You can certainly get them from the ticket office at Leeds station. I buy several each year.

Page H2 of the last National Fares Manual (NFM 99) said:
Platform Tickets (where available) £0·10

But Leeds has been charging twice this for several years.

They're available, but I spent the better part of 5 mins arguing at Waterloo to get one, ticket seller refused to believe it existed.

Merseyrail sell them - 10p a ticket, but retailers are reluctant to sell them,

1) Because very few people ask for them, so probably the first time they've been asked.
2) Because they represent an opportunity for fare evasion. (Although somebody caught with one travelling won't be PF'd - they'll be PACED and prosecuted for blatant fare evasion).
3) Because they don't work automatic barriers.
4) Queues are big enough with people trying to purchase normal tickets.
5) There is no real reason to be on the platform unless helping somebody- and in which case, barrier staff allow you through anyway. Train 'enthusiasts' can find a 507/508 somewhere that doesn't have barriers and a less crowded station.

But the ones sold by Merseyrail may also work the Leeds automatic barriers!

Leeds ticket barriers are probably in 'accept all' mode, which means absolutely anything that resembles a ticket will open it up...

I wonder does that explain why an London underground travelcard priv will open the national rail gates at London Bridge. I tried it once (can't remember the exact reason why I did try it) but imagine my shock when the gates opened for an invaild ticket.
Wonder if the gates at waterloo are the same?

I am not sure if I've misunderstood you, but a Priv travelcard is valid on National Rail services from London Bridge.

Now I would like to make the point I had a valid ticket on the national rail services concerned and wasn't using the lul ticket to fare evade.

Going back to lul privs, at the time it was marked "valid lul / DLR only". Now they are marked "valid TfL rail only". So a 2nd question is that valid on tramlink?

Priv holders are entitled to free travel on Tramlink regardless of whether you hold a Travelcard. If you've a Priv Travelcard (z1-6) then it's valid on Rail, LO, LU and DLR within the zones. It's not valid on buses but I've never had a problem. I remember it being marked LUL / DLR only pre-LO and never, ever had a problem, even travelling on the notorious Heathrow Connect.
