Looks like GWR are also running a seat sale.

It's been running since last week, I posted a link to it earlier in this thread.

Some good prices, but unfortunately for me the sale started a few days after I'd bought advance tickets to Exeter, so I paid more than I needed to.

The train companies are always telling us to book early for the best prices, but often it can be cheaper to wait until there's a sale.

I have come to the conclusion that the TPE App is a waste of phone space, attempting to buy a ticket is a nightmare.

If I can purchase this ticket from Manchester to Hull for the 31st March it will be a miracle.

Edit - Must be an issue with the TPE system as I've tried multiple cards, double checking the card numbers & my address but keeps coming up "can't be processed".

(Anybody wondering it is the 19:26 service which is booked to reverse direction at Leeds and head to Selby via Castleford)

Seems like it.
My card gets approved then it's rejected by the app itself.
Very very frustrating and TPE web support will be getting a call in the morning. Virgin Red app has done the same error before but I never worked out why. Maybe everyone's rushed to use the app at once and it's overwhelmed what is clearly a very unstable application.

Hmmm, I've just used the app on 2 different devices and didn't have any issues at all. Once with a card, once with a gift voucher.

It's nice to see railcards included in the offer, TPE have just got about £50 worth of custom they wouldn't otherwise have got.

The lack of option to enter a 'via' point in the app is very frustrating though as it means it's impossible to do Liverpool-Glasgow via Manchester (TPE & connections advances aren't included seemingly, just TPE only)

It's a lot more stable now yet still I get this same error over and over... Screenshot_20170111-215957.png

Is this an attempt to purchase a ticket for a journey on a through train from origin to destination?

Yes. I'm trying to book Newcastle to Leeds, 11/02/17 on the 0748 out and 1943 return.

Website is hopelessly unstable again too with a crash most times I attempt a purchase. Think it's getting left alone for tonight.

Edit- site unavailable until 7am now for maintainance purposes. Clearly something wasn't quite right.

I've also been trying to book via the TPE app, I was getting error messages when trying to select a journey. It's a really badly designed app, not user friendly at all. The ticket booking part is really just a web browser showing a version of their mobile site. I'd rather just go to the mobile site than use an app that does the same thing.

Other TOCs do it much better. I'm not a fan of XC, but their app is excellent.

To kick-start the new year, and celebrate our fantastic new app, we're treating existing customers to a whopping 50% off train tickets. To get this exclusive offer, simply download the app and use the code NEWAPP

Can you use the discount code on the main site, without using the app?

I couldn't see a way of inputting the discount code on the website.

I will attempt to purchase a ticket again to see if it works

Edit - Nope, keeps rejecting payment, even changing cards. Like TPE, it is completely useless App, waste of phone space.

Just how on earth do you buy gift vouchers on the website, complete and utter joke of a site which lacks a search feature

Does anyone else feel it's a tad discriminatory for a TOC to offer cheaper fares on an app than on their own website?

I can't see what's so great about an app anyway - not only are mobile phones less secure than your average desktop or laptop, they're also a lot more fiddly to use. Why bother?

I've been informed that there's an update going out tonight to hopefully resolve any issues involved with payment.

There was also one last night between midnight and 1am I believe. Although that may have just been routine maintenance.

Discriminatory no. If you give people a good reason to download your app, there's a good chance you'll get them to purchase their tickets there rather than from rival TOCs (assuming of course that the app doesn't screw up <D).

I do agree that apps in general can be a bit pointless, especially where they are basically a watered down version of the website. It seems almost every website has a prompt upon visiting, flaunting their crappy free app.

There was indeed also routine maintenance which appears to have stabilised the app itself but not fixed the payment issue.

The app is quite poor. I often use the 'go via' and 'avoid' options but these are not present on the app. The app also makes it hard to view the cheapest fares, as you can only see a few fares on the screen at a time. Perhaps this is why they are pushing it.

Seems the payment issue is with the website as I've just tried to purchase a gift voucher (after eventually locating the option).

If a customer with a disability is unable to use the app, but is able to use one or more other method (desktop website, mobile website, telesales, TVM or a good old ticket office), they will be charged more than they would if it weren't for their disability. Would this not count as discrimination?

It's alright for TPE to say call Web Support on a 0344 number, but considering that could cost the customer upto 40p a minute from a mobile phone it isn't good enough. Especially if you are on hold for 20+ minutes.

But looking at Twitter seems I'm not the only person having issues

On a brighter note, this VTEC offer is available with child discounts so I can get First Class London<>Edinburgh for £17.65 single on some morning trains (£20.60 on some later on). :D

Any news/rumours of Northern doing a £10 day ranger ticket with tokens collected from newspapers yet?

I tweeted @NorthernOffers on the 6th January with the same question and received the following teasing reply...

@karljohnson1960 Hi Karl :) Keep an eye out for new press offers on the NorthernOffers and NorthernAssist Twitter accounts :)

It's still a problem this evening, I get through the Credit Card section but the site can't take the payment. Quite annoying.

Pleased to see the post from Karl re the Northern £10 offer.

Indeed, the app hasn't been updated yet so just a case of sitting and waiting. Was apparently going to be today but seems not.

Never knew that 0344 numbers were included, thought it was just 0345/0370 which were included in inclusive minutes with 0344 costing extra

All 03 numbers are priced the same as 01/02 numbers.

The only reason for 0344/0345/0370 numbers being common is they're available for migration for companies moving from the more expensive 08xx numbers.

I can't see what's so great about an app anyway - not only are mobile phones less secure than your average desktop or laptop, they're also a lot more fiddly to use. Why bother?

What's less secure about an app on a phone?
