain effected match. Renegades came out the victors by 7 runs by D/L method.
The derby would had to of featured the worst over of bowling in an over ever. Taking 11 balls to get through it.
RNG: 4/171 off 20 overs.
White 64* Cooper 36
Faulkner 1/19 Stoinis 1/26

STA: 9/151 off 18 overs (Rain reduced the Stars innings to 18 overs and chasing 159)
Wright 45 Faulkner 25
Hogg 3/22 Stevenson 1/21

In the other game it was one way traffic with the Scorchers thumping the Thunder

SCO: 4/177 off 20 overs.
Bell 45 M.Marsh 44*
Green 1/21 Cummins 1/28

THU: 8/127 off 20 overs
Cummins 39 Lenton 16
Willey 2/21 Tye 1/16

Younus Khan's latest test century, his 34th, was scored in Australia and apparently marks the 11th country in which he has scored such, the first person to reach this landmark. It's amazing really that he hasn't acquired more kudos, but I suppose Pakistan are well outside the cricketing establishment.

Speaking of cricketing establishment, Hampshire are taking advantage of their unfair continuation in the First Division next year by signing two South African test players on Kolpak terms for next season. Kyle Abbott is the pick, as he was playing test cricket only a couple of weeks ago with some success as an opening bowler, but has been lured with a long-term package. EEC regulations allow for this travesty, so I suppose Leave may at least achieve one good result! SA are touring here next summer too - perhaps they'll retaliate by selecting Ryan Maclaren, currently Hampshire's 'official' overseas player, for the tour.

Adelaide on it's own would be ok but Sydney has two teams. The Thunder and Sixers. Same with Melbourne they have two teams the Stars and Renegades.

Most people just refer to the teams by their nicknames.

American Football is similar (and to blame) for this habit, with teams being referred to by their nicknames, such as the Cowboys, 49's, etc.

Been sort of happening for years in Aussie rules. Some sides include the nickname as thier full name or changed thier name to suit like the premiers the Western Bulldogs even though thier official name is Footscray Football Club and for about 8 years North Melbourne ran around as The Kangaroos.
Most still refer to them by thier location at least.

I guess with the BBL they want it to be like American sports.

In recnt results:
3rd Commonwealth Bank Test series match:
AUS: 8/538 dec
Renshaw 183, Warner 113
Riaz 3/89, Ali, 2/70

PAK: 315
Kahn 175*, Ali 71
Hazelwood 4/55, Lyon 3/115

AUS: 2/241 dec
Khawaja 75*, Smith 59
Riaz 1/28, Shah 1/124

PAK: 244
Ahmed 72, Kahn 40
Hazelwood 3/29, O'Keefe 3/53

In BBL:
Hobart Hurricanes vs Adelaide Strikers
STR: 143 off 20 overs
HUR: 2/144 of 17.4 overs

Brisbane Heat vs Sydney Sixers
HEA: 6/186 off 20 overs
SIX 7/191 off 19.4 overs

Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Stars
STA: 8/166 off 20 overs
THU: 4/168 off 20 overs
Came down to the final ball this one with Morgan belting one for six.

Perth Scorchers vs Brisbane Heat
SCO: 6/173 off 20 overs
HEA: 1/174 off 14.4 overs
Lynn in this game went nuts with 11 sixes.

Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes
HUR: 8/161 off 20 overs
STR: 5/164 off 18.2 overs

And finally today Melbourne Renegades vs Melbourne Stars
STA: 7/200 off 20 overs
RNG: 9/154 off 20 overs
KP really set the tone early with the big hitting. The game had a bit of a first with installation of some temporary "Jumbotrons" hanging from the roof. With the roof shut it made it very very uncomfortable considering it was 36 degrees outside.

Tour Match ODI

Pakistan...334-7 (50 overs)
Babar Azam 98
Shajeel Khan 62
Umar Akmal 54
Green 3-59
Thornton 3-69

Cricket Australia XI...138 all out (36.2 overs)
Inglis 70
Hasan Ali 3-18

Eight of the side only posted single figure scores and it was only the innings of Inglis that gave their total even a hint of respectability.

