Hello everyone,

Tomorrow I'm going Edinburgh > Lockerbie and I want to avoid the bus replacement service by Going Edinburgh > Glasgow Central/Queen Street > Lockerbie.

My question is this, can I travel that route on a £19.40 Edinburgh > Lockerbie Anytime ticket? The lady at the Edinburgh ticket office said that there was no problem doing that, but I don't trust her.

The cost of individual tickets is almost £40 (Single) and I really don't want to be hit with that on top of the £20ish single out of Edinburgh.

Also, why is it so expensive to go Edinburgh > Carlisle compared to a Edinburgh> Lockerbie +Lockerbie > Carlisle ticket? The system is broken!

Yes.

Edinburgh Group is a Routeing Point.
The Routeing Points for Lockerbie are Carlisle and Carstairs.
Carlisle fails the Fares Check, so we have to use Edinburgh Group and Carstairs.
The only valid map for this journey is map EG.
Map EG shows that travel via Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central is permitted.
Travel from Edinburgh to Glasgow Central then from there to Lockerbie would involve doubling back through Newton, so that is not permitted unless there is a relevant Easement.
A quick search through the list of Easements finds lots of Newtons, but none of them are Newton (Lanarks), so I don't think there is a relevant Easement.

In summary, you can travel Edinburgh - Falkirk - Glasgow - Lockerbie with an Edinburgh - Lockerbie ticket.

 Very interesting, as the National Rail journey planner certainly doesn't seem to like that!

By the way, is the £19-40 ticket price that Ross quotes a first class anytime single?

Agreed. But as Yorkie has pointed out, the different online journey planners use different approximations of the Routeing Guide.

This leads to inconsistencies and errors. For example, the NXEC site will sell a ticket for Musselburgh to Lockerbie via Glasgow Queen Street but not for Edinburgh to Lockerbie via Glasgow Queen Street, even thought the same Routeing Points and Maps are used for both journeys. But there are no First Class fares from Musselburgh to Lockerbie.

It even treats the four members of Edinburgh Group for Routeing purposes in different ways. From Dalmeny, Edinburgh (Waverley) and Haymarket, it won't sell a ticket to Lockerbie via Glasgow Queen Street. From South Gyle it sells a First Class Anytime Day Single (FDS) at £19.40, change at Haymarket, Glasgow Queen Street and Glasgow Central.

is the £19-40 ticket price that Ross quotes a first class anytime single?

First Class Anytime Day Single (FDS) route Any Permitted.

;) If he gets challenged, it will be interesting Ross explaining to a gripper that John off the internet said that travelling via Falkirk and Glasgow was o.k.

P.S. If Ross decides to get the rail replacement bus, I wonder what the difference in service is between a first class and standard class ticket?!

That would be a daft thing to say. But if he gave the explanation John gave, the desperate gripper would probably realise they are out of their depth and give up.

In my experience of replacement buses the usual cost is £0.00.

It's not unreasonable in my opinion. There's only a few trains between Edinburgh and Lockerbie normally anyway. It seems perfectly valid to me, and you shouldn't get any hastle. Quite often, it can be quicker to go via Glasgow because of the low service frequency from both stations. You shouldn't have a problem. And if you do, you've got the routeing guide behind you!

Just to confirm, John, I cannot find an easement allowing travel to Glasgow Central as this involves doubling back as you say. A cross-Glasgow transfer is perfectly acceptable.

Not a single problem. Thanks!

So a new question now for going back on Monday morning. Can I take a 08:10 (or thereabouts) train to Glasgow, break my journey in Glasgow for a little bit and then head on over to Edinburgh a few hours later on my Lockerbie to Edinburgh ticket? Or would I *have* to take the direct TPE service from Lockerbie that departs a few minutes after the Glasgow one?

Also, why does the National Rail website suggest that I'll need separate tickets to go via Queen Street?!

Yes you can break your journey, and yes via Glasgow is a permitted route.

You can always break your journey on the return portion of an Off Peak ticket. You can usually break your outward journey (in this case you can). As this is your RTN portion there is no issue anyway.

NRES is wrong, which is not uncommon!
