Tyne Valley Line Timetables - Dec17/Dec19

Hi,

Does anybody have a good detailed list of what the Timetable will be like on the Tyne Valley Line come the new Timetables of Dec 17 and Dec 19 - These being the two periods when 'big' changes are promised under the Arriva Franchise.

I understand frequency will double along sections of the line during busier periods. Do you have any extensive details?

I'm a regular user of the line and am interested in what we'll be getting - I'd love to see the first train out of Carlisle an hour earlier but appreciate its unlikely to happen (Even though there's a service from Hexham to Newcastle at 0612 which could be extended to begin here in Carlisle!)

Also, what sort of units are we expecting to be used?

I'd love to see the first train out of Carlisle an hour earlier but appreciate its unlikely to happen (Even though there's a service from Hexham to Newcastle at 0612 which could be extended to begin here in Carlisle!)

I think that's actually down to signalbox opening hours more than anything else.

Although the Tyne Valley line has been open 24/7 for the past year due to the
closure of the S+C, the boxes are normally closed overnight to keep costs down.

Refurbished class 158s will be used on the hourly "Northern Connect" Middlesbrough - Newcastle - Carlisle semi-fast service. I don't believe it's known for certain what will work the other services, though I would expect to see an expanded fleet of 156s at Heaton.

There'll be an additional arrival in Carlisle from Newcastle before 09:00, and at least one additional departure from Carlisle to arrive in Newcastle before 10:00 than at present, but there seems to be no requirement for an earlier first departure from Carlisle.

I don't think that anything additional has been announced publically since the initial franchise announcement back in December 2015.

You can see details of how many stops each station will receive in defined timebands in the spreadsheets at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/northern-rail-2016-rail-franchise-agreement (TSR2 = 2017, TSR3=2019). The Tyne Valley service is very near the top.

IIRC, by 2019 the weekday service will be an hourly fast service calling at Hexham and Prudhoe only, and an hourly slower service with the less busy stations only getting a stop every 2 hours.

Edit: Having checked these changes were in fact due in Dec 2017, they will almost certainly not occur until 2018.

What kind of journey times are we looking at for the Tyne Valley fasts?

The current 'fast' services - that's those that only stop at Haltwhistle, Hexham, Prudhoe and Metro Centre - currently do Carlisle to Newcastle in about 1hr 20/25mins.

The current 'stopper' services are roughly 1hr 30/40mins. The calling pattern changes throughout the day, likes of Dunston and Blaydon having irregular stopping patterns.

80 minutes is proposed for the fast services: Occasional examples of the current Newcastle - Carlisle service achieve similar timings, but I think the idea is that most of the faster trains will.
