Trivia: Trains that have power sockets.

Hi all. I am just trying to make a list of all stock that has plug sockets.

So far i can think of the following:

165 - No plug sockets in First Class or Standard Class. One plug socket by each set of doors (they say "not for public use" and are unfortunately almost always switched off).

166 - No plug sockets in First Class or Standard Class. One plug socket by each set of doors (they say "not for public use" and are unfortunately almost always switched off).

168 - They have plug sockets next to every seat. Also one plug socket by each set of doors (they say "not for public use" but they always work and lots of people still use them).

170 - They have plug sockets next to every seat in First Class. No plug sockets in Standard Class. One plug socket by each set of doors (they say "not for public use" but they always work and lots of people still use them).

171 - They have plug sockets next to every seat in First Class. No plug sockets in Standard Class. One plug socket by each set of doors (they say "not for public use" but they always work and lots of people still use them).

172 - No plug sockets. One plug socket by each set of doors (they say "not for public use" but they always work and lots of people still use them).

185 - They have plug sockets next to every seat in both First Class and Standard Class. One plug socket at each end of each coach (they say "not for public use" but they always work and lots of people still use them).

If anyone can provide any information about what other trains have them and where they are located and what classes they are in that would be much appreciated.

Also out of interest why do the plug sockets by the doors on many trains say "not for public use"? Is this just the TOCs trying to be as difficult and unfriendly as possible? I see people use these (especially on the older 375s and 377s) almost every day (and i use them myself very regularly as well [probably at least three or four times a week]).

I do recall reading that those "Not for public use" sockets are often affected by the fluctuations in electrical supply to the train, hence it's your own fault if they fry your phone. Personally I'd keep away from them. I wouldn't consider sitting by a door charging your device, especially on a busy EMU in London, to be a very smart idea either.

185s only have sockets at tables in standard class too.

You are slightly wrong about 444s, there is power at the tables in the DMOS. The other end of the train to the first class. You'll see people making a dash for that coach when it is busy.

Do bear in mind that sockets labelled "Not for public use" are NOT for public use. There was recently an incident where a traveller was arrested after having a pop at transport police, when he was caught charging his phone off one such socket.

Those sockets are usually not designed to be operated whilst the train is in motion and could easily cause a power surge in the charger.

Exactly this, there's no kind of surge protection on the cleaners' sockets.

<pedantic engineer> Is a plug socket - a plug or socket or both (and hence one of those power extension cubes), why not just call it a "power socket" as it is defined in BS1363 1947 (Type G if being really pedantic)

On Greater Anglia 170s only the 2-cars had plug sockets in 1st the 3-cars (201-8) where not fitted. The whole fleet is now going through works & socketscwill be fitted throughout.

Virgin MKIII / IV have a power socket for each pair of airline seats and 2 sockets per table

A Pendolino has 2 power sockets at each table

Also out of interest why do the plug sockets by the doors on many trains say "not for public use"? Is this just the TOCs trying to be as difficult and unfriendly as possible? I see people use these (especially on the older 375s and 377s) almost every day (and i use them myself very regularly as well [probably at least three or four times a week]).

I think the sockets in Standard on 185s are only at the table seats (two per table). If there are any others they are well enough hidden that I haven't found them!

EMT is now doing an upgrade to its 158s. As well as retention toilets and information displays this includes two USB sockets in a little box underneath each pair of seats, also extremely well hidden unless you know they're there. I hope this bit of skimping won't be repeated elsewhere, as I regard USB sockets as an optional extra (a phone should last any journey as long as you charge it beforehand and don't use it constantly, and you probably have the charger with you in any case). However 240V sockets should be treated as a necessity (a laptop may not last a journey).

Irish Rail stock (for completeness):

De Dietrich stock - two sockets under each table, sockets also on airline seats (unsure of number but likely one)
Mark 4's - two sockets, one each side of table and one in airline bays.
ICR's - two sockets under the table and two sockets at each airline bay.

Rest just have equipment sockets not for public use in various places

Not sure on NIR stock as it's been years since I was up there (soon to be rectified though!)

222s have one socket in the wall next to each pair of seats in Standard.

373s (unrefurbished) have sockets in some coaches but not all. In Standard they is one socket in the side wall next to each pair of seats, alternating UK and Continental in successive rows. The seating plan on the website shows full detail.

374s have two sockets, one UK and one Continental, in a hard-to-find position under each pair of seats.

The TPE 350/4's have sockets at all 1st class seats and only on the table seats in standard class.

The 185's have sockets at all 1st class seats, the disabled seating area and tables only in standard. This changes this year when there will be one socket for every 2 seats on the train after the refurbishment.

The sockets by the gangway ends / cab doors are correctly NOT for public use due to the voltage that goes through them. I've seen conductors point this out to people in the past as well.
