Hi guys

A little different from the typical discussions, I was wondering if a few of you may know some great pubs to visit at Railway stations in the U.K.?

I do enjoy a nice pint of ale when I have time off work and enjoy it even more if it can involve Rail at the same time!

Thinking more quirky puns rather than the tupical Wetherspoons or sports bars we have at some of the bigger stations. I know of a few places, such as The Sheffield Tap.

Any places people could suggest would be greatly appreciated :)

Thanks in advance

Jonny

Nice little pub on the northbound NR platform at Ravenglass a few years ago, which I'm presuming is still there!

Anywhere but here...
I wouldn't recommend Stalybridge. On my visit it was very expensive, the staff were rude, the beer was terrible and it wasn't particularly clean. Slightly more pleasant is Manningtree, decent little bar with a dartboard. Best pub I've visited on a station is Porthmadog, if you have time to go there make sure you visit Spooners Bar at the Porthmadog Harbour station. Absolutely wonderful pub with a great view across the estuary and a fine selection of ales.

you are the only person i have ever encountered who has criticised the beer or service at Stalybridge!

You must have had it on an off day.

I'm going to include the Left Luggage Room at Monkseaton Metro because it was once a railway station, and because the ale and gin selection really is very very good.

Beyond that, I'm struggling to add to the list of usual suspects.

Reading: The Three Guineas (recently refurbished), usually 4-5 hand pumps on
Weston-Super-Mare: "Off the Rails" a little bar / waiting area on the main platform.
Didcot: The Prince of Wales, ok not on the station but directly across the road with views of stuff passing by.

If we're doing pubs next to a station try the Beer Engine, Newton St Cyres

As mentioned above Paddington & 3 Guineas, spent more time in these than probably good for me

Oh for the Reading station of old (no ticket barriers) when you could wall straight out of The Three Guineas directly onto the platform and onto your westbound HST!

Agreed - the beer selection is phenomenal! And they also do excellent home made sausage rolls...

Other good station pubs not mentioned yet: Hebden Bridge (Parcel Office), Whitby (The Waiting Room), Carnforth (The Snug), and on the ELR (Trackside and Buffer Stops) and Ffestiniog (Spooners). There's also a new place on Carlisle (301 miles from London) that I haven't tried yet but looks worth a visit. Also, not in stations but under them: Manchester Piccadilly (Cloudwater, Beer Nouveau, and Alphabet Taps), Wigan (Wigan Central), and Leeds (Hopped)

Cheers!

Wolverhampton - The Great Western - 5 min walk - superb pub.

+1

Not only a great pub, but also serves Bathams Bitter

Whilst in the area, Codsall station has a cracking pub, another Holdens establishment as per the Western.

Huddersfield - Head of Steam & Kings Head

I had a drink in the Head of Steam once and found it quite pleasant. But as you can (or could) walk into it from the street side and out again onto the platform, and as they have now installed ticket barriers in the main part of the station, I wonder if that is now a way of getting a free ride, or are there barriers in the pub?

Go there on a Sunday lunchtime , you get gratis Wolves tapas - slices of excellent pork pie and Black Pudding. Excellent , friendly pub. Cheese and Onion Cobs of a superlative nature.

You can tell I am a big fan.

Those cobs + a couple of Bathams were my hangover medicine / pre match breakfast on any given Saturday for years!

The Draughtsman Alehouse on Platform 3 at Doncaster has been "opening soon" for 3 months now !

A quick peek suggests it might actually open in April.

The two pubs on stations I often go to are the one on Sheffield station (mentioned previously) but, more often, The Mallard on Worksop station. It's small but friendly, with a great choice of beer, cider and crisps (it often wins CAMRA awards) and they have beer festivals a few times a year!

Is there still one at Preston? not been for about 15-20 years.
back then it hadn't changed since the 70s, it had character and old train photos on the wall, in fact you could buy them.
think it had a Burger King next door joined on to it, never seen a burger joint on a platform before!

It was there last year, and I had a decidedly average pint.

The Burger King is now inside the St George's Centre.

Porthmadog (National Rail station) When I was last year about 2 years ago there was a pub in the old station buildings.
Aberystwyth- Wetherspoons who occupy the old ticket office, old buffet, old enquiry office and part of the concourse.
