Salary: £33-37k plus London Allowance
Location: Bounds Green Depot
Level: Depot - Semi Skilled
Deadline: 04/05/2017 23:59
Hours: 35
Benefits: Excellent package including final salary pension scheme and travel concessions
Job Type: Full Time
We are Virgin! In January 2014 we started a joint venture between Stagecoach and the Virgin Group as the shortlisted bidders for the new InterCity East Coast franchise. In November 2014, the eight-year franchise was awarded to the Stagecoach/Virgin joint venture company and commenced operating on 1 March 2015 trading as Virgin Trains East Coast.

We have invested in brand new trains and technology; 2018 will see the introduction of our brand new Azuma trains. Azuma is coming with more seats, more leg room, faster Wi-Fi, on board entertainment and faster journey times.

What do we have on offer??

We are looking for shunters to join the Virgin Trains East Coast team at our Bounds Green Maintenance Depot, near Alexandra Palace, North London.

As we eagerly await the introduction of our brand new fleet of Azuma trains next year, there couldn’t be a better time to join the team! Shunters form a crucial part of the depot’s overall performance and you will be joining the business at a very exciting time. You will be working a four-shift pattern, covering 24/7 duties.

Employee benefits currently include free Virgin Trains East Coast travel and a range of other discounts and offers, as well as a competitive pension scheme.

What will you do??

You will be working on our existing fleet, helping to marshal the vehicles for maintenance, or re-form them ready for service. You will also become familiar with the operation of the signalling panels, liaising with King’s Cross signal box, as well as operating Ferme Park servicing sidings where vehicles are also fuelled.

The Essentials

Knowledge of Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Standards & Compliance

Knowledge of traction and rolling stock systems

Experience of a railway operational environment

What do we need you to be?

You'll need to be motivated, hard working and an effective problem solver.

We also need you to be:

A team player

Able to use your own initiative

Safety conscious

Have great attention to detail

A clear and confident communicator

Used to a physically demanding role that involves working outdoors

Customer focussed

This is a safety critical role, so you’ll also need to pass a strict medical screening to qualify for this role.

If this sounds like you, apply now and let us know why you should be given this amazing opportunity to become one of our team. Brilliant people only please!!

Hello, does anyone know if it's common to move up from shunter to become a mainline driver with Virgin trains?

Is there a difference between a shunter and a depot driver?

In this case yes; operating shunting panels at Bounds Green and Ferme Park and liaising with drivers and depot staff; route setting and so forth. It's actually quite similar to a signaller. At VTEC; there are no depot drivers AFAIK; all driving is done by mainline drivers.

I've been invited to an assesment day for this in a few weeks...I've got. A few questions. I understand I have to sit a group bourdon test..does anyone know if Virgin use the "dots" texts or the shapes test (like TfL)? Also I've failed the bourdon once before for a trainee driver position..if I was to fail this again would that be it for my hopes of driving? Cheers for your help

You will be sitting the Rules Acquisition Aptitude Test (RAAT) and Safe Concentration & Attention Test (SCAAT).

This is what it states in my email.

There is no driving element to these jobs. Old fashioned shunting. Pulling points, physically coupling railway vehicles together, etc. Outdoors in all weathers, getting dirty, physical work.

If successful with the above, you maybe invited
to take a Safety interview at the OPC in Watford.

Good luck

Shifts are 0700/1900 and 1900/0700. Bear in mind that for commuting purposes. And next Year at some point you will transfer to Hitachi when they take over the depot

So if you're planning on using staff rate rail travel to get to work, ask lots of questions at interview about what your entitlements will be after the change over.

Anyone else been to the assessment? I've been invited for the interview..had to change date though as it was too short notice to get a swap or day off.

Hey guys!!

I passed the assessment and I have an interview in just under 2 weeks. The assessment isn't that bad really, as long as you practice the with the materials they provide you with! ☺️☺️☺️

At a guess you'll probably start on 33k whilst training and on probation and move up to 37k once you've passed out.
