That might have nothing to do with the format though, the barrier may have been set to reject certain tickets (e.g. Off Peak or railcard discounted).

It was a fairly bog standard AP. I suppose they might want to look at all AP tickets, but it rather defeats the object of having the barriers in the first place.

Entirely likely the barriers are unreliable of course (which would certainly fit with my experience of regularly stuffing a range of different, yet perfectly valid tickets, into the barriers at Leeds only for the barriers not to open).

I also approve of the Rail Alphabet.

It frustrates me that nobody's thought to implement a shopping basket system on TVMs yet, I often travel with people ineligible for railcards and it makes buying tickets massively inefficient and a pain, as I have to go through the whole process twice.

The machines in Colchester station have a shopping basket - surprised me when I used one last week.

It is just as likely that the mag stripe on the ticket was corrupted, or that it hadn't been encoded correctly by the issuing TVM. It is old technology that, in many ways, is incompatible with the modern world.

I travelled to Newcastle today and while I was there successfully managed to pickup a ticket from the new GR Parkeon machine. I have to say I am very impressed. Compared with others the font is bold and clear, the use of an arrow to signify origin to destination I believe is better from the passenger perspective. Lastly there is no evidence of overlapping text, clearly the implementation is superior compared to the same machines at northern.

The ability to buy advance tickets is something which I find useful and although was not able to purchase on this occasion due to the discount on my ticket being web only.

Although it is not perfect; the machine did not seem to register that London Marylebone existed and the display of results is not the clearest when it comes to choosing what advance ticket you want, in that it shows every tier of tickets available on any train in the results but can only show 3 at a time. This could necessitate a lot of scrolling and the possibility of a user thinking that there is no availability as a result.

I do think it's now possible to spell the month in full, so doing away with the FBY and DMR writing.

These are the best type of new ticket design yet. If only they could all be like this.

Yes, the Leeds ones have always been a bit ropey. Fortunately I have one of those electric card thingy's now.

I had a strange occurance today.

I've bought a ticket over the phone with a TOC at the start of the week and collected it from the Virgin ticket machines at Leeds. It was a single new type of ticket.

Bought another ticket for a journey with the same TOC over the phone, collected it from the same bank of machines at Leeds. I was surprised to find the more traditional ticket with reservation ! I almost walked away without the reservation, expecting it to be the new type.

That said, at least the traditional type is readable !

Just wait until the Parkeon machines arrive , the print is so much better then the current machines.

I find the way the route restriction is written on the new style tickets to be somewhat misleading. Example attached:

Off Peak Return
Valid for one journey
from Bolton
to Birkenhead Central
Valid only via Manchester

The ticket is also valid on all cheaper ticketed routes; ie via Wigan, so not 'only' via Manchester.

Perhaps a solution would be to have the route written as 'Valid via Manchester, or via Wigan' but for routes with 3+ options it might get congested.

Thoughts?

For 'average joe' I think it's good enough. The problem with things like "Valid via Manchester" is that some, who seek to exploit the rules for their own gain, will argue it is then an option to go via the named place, rather than a restriction ("if it was a restriction it would say 'only valid...' on it"), and attempt to use a more expensive route on a cheaper ticket.

This isn't a new issue, as the old tickets were just the same (if a little more cryptic).

In this particular case, changing the "via Manchester" route to "any permitted" (as used by routes such as Darwen-Birkenhead Central) would make things clearer. I don't know of any routes between Bolton and Birkenhead Central which avoid both Manchester and Wigan, although i haven't checked the easements.

What I think is more of a problem is the way that online journey planners deny that tickets like this are valid via Wigan at all, and compound this fault by not offering change of route excesses. If they offered appropriate tickets to people, it wouldn't matter too much what was printed on them as everyone would get used to them.

Without going though 63 pages, is it just me, without reading glasses (I'm over 40:D:D) the print is so small on tickets. I find it a bit of a pain to keep getting my glasses out at stations, to check the dates, seat reservations etc .

I think it might be better if printers had a higher resolution (as some now do). It would certainly make things easier to read from a distance (for staff) as well as allowing bolder type, or even different typefaces.

The paper from RDG titled "Replacing Any Permitted as a Route"

Is this document available for public consumption, and if so can we have a link.

I seem to remember this being in the news over Christmas when the media were having another go at the railway.

They said they were looking at getting rid of confusing terms like 'London Terminals' and 'Any Permitted'.

Any Permitted is on the way out so that isn't going to happen

I don't know if this is anything to do with this or just a mistake by the ticket machine, but I collected an Inverness-Edinburgh ticket routed any permitted (rather than route "via Aviemore") and instead of the usual "this ticket is valid via any permitted route" section, there was no route information at all on the ticket. The guard on the Edinburgh-Aberdeen portion of the journey wasn't convinced it was valid but I asked her to check on her ticket machine and as the prices matched she let me go on my way!

As discussed at the time, it will be interesting what they replace London Terminals with (in the space available) for areas such as SWT where there are usually about 9 available terminals, all the way from Paddington to London Bridge inclusive..

I'd hazard a guess that a link to the available stations will be included (if there's space) instead of writing them all out, in the same way that a link to the validity restriction is provided. Or even combine the two.

I agree. Often simplification, although well intended, ends up with up with it becoming more complicated. Although knowing the railway they'll try and restrict passengers travelling to alternative terminals resulting in price increases for those that wish to do so....

Are you seriously suggesting that they would replace the origin/destination with a link, such that that everyone who reads the ticket will have to visit a website to find out something so basic as where that ticket is for travel to/from?

No. I'm not 'seriously suggesting' they replace the destination with a link. Try reading my post, particularly the word 'included'.

The destination would be printed as 'London CIV' or 'London Terminals', just like it is now.

Below that would be a link explaining which stations are available. No 'replacing' necessary. I really don't see how you're having difficulty understanding that.

What would a ticket from Glasgow to London show?

How about Brighton to London?

Valid for one journey
from Glasgow Central/Queen St
to London (See nre.co.uk/GLC/EUS)
Valid via any permitted route
See restrictions nre.co.uk/3A

the link to nre.co.uk/GLC/EUS could then contain details of available terminii from Glasgow to London. /GLC/MAN would show available Manchester stations, etc

Would probably fit on the existing 'new' format

The majority of passengers would be travelling to either Euston or KGX so the potential for confusion or overcomplication would be small

You were replying to the question of what would replace "London Terminals".

Try reading my post...I really don't see how you're having difficulty understanding that.

Is it just me, or does that sound like you are being rude?