In the recent BBL action:

Hobart Hurricanes vs Sydney Thunder
HUR: 8/161 off 20 overs
THU: 4/162 off 16.5 overs

Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Renegades
RNG: 8/170 off 20 overs
SIX: 4/171 off 19.3 overs

Melbourne Stars vs Adelaide Strikers
STR: 8/152 off 20 overs
STRS: 8/153 off 19.3 overs

Brisbane Heat vs Perth Scorchers
SCO: 5/156 off 20 overs
HEA:129 off 19.2 overs

And finally tonight an absolute batting exhibition.
Melbourne Renegades vs Hobart Hurricanes.

RNG: 4/222 off 20 overs.
Finch 63 off 40
Cooper 53 off 24

Reed 2/54, Short 1/18

HUR: 8/223 off 20 overs.
McDermott 114 off 52.
Bailey 59 off 42

Narine 3/27, Cooper 2/12.

An absolute astonishing game. Ebbed and flowed massively. The Renegades set a record 222. Hobart looked no chance. McDermott had other ideas scoring 114 before being dismissed. At that stage it looked like the Renegades were going to win.
16 was required off the final over. It went: 1 1ro 3wd 2 4 4 1 with Broad hitting the winning run.

It was a record amount of boundaries for the BBL, 58 boundaries broken up to 36 Fours and 22 sixes

Tour Match ODI

England XI...282 all out (48.5 overs)
Bairstow 64
Hales 51
Parvez Rasool 3-38

India "A"...283-4 (39.4 overs)
Rahane 91
Jackson 59
Pant 59

No England bowler took more than one wicket. India "A" won with over 10 overs to spare.
Hales needed that score after his no-show in Bangla, but not as much as Morgan does.

Friday saw the ODI series get underway with Australia beating Pakistan by 92 runs

AUS: 9/268 off 50 overs
Wade 100*, Maxwell 60
Ali 3/65, Wasim 2/35

PAK: 176 off 42.4 overs
Azam 33, Wasim 29
Faulkner 4/32, Cummins 3/33

And in the double header BBL:
Sydney Sixers vs Sydney Thunder

SIX: 9/99 off 20 overs
Hughes 20, Dwarshuis 19
Ahmed 4/14

THU: 2/100 off 10 overs
Patterson 38*, Vince 28
Abbott 2/36

An absolute stinker of a game this one. About the only highlight(if you can call it that) were two streakers who entered the field of play and led the security on a chase.

Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Stars

SCO: 7/134 off 20 overs
Tye 42, Agar 29*
Beer 2/12

STA: 3/137 off 17.2 overs
Pietersen 44*, Stoinis 40*
Richardson 2/26

The Stars set this one up nicely with great bowling leaving the Scorchers 4/13 early in thier innings. The win flung the Stars to top of the table with 2 games left.

England post a total of 350-7 (seven an over) against India in the ODI and still are beaten by India by three wickets.

A case of "anything you can do, I can do better"....in the words of the song..

I only came to the game (via my computer) at the halfway stage i.e. the end of the England innings and, looking at the score, it seemed that the batsmen only really got going in the last ten overs or so. 350 seemed an OK score (England had never lost a game after scoring so many, after all) but eminently gettable by Kohli and co in the mood they've been in these last few weeks - in fact, I thought England's only chance was to get a few early wickets, which, to be fair, they did, but unfortunately Kohli's wasn't among them.

Stats don't tell a whole story, but some here that give an indicator:-
No team has before won a game needing 351 before the last over (India had levelled the scores at the end of the 48th, and won it on the first ball of the 49th).
Kohli's century was his 17th in the second innings of a one day int, equalling Tendulkar's record. Kohli got his 17 in 96 innings, Tendulkar took 232! As Michael Vaughan tweeted, Kohli is the pre-eminent batsman in test, one day and T20 formats, the first individual to be bestowed with the accolade.
