From Manchester Victoria, Salford Central & Salford Crescent you can catch trains in either direction to Blackburn (via Rochdale & Todmorden Curve, or via Bolton)

In the evening rush hour both trains depart Salford at about the same time, and both have Blackburn as the final destination. The automated announcements on the platform do not make it very clear which one's which which can lead to some confusion. Travellers to Blackburn are 45 minutes better off going via Bolton.

Birmingham New St to Wolverhampton. Back in the day, the Preston - BNS would arrive in Platform 1, and then depart heading the same way to go back north. Often a Roarer.

Pre-Tyne & Wear Metro, trains from Whitley Bay, etc. would depart for Newcastle in both directions. (Of course this still applies with regards to the Metro.)

Gloucester to Cardiff is possible - is there a direct service via Bristol Parkway?

Birmingham New Street where, Walsall line fast trains enter & depart, to & from the West, stoppers to & from the East, i think some XC to/from Manchester are routed to go through Bescot & Aston rather than reverse at BHM.

Springburn to Glasgow Queen St, either via the Cowlairs chord to High Level or via Alexandra Parade to Low Level.

I refer to my earlier post regarding differing routes in the London area. In this case would it not make sense to advertise the longer route as only going as far as the point beyond which it would be quicker to take the alternative? Those in the know could still take the longer route if they so wished.

Yes it would make sense.

I believe Leeds to York via Harrogate does this - announced at Leeds as the service to Poppleton (final stop before York) as there are frequent direct services to York which are much quicker.

York to Leeds?

Can be reached by:

Heading 'south' out of York and using the direct route via Colton Junction etc.
Heading 'north' out of York via the Harrogate line.

Alan.

Also for a nice bit of symmetry, Leeds to York.

Harrogate trains head west along the Airedale line, direct trains run east.

On Saturday mornings, Leeds has two trains heading to London departing at the same time in opposite directions. The 0738 to Kings Cross leaving easterly via Hambleton (avoiding Wakefield Westgate) and the 0738 to St Pancras leaving westerly via Wakefield Westgate.

Sunderland to York. VTEC (and formerly TPE) head north, Grand Central head south.

While both are in London are they not technically different destinations?
I was thinking the same of mm333's Leeds example, but I guess you could say that Kings Cross-St Pancras is one destination. Don't think you'd get away with Paddington/Marylebone though.

Slade Green to London (London Bridge/Cannon Street/etc.) would be one that I don't think has been mentioned yet. Ditto neighbouring stations: Erith, Barnehurst, Crayford, etc., though in practice, the further you are from Slade Green, the less likely you are to consider going via the 'long' way round).

Do the rules of this thread require direct trains only? If you are allowed to change trains, then you could add a large number of additional locations where reasonable routes might start off in either direction. A couple of examples: Falmer to London, or stations between Guildford and Reigate to London, or stations between Wokingham and Guildford to London, etc.)

. In the reverse direction departures from Waterloo show Virginia Water as the last point at which it would not be quicker to go via the Weybridge direct train.

Not true anymore. They are shown as Weybridge.

18.05 to Farnham via Ascot used to be shown as destination Frimley, but now shown as Farnham.

From Manchester Oxford Road and the through platforms at Piccadilly, trains to Leeds will soon start departing in the opposite direction.

Leeds to York via Castleford.
