I have been applying for trainee driver positions as and when they come up and have noted that some TOC's ask you to specify any endorsements on your license. I drive for a living and unfortunately have amassed six points on my license. 3 points a couple years ago for stupidly using a mobile at the wheel and more recently I was caught by a camera doing 25mph in a 20 zone. Is this information checked by operators prior to employment or during the application process. I have stated the convictions on applications that call for it. But I am wondering if these will hinder my chances especially the using a mobile offence. Thanks.

I'm not saying it'll be the case in this scenario but I know this kind of thing has certainly been used in the past to determine a yes or a no.

I know this because I has a disagreement with a manager who had admitted this being a factor in them not giving someone a job earlier that year.

I said that it's extremely harsh but there argument was 'at some stage that individual made a serious error in judgement' .

Gotta say that I didn't really have much of a comeback to that. I suppose in terms of whittling down numbers or there being fine lines between applicants it's almost natural they'd use something like that......especially in safety critical grades.

There's lots of reasons you csn end up with points on your licence these days such as speeding.....Mobile phones......seat belts and many more serious offences where points accompanied bans etc, so in an industry dominated by safety and the following of laws, rules and regulations it wouldn't surprise me if they checked these things more frequently than they used to.

I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear mate.

They can of course ask you for evidence of what they are for, FWIW. I do see the point - if you're unable to follow the rules of the road, are you able to follow the strict rules of the Railway?

Sorry if that sounds a little harsh, but for some people the answer that gives will correctly be "no, they won't be able to follow the strict rules of the Railway".

Oh of course that's why I stressed there are a few reasons that points can be on a licence unlike just for speeding which is pretty much all it used to be......If you've got points associated with a ban for alcohol offences or mobile phone offences you're gonna struggle.

You're very unlucky if you don't get a job because you've got 3 points on your license for speeding for example as that can pretty much happen to anyone nowadays given how smooth modern cars are and the amount of cameras there are......very easy to innocently be caught out.

However if we call a spade a spade and break it down to the bare bones, even if it was purely unintentional you've not paid attention.....and you've gone against rules and regulations......Both of which are extremely important to the grade.

So you can certainly see why they turn people away and use it as a sifting technique.
