Hallo everyone. I'm David.

I've been a member of the forum since 2009 but have rarely posted, although I am a regular reader of the forums. My lack of direct participation is for multiple reasons : endless difficulties in logging in, crap IT, plus - as an amateur enthusiast - I am never quite sure how much value I can bring to the threads.

But I love the forum and want to pay tribute to the incredible knowledge and expertise here. I now have a shiny new laptop so hopefully - with a bit more confidence - I will be a bit more active in the future.

Unlike many I was not an enthusiast as a kid, but it slowly developed during my adult years, particularly when I became a Southeastern Sidcup line commuter in the early 1990s. I remain fascinated by the Dartford lines and re-wrote some of their Wikipedia entries a couple of years ago (hopefully improving them).

I have been a subscriber to Modern Railways since the early 1990s and still find that (and Rail and Today's Rail UK) enjoyable reading. I love combative writing and am a great fan of Roger Ford and Ian Walmsley !

I have recently began to take an interest in the preserved / heritage scene although modern rail remains my main interest.(Despite having lived on the south east London / Kent borders for over 20 years it was only a few months ago that I made my first trip on the Spa Valley, my "local" preserved line - although I have been a fan of the Epping & Ongar since it opened (I originally came from Central Line territory - Loughton in Essex).

I love reading about railways and have built up quite a big library. Visits to Robert Humm's shop are lethal and I usually come away much poorer ... (Does anyone remember a secondhand rail bookshop in Charlotte Place near Tottenham Court Road ? I remember going there in the 90s and buying up back issues of Modern Railways).

Anyway there are a few more details :

Occupation : Civil servant (but not for much longer, voluntary redundancy at the end of next month).

Favourite Lines : The three Dartford lines, East Coast Main Line, Barking to Gospel Oak (for 6 months in 1992 I lived next to it in Walthamstow), the GN & GE Joint line.

Favourite Rolling Stock I have a soft spot for 465/466 'Networkers' despite their many drawbacks, Class 357s, any DMU.

Despite being predominantly a fan of the modern scene, I am increasingly interested in rail history. So much so that I have recently enrolled in a Postgraduate Diploma in Railway History run my the university where I graduated in History in the 80s (York). Hopefully this will keep my busy when my 30 Civil Service career ends ....

That's all for now.

3rd time lucky with this post...:D

Hi all

Just registered so thought I would introduce myself.

I have registered as I work for a Major IT Consultancy and we are currently doing a Proof of concept for a new fare payment phone app, so thought I may get some useful train information from the forums.

Unfortunately since the project is in its early stages most of what we are doing is commercially sensitive at present. But hopefully as time goes by I may have more freedom to discuss things more openly.

I am learning quite a lot about railways as this is my first project in the area.

Thanks

Hello forum,

My name is Kris,

I'm despatch staff at Govia Traducement Railway in South London / Surrey..

I've been a long time lurker reading the forum for years and thought it was about time I created an account and joined in with the discussion.
My interests include; the railway (of course), following a certain green and white football team ??????, learning Deutsch und Nederlands...

I didn't join to get too overly vocal about the whole DOO despute here but I will say I'm completely against these profiteering tory plans and I'm in complete solidarity with our conductors.

Unity is strength! :)

Second post.

Hi,

I am Martin of Lost Property software and cloud services throughout the UK and Europe including the Nordics.
We currently service airports and railways including some bus routes.

Hoping that one day we can revolutionise the way the country sees lost property for the painful thing it is to most people.
We have created the only “ecosystem” that actually works, one system for all businesses so when you search our system you actually search ALL our partners databases.
FREE to search and FREE to register found items! Free now and forever! That there is a promise.

Happy to answer your queries where I can. Thanks for accepting my registration. After 18 years worth of railway experience I hope I can answer most things by now.

Sorry to hear you losing your job and being forced to take VES, are you in one of the offices affected by BOF ?

I am a Civil Servant of only 28 years and I am lucky NOT to be affected by BOF as I can commute to my office in Liverpool.

Good evening ladies and gents.
I've only just found this forum and what I've seen so far it seems to be the best place for any help required. I thought I would just say hello to everyone and get a feel on how everything works around here.

HI r37. I think this forum covers every aspect of the railway, I'm slowly getting to grips with it but I'm sure people will offer the help if we get stuck.

Hey spikey. It was just generally saying if help was needed then I'm sure people would come forward. Since then I have started another thread regarding interview pointers for a trainee driver role for southwest, not sure if you know anything?

Hello!

I've been on various forums and usenet groups and I have been lurking here for a while. I decided to register so I can ask questions. I loved railways as a child and that love was sparked again when I commuted to Gloucester and back for three years for college.

So, um, hi :)

Just saying hi.
Barney Fisher. 45-year old American guy based in Wilmington DE (Delaware).
Just looking around for a week or so before my next post.
I think of myself as a novice rail fan. The interest and fascination is there but not the knowledge.
Wondering why your main line trains seem so narrow. I did London to Manchester a couple of years ago but spent a lot of that vacation in London.
I was thinking Richard Branson couldn't fit his ego on one of his Pendolinos but not sure how that would go down.
See you later guys. :):):)

Hi, and welcome to the forum, as nobody has yet answered your question about narrow mainline trains I thought I should explain that the Pendolino (and Super Voyager trains) operated by Virgin out of London Euston to the likes of Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Chester etc. are narrower than a more conventional High Speed Train such as those which operate out of Paddington to the West of England as they are tilting trains and due to the limited loading gauge in the UK thus require a bodyside profile to allow this function.

Dear all Railuk Forum Members,
Hello, I am Jonathan let me say hello to all of us.
Today is my 20th birthday, I choose this day because I want to receive birthday wishes from all of us.
I am 20 years old as stated(!) and I am from Hong Kong. Now at Lincoln doing Mechanical engineering.
I am interested in quite a lot of things, including Aviation, buses, trains(Railway). I hope joining here can let me know more about railway( and all sort of stuff!) and I also tries to use this website to see if there are engineers out there.
My dad used to work on the old airport in Hong Kong to fix planes, I got an old album about planes there.

I am also interested, when do this website start and who started it? I seemed cannot find those info. Can anyone answer me that?
I will also make some little guessing game for all of us as a gift.
Jonathan x.
