Chorley from Wigan Season Ticket

Hi

Just wondering if a season ticket from Wigan to Chorley would be valid via either Bolton or Preston. Both seem to be the same distance to me but via Preston would be easiest.

It wouldn't be valid via Preston because that would involve a doubleback through Leyland.

Yes.

Although NRE shows journeys via Preston as valid for a Wigan-Chorley ticket despite the routeing guide easement that says otherwise:

700033 Journeys to or from Leyland via Chorley OR Wigan North Western may not doubleback
via Preston. This easement applies in both directions.

Or does this only apply where Leyland is the origin/destination of the journey?

Without consulting the Routeing Guide I would hazard a guess that it is.

Actually, upon checking NRE, it is giving itineraries via Preston, including the doubleback. It is also giving itineraries via Bolton and Leyland too. Although there are no easements allowing this doubleback so this seems like an anomaly.

Thanks, guys. It would be much easier for my friend to get a VT to Preston from WGN and then on to Chorley

If you change at Leyland then it is valid under the shortest route rule. If you change at Preston then it is valid because:
Wigan North Western is a routeing point itself (technically a member of Wigan Group)
Preston passes the fares check as a destination routeing point for a Wigan to Chorley journey
Preston to Chorley is a valid local journey in itself (through train)
The Virgin train from Wigan to Preston follows a valid mapped route between those two routeing points.

Because the mapped route and the local journey are validated in separate steps, the doubleback is irrelevant.
