Jeeeeeeeppppppeeeeeerrrrrrrssssss!

For those of you who haven't seen it yet, this guy takes flailing to a whole new level. I've never seen anything quite like it, and it sure gives the rest of us a bad name. I'd comment on his choice of motive power but let's not go there...How he didn't get booted off the railway at the next station I'll never know...

Quite a sensible quote at the end of this one...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSQzSs56jVE

What is the appeal of flailing and leaning out of a moving train window, it's embarrassing to watch... I've noticed it's mainly teenage boys with no life outside of railways that seem to do it, everyone else is sat down with a beer or coffee enjoying the atmosphere...

Couldn't agree more. I just watched that video and it made me chuckle.

You mean the ones eho paid for a permit and contributed to the costs of the event?

Yes those are the ones, including myself who paid for 2xadults to travel on the trains so therefore "contributing to the event".

Sorry they spoilt your pictures. I didn't seem to have a problem when i visited that event.

The GCR actually do a really good lineside photography pass. Ithink it costs £45 for a year. Perhaps you should check it out. You do have to wear a high viz though what with it being next to the railway line which might spoil some pictures.

The GCR operates a lineside photography permit system. Permits are available to purchase for members of Friends of the Great Central Main Line who are aged 18 or over. Without a permit, you are not permitted to access the GCR lineside.

I am still not sure what you want opinions on!

Apologies if its not clear, I was asking for opinions on two aspects, one was leaning out of first carriage windows, next to the loco, (with hi viz clothing on), the second was wearing hi viz clothing when it was unnecessary and you are not a volunteer, ie walking around station platforms, standing in fields etc, sorry If I wasnt clear.

Its not bad is it for £45 a year, its a great privilege to be able to go lineside, many railways don`t or unable to allow it. I usually take different ones out on a yearly basis, I presently have a Worth Valley lineside pass, but sometimes never get chance to use them, to it all contributes to the railways anyway, so nothing lost.

It's not the hi-visibility wearers that annoy me, it's those who block everyone's view and opportunity for a photo that annoy me.

Yes I agree, some photographers are terrible, they`ll knock you over trying to get a shot, the majority though are courteous, I always try to look around and usually ask if I`m stood next to some one to make sure I`m not in anyone's way, its difficult at gals of course and you have to accept certain tolerances, its all down to good manners really of course, like most things in life. One of my personal bugbears is photographer who come up behind you and poke a lens too close to your head without letting you know, one did this at the Great Central last year and as I turned round I knocked him for a six, didnt know he was there, I`m a bit deaf anyway, having spent too many years infront of Marshall stacks, all they have to say is I`m behind you, the eyes in the back of my head don`t work too well!

Yes of course Mark and the railway do appreciate your support and contribution, but surely you must realise that if people pay extra for lineside passes, they can`t forever be looking round to see if someone is photographing from a bridge or public area to make sure they are not in the way, some may do so of course if its practical and doesn't interfere with the shot they want to get.

i think hanging out of the window is stupid but we have all done it! ( perhaps not to the extent shown above!)

I think wearing high viz when you don't need to is stupid. I cant wait to get mine off! However I have worked on sites ( not railway) where facilities for changing are limited and often below the legal minimum. Basically, you go home in your high viz or get changed in a puddle. I would challenge it now. I did't then.

Yes I agree, its were practical, when I volunteered on the PW at the East lancs we would often have to walk across platforms in vi viz gear, although, it was against railway policy, we could changed every time we had to access the platforms of course and this was recognised. Railways essentially use orange hi viz, my understanding is that orange doesn't clash with light signalling, road worker use the green hi viz, which to me always seems to clash at galas.

I was at the Severn Valley on the same day as 'Kevin', I seem to remember him being spoken to very severely by staff at the end of the day.

Flailers, wtf is that all about? And, if they're not flailing, they are pulling what can only be described as a neo-nazi salute.

Maybe I'm getting old.

If people want to lean out the window then that's up to them. It's all part of a gala not my cup of tea but this is going a bit far.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uc8SX7iJxcQ

Hmm, in the last clip seems like he found his parents bondage equipment and not being that wise to the world, decided to use it for the reasons he thought it was for.

In some cases I think that the label 'he needs to get laid' is uncalled for but it was suggested in the video captions and in this case I think they are completely right. We know the saying often goes that 'there is someone out there for everyone' but I think that theory may well be proven wrong in this case.

I have done a fair amount of "Window Hanging" over the years normally only on regular loco hauled services with my head hardly out of the window (I can't be bothered getting right up front with the nutters at galas). Dangling right out of the window and flailing I just don't get.

That said I have been going to death metal gigs for about 25 years now and when younger would partake in stage diving and getting in to the mosh at the front. Bit different to behaving like a nutter surrounded by regular passengers and their kids though. Not many parents take their kids down the front of a Napalm Death or Behemoth gig as a nice day out.

I've just watched that video. I don't know if I should laugh or cry. I'm doing a bit of both. If he is on this forum and reading this, please don't act like that again!

It is precisely this sort of conduct that puts me off going to galas and on railtours, even though I'd very much like it. When I have been, it has been populated with rude anti-social types, desperate to push to *their* spot on the train or platform and God help anyone else who wants that bit of space.

So, please everyone, reassure me it isn't that bad everywhere. At the Ecclesbourne a few weeks ago it was very pleasant, but the SVR and GCR seem to be the worst for such problems.

I've seen it on the East Lancs close up. Was sat at a table with my ex and some friends and some head case climbed on the table between us and hung half his body out of the window, started flailing and wailing like some kind of lunatic. I've been on trains full of footy fans (Including myself) that are far better behaved.

I ended up pointing to and giving a well known hand gesture to a couple of lads at the SVR last year that were flailing like a pair of morons and to be fair they did calm down a bit.
The trouble is it only takes a couple of them for it to get irritating. If I have a little look out of the window I want to see and hear the loco working. But a couple of people flapping their arms about means that you generally start to just notice them.
It's a bit like being at a cinema when someone can't stop talking. If anyone on here does either of these things, you need to realise that I didn't pay my hard earned money to come and see or hear you. You are Not adding to the experience...

On the whole I've found the galas at the SVR to be fairly alright without too many idiots.
Although it can be pretty busy and it's sometimes difficult to get near the front.
Sometimes the best way to do that is to miss a train at one end of the line, have a cuppa and then get a decent seat before the next train arrives packed to the rafters and everyone charges to get on the train you're already on.
That way you get a nice relaxing table with your friends, get the window open and enjoy the noise and the scenery :)

Whats the purpose of him waving his arms round in such a manor?
Clearly he thinks he's conducting an imaginary orchestra on the lineside, albeit badly.

Why would someone be carrying a gas mask with them to a event like this and why would he be wearing one? I'm genuinely intrigued.

I was window hanging the front window behind a class 50 saturday with clag in my face and defening thrash through sharpthorne tunnel - it was a legendary experience. I'd say its a necessary experience once in a while ;)

(I dont do that flailing noncence however)
