:? Don't think that any advance tickets (for all or part of the route) are available yet, as it's more than 12 weeks until 25th July, but if you are going there and back on the same day and want some flexibility on what trains you catch, then an Off Peak Day Return ticket from Birmingham New Street to Nottingham is available at £13-20, and then you'll need an onward Off Peak Day Return ticket from Nottingham to Alfreton which will cost another £7-40. Total £20-60.

Or you could get an Off Peak Day Return from Birmingham New Street to Derby, cost = £11-70, and then a Derbyshire Wayfarer at £8-30, which would be valid from Derby to Alfreton via Chesterfield. Total £20-00.

Alternatively, a through off peak return ticket from Birmingham New Street to Alfreton would cost you £28-00, but would give you the additional flexibility of being able to travel both via Chesterfield and/or Nottingham.

The quickest route is to go by train to Drby and then bus to Butterley - it is not worth getting to Alfreton by train as you will still need to catch a bus from there and to get there at the same time as the journey below you would need to start an hour earlier and it would cost you quite a bit more

I don't know if two singles would be cheaper, but the Trent Barton ZigZag day ticket is valid for your bus journeys and costs just £4.60

I think you should use a Derbyshire Wayfarer. This is a day rover ticket allowing virtually unlimited bus and train travel throughout Derbyshire. An Adult Derbyshire Wayfarer costs £8.30 and is a scratch-off card available by post from the Public Transport Unit, Derbyshire County Council, County Hall, Matlock DE4 3AG.

For your journey, this ticket is valid by train between Burton-on-Trent and Alfreton via Chesterfield. If you prefer to travel via Nottingham, there is a more expensive Wayfarer at £10.70 sold at Nottingham station and valid from there, but it is not clear from the wording on http://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/transp...rover_tickets/derbyshire_wayfarer/default.asp whether that ticket can be bought by post in advance. I would recommend the cheaper ticket via Chesterfield for you.

From Alfreton, the Wayfarer ticket is also valid on buses 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 and 140 which run between Alfreton railway station and the Midland Railway Centre near Butterly.

You also need an Off Peak Day Return between Birmingham and Burton-on-Trent which costs £8.70. That gives a total cost of £17.

For this combination of tickets, you must choose trains which stop at Burton-on-Trent. If this restriction is inconvenient, you could buy an Off Peak Day Return between Birmingham and Derby at £11.70 instead. All relevant trains stop at Derby, so this combination lets you travel on any train via Chesterfield at an additional cost of £3, total £20.

 Even cheaper would be just to buy a rail ticket from Birmingham New Street to/from Burton on Trent (£8-70) and then purchase/use a Zig-Zag ticket from there onwards (£4-60); however isn't this meant to be a Rail forum?

But then you'd have to get a bus from Burton to Derby, I don't think all trains stop at Burton & it takes longer from Burton to Derby than by train (although it is quite a long walk from Derby railway station to the bus station/stop)

But it is difficult to get toi Butterley without using a bus.

It is quicker to get a bus from Derby than travel to Alfreton and get a bus.
