Sheffield-Carlisle Off Peak return is £50.20 (Valid Anytime)
This is valid via S&C or via Newcastle (and possibly via Preston)
Splitting at York/Newcastle doesn't reduce the figure.
If you can go via the S&C both ways, you can split at Leeds
Sheffield-Leeds (Route Not Doncaster) £11.20 (or £8.80 after 0930)
Leeds-Carlisle (Route Appleby) £27.80
Total = £39 or £36.60
Freedom of North East 4 in 8 days is £75, only £24.80 more than Sheffield-Carlisle, and is valid after 0845 and is worth getting if you are planning more trips in the area within 8 days. At £18.75 per day it's good value if so.

If you can decide well in advance the day and time you are travelling and don't mind Advance Purchase Tickets the lowest you can get each way is Sheffield-Preston £6.50 and Preston-Carlisle £4. You would have to allow a plenty of time at Preston in case of any delays because if you miss your connection with split tickets they wouldn't be valid.
This journey from Sheffield to Carlisle highlights the problem when TOC's like Northern, who operate some quite long journeys between major cities, do not offer Advance Purchase Tickets. If you want to do these journeys at a very low price you have to go roundabout routes using other TOCs with the inconvenience of purchasing split tickets and the danger of missed connections. As I have said on previous threads this is the problem for other journeys using Northern including Nottingham-Leeds, Nottingham-Carlisle and all journeys from Lincoln to the north via Sheffield.

I think ashworth has presented a debatable issue as fact, I think a more sensible point would have been you may have problems convincing a TOC to provide you with onward transport with split tickets from different operators.
Perhaps I did word this as an absolute fact!
However, I have always been led to believe that if you miss your booked train with an AP ticket then your ticket is not valid by any other service and you have to buy a new ticket at full price. I know that isn't the case when you are using a connecting service as part of a through AP ticket, but I have always been told that it is the case if you buy split AP tickets with different TOC's for a longer journey. I also thought that it was the case with any connecting services that are not part of your AP ticket.
For example whenever I travel from Mansfield to London I always buy AP tickets to and from Nottingham to London and then purchase my Mansfield-Nottingham ticket seperately on the day of travel. I then always get the train from Mansfield half an hour previous to the one I really need just in case of any late running or cancellations. This is because I have always been told that as I don't have a through ticket from Mansfield I cannot be certain that my AP ticket will be accepted on a later service.

I think so. It's not documented anywhere so as far as I can see it's made up!
As I have quoted many, many times, the NCoC states clearly that you can combine multiple tickets for "one journey".
The main part of the argument that you lose your connectional rights is that you are making multiple journeys - this is at odds with NCoC.
I'm not saying some railway staff won't try it on - of course some will - but they don't ever quote from the NCoC to back up their claim and instead issue a load of drivel that contradicts the NCoC.
This debate has been discussed at length previously, a search should reveal some of the previous discussions on the subject.
