Hi all,

I would like to travel on loco-hauled trains on the national network (not specialist charter trains). I intend to visit the Cumbrian Coast this Summer- does anyone know how I can find out in advance which services are loco-hauled?

Also, I swear in passing through I saw a loco-hauled train at London Liverpool Street? Was I mistaken?

Thanks!

Keep an eye out here.

Not mistaken at all, many loco hauled services can be seen/travelled on there, hauled by Class 90's.

You can also travel on loco hauled with Chiltern in the form of Class 68's, and Transpennine will also be using Class 68's in the future. Scotrail also have a small number of Class 68 hauled diagrams as well.

There are also the Anglia 37s on Great Yarmouth services; Class 91s on the East Coast Main Line; Class 67s hauling a few North Wales-Cardiff and North Wales-Manchester services; and Class 57s on summer saturday services in Cornwall. Of course then there's the sleeper services too.

Do you know which services they are generally used on? To which destinations?
Almost all services from Liverpool Street [LST] - Norwich [NRW] and vice-versa.

Exceptions include the 1702 LST-NRW stopping service and the 1930 NRW-LST return working, which is formed of 12x321 EMU

I highly recommend going to Norwich and then on from there on the 37-hauled service to Great Yarmouth if you're into loco haulage.
Agreed, though you'll need to be quick, as it may not be around for long.

I highly recommend going to Norwich and then on from there on the 37-hauled service to Great Yarmouth if you're into loco haulage.

I had a trip a on April 4th with an Anglia Plus Day Ranger. I set off from Ely at 10.32. Then from Stowmarket with a class 90, top and tail 37s to and from Great Yarmouth, and then top and tail 68s to Lowestoft.

Code:
Stowmarket d11:55 a12:27 Norwich [URL="http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G01288/2017/04/04/advanced"]http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G01288/2017/04/04/advanced[/URL]
Norwich d12:36 a13:10 Gt Yarmouth [URL="http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G03300/2017/04/06/advanced"]http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G03300/2017/04/06/advanced[/URL]
Gt Yarmouth d13:17 a13:52 Norwich [URL="http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G03302/2017/04/04/advanced"]http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G03302/2017/04/04/advanced[/URL]
Norwich d14:05 a14:49 Lowestoft [URL="http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G02627/2017/04/04/advanced"]http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G02627/2017/04/04/advanced[/URL]

I then went from Lowestoft to Ipswich, to Felixstowe and back, from Ipswich to Norwich then to Sheringham and back. When I came into Norwich again about 9pm, there was a London train with the class 90, the trains with the two 37s, two 68s and also a class 57 in the station, all at the same time.

No, the DMU it's covering for is due back from repair.

The 68 diagram will also vanish when the new stock for Anglia is delivered in a couple of years from now.

Isn't is the 68 diagram which is covering for that 170 with the 37s being more long-term, until the new stock arrives?

From the gen on the Short Hauled Set facebook page, 68s are rumoured to be sticking around till end of summer timetable, with the 37s sticking around till 2019. 68s are covering for 170 204, but there is also a 170 off for refurb at the same time. 37s are covering the lack of units in general I understand.

Well... it's one or the other; either way both loco hauled diagrams will have vanished in two years...

This strikes me very much as not wishing to accept you're wrong! It doesn't hurt to be wrong :P

Also, seen a rumour online that the 68s may be here till December to cover the Leaf Fall season known as Autumn.

More a question of me being not too bothered about the 68 diagram vanishing since they'll be around for a lot of years yet and will shortly be available in quantity on the Trans-Pennine route... ;)

Having said that, I do need at least three of the 37/4s that get rotated on to the Norwich diagram, so I had better not hang around either...

What's the current likelihood of getting a 37 on any given weekday/weekend at the moment?

You have 2x 37s working between Carlisle along the Cumbrian Coast, which I believe work Mondays to Saturdays

The Anglia 37s at the moment are Monday to Friday, with the set coming out to play during summer saturdays

Also, if Norwich are at home the 37s tend to come out to play in the afternoon between Norwich and Great Yarmouth.

Although the Freightmaster site may not seem to be the obvious choice all loco hauled passenger trains are also listed in the many freight timetables published, and someone on the forum keeps a permenant updated list as well. You do however have to pay to join the site.

An easy way to get a decent run behind both GA loco hauled sets is:

14:55 Norwich to Lowestoft (37)
15:48 Lowestoft to Brundall (37)
You can risk a tight connection at Brundall Gardens by a following DMU, can't quite remember if Brundall has a pub on its doorstep
16:50 Brundall to Great Yarmouth (68)
17:17 Great Yarmouth to Norwich (68)

Then 18:00 Norwich - Liverpool Street behind a 90

I believe GA do cheap advance tickets to Norwich, other than that splitting at Manningtree can save some money depending where you are coming from

Sadly, my loco-hauled extravaganza today was scuppered by a 37 breaking down not far out of Carlisle. I'll obviously need to come back again, but I'd rather get the run from Preston without taking another day off if at all possible. So, which 37 diagrams (if any) run on bank holiday Mondays (specifically the late May one)?

Ermmm not entirely sure there. From RTT it appears that it's a normal service on 29 May BH monday...

Wouldn't rely on that though

If you get a ticket to Ipswich, then you can use an Anglia Plus Day Ranger (£18.20) and then you can go pretty much wherever you like in East Anglia (not the Cross Country trains from Norwich to Ely).

A single from Lowestoft to Great Yarmouth is £14 on its own.
