Yes the better trains for us to use would be 319s for the extra coach and toilets.. wouldn't be able to stop at Normans Bay or Pevensey Bay.. but then there's only one 313 that currently stops at Normans Bay (each direction) once a day.

Do many people get on or off at them two stops? Would the guard letting them in/out the local door be an option?

The 319s don't have local door control so you'd need to spend a fair bit of money to put that, along with guard operation gear, into the 319s.

I'm fairly sure that most pre-privatisation units are not fitted with SDO, so there's no need to keep asking about each class. In fact, are any BR units fitted as such?

Depending on if you class the HST as a unit. Seriously i don't think so, but lots have local door controls. Can't think of any Doo examples. But they wouldn't need it.

The re-tractioned SWTs class 455s have got SDO fitted so have the class 465s

Have the re-tractioned 455s really got SDO? The 5car conversion 458s did but I doubt the 455s have.

The 465 SDO was very primative with first car /last car /both first and last car not opening and doesn't have any of the modern safety additions on the newer systems so isn't actually usable.

I suspect SpacePhoenix is getting confused between SDO and an older, more primitive unit/carriage lock-out system. As above I'm fairly sure that the Class 455s are not being fitted out.

That system seems to be called "Unit De-Select" increasingly.

The trains have also been fitted with selective door opening (SDO) in order to deal with short platforms on the SWT network.

Indeed 458/5s. That article isn't as clear as it could be clear unless you read it carefully but the last 4 paragraphs (including SDO mention) are about 458/5s not 455s.

Quite a few limits on the coastway stations.

I went searching for any info on the platform lengths and actually found my own thread on here from 3 years ago asking about much the same thing! D'oh.

That said, no info on platform lengths. Assuming only the peak demand would be where doubling up would be necessary, what short platforms ( i.e. 6 car or less) are there between West Worthing and Brighton? ...and are any of those uneconomical to extend due to physical barriers such as level crossings etc.?

Aldrington, Fishersgate, Lancing and East worthing. No physical barriers at any of them as such, but Most don't have the passenger flow to justify lengthening, but as said before, its a non starter with the amount of work required to bring the 313's up to spec and depot compatible.

Not sure if this is the best place for this, but I think I saw a 2-car 313 in a siding not too far north of King's Cross on my way past. Was I seeing things? If it exists does anyone know the reasons for it, and is the unit in service like this?

I'm sure I read something about it somewhere but despite searching I can't find anything!

I think that it's Pantograph car is currently at Selhurst receiving attention after it fell off the jacks in the depot (?)

For a very short and unhelpfull period - NSE had a DC only 2 car working that traffic rich Watford - Croxley Green service circa 1986 - of course it gapped right over the throat at Watford Junction DC lines , so that , was the end of that good idea. :(

Yes, it's just south of Hornsey depot. I saw it too.

Doubt it, I'm sure that the Class 700s would fit if they were reduced to six-car length.

The Class 700's wouldn't be able to be used on the NCL as Health & Safety states that any train using the Moorgate tunnel sections need to have cab end doors to assist evacuation of trains in the tunnel section. That's the reason behind the 717 having cab end doors.

I didn't say that they would be used in passenger service.

Have the GN class 313s been withdrawn yet or are GTR still waiting for more 717s to be delivered? (It's been a long time since I've been up that way!)
