A deal has been reached to resolve Australian cricket's protracted pay dispute, paving the way for the nation's professional players to be re-contracted and for this month's scheduled Test tour to Bangladesh to proceed as planned.

The in-principle agreement was signed after a final round of face-to-face negotiations between Cricket Australia Chief Executive James Sutherland and his Australian Cricket Association counterpart Alistair Nicholson in Melbourne this morning.

A pity that some play on day three of the Test Match was lost to the inclement weather in the final session. Today (day four) seems to offer a chance of a full day's play, but the forecast for Tuesday (day five) is not good at all.

Incidentally, the BBC TV "red button" Cricket section seems to suddenly have decided to make no mention of the scores of this Test Match. I wonder why?

Yorkshire crushed by Essex inside two days at Scarborough, with the hosts 25-5 in the first innings and 37-6 in the second.
Mohammed Amir finished with career-best figures of 10 wickets for the loss of only 72 runs, and Essex's lead at the top of the Championship is 46 points.

Fortunately, there was no need for a fifth day in the Test Match as South Africa from being in a good position of 163-3, succumbed to 202 all out and England won by 177 runs.

Moeen........19.5 - 1 - 69 - 5
Anderson.......14 - 7 - 16 - 3

A fifer for Moeen and well deserved MOTM and Series.

A very nice test to watch - four good days in the stands and not often you get to see 40 wickets over the course of a test (no declarations or draw).

Standards of behaviour/etiquette are slipping - too many people moving during an over, and many people (me included) refusing to stand to let people pass during play.

Thought someone, maybe you, would be interested to know that Ryan Sidebottom, in his final season for Yorkshire before retirement, not only managed to take part in this match but simultaneously turned out at Lords in the Warwickshire cause, taking 4 wickets in Middlesex's first innings! I thought some diabolical mistake had been made by the scorers, but, apparently, an Australian-born guy by the name of Ryan Sidebottom made his County Championship debut yesterday for Warwicks. Let's hope the Aussies don't discover a Joe Root.

Hameed of Lancashire had reached 77 not out in the second innings of the match against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl, but rain washed out all the remainder of the match. Perhaps a century would have gone some way to help restore some confidence in him.

His best innings this season, I think? Unfortunately, the 6 he scored in the first innings does him no credit and will not further his case with the selectors.

He doesn't seem to have recovered from the injury he picked up in India and the knock he got in April.

Well, the ECB have dropped Keaton Jennings and Liam Dawson and replaced them with Mark Stoneman and Mason Crane, Chris Woakes comes in for Steven Finn.

Should the ECB have not picked Jennings and Dawson for the South Africa series?

Dawson never deserved to be picked - Jennings should have been dropped after the second test imo. I don't understand why some good judges think that having an incorrect technique (which they all agree on) would be solved by batting him at no. 3 instead! Temperament is not everything.

Stoneman is another Durham man (although exiled to Surrey) and seems to be next cab on the rank as both Jennings and Hammed are out of sorts.

I also note we are trying another spinner. I thought Dawson was the best spinner in the country..................

Can't understand why they've gone for Mason Crane. England don't usually play leg-spinner as they are rarely a threat. I don't recall Ian Salisbury, Chris Schofield, Scott Borthwick or Adil Rashid ever ripping through a side. Since Crane had a spell playing in Australia in the winter, I've been keeping an eye on his figures - he doesn't take many wickets, and he's expensive. I would have thought that Briggs would have been further up the queue than Dawson or Crane.

day/night test, pink ball - worlds gone mad.

Playing it in England up to 9.30 p.m is certainly daft. Even in that glorious summer of 1976 the weather had deteriorated badly by late August. Still, it may mean that whoever bats first doesn't automatically win! The last Test that W.Indies won was at Edgbaston, back at the turn of the century, so this may give them hope: actually they have two Hopes, brothers by the name of Hope, one of whom scored freely in the county matches, if one or other is picked. I suspect their pace bowling may be their strongest suit against our brittle top-order batting, but we shall see. It's a shame that this is really a Second XI, but who can blame players able to make a fortune from the IPL and, to a lesser extent, other T20 competitions, when the pay on offer for the Tests is only 10-15% of what the next Australian test team will earn? Something rotten at the heart of cricket.

I'm off to Edgbaston tomorrow for the second day, have very mixed feelings about it, it wasn't my choice but we'll give it a go. Will probably need to pack some warm clothes! At least there is a through train from New Street back to Bangor after close of play!

Varun Chopra has decided he doesn't fancy much running for Essex in the T20 Blast against Kent at Chelmsford.
He's clubbed 84 off 37 balls so far, with seven 6s and five 4s. The fifth over went 6-6-6-4-4-4.

Way to go to emulate Lyth's 161 off 73 for Yorkshire tonight! Hope Chopra doesn't as Kent are on the receiving end. Lyth might be reminding the England selectors of his availability as Cook's opening partner.

Kent had already scored a record opening partnership of 207, with Joe Dernly scoring 127 off 66 balls.
Chopra gets to the ton from 52 deliveries.

Cracking start by Cook/Root in the first Day/Nighter. Shame about Stoneman.

What were the Windies doing not taking the new ball?

That's Lancashire out of the T20 for another year. Quite the finish in the end, with a cracking batting collapse worthy of an England test side from Brum Bears.

One bright point in the whole escapade was our failure to beat Brum means that Yorkshire also failed to make the finals. Shame. :)

Easy test match win for England.

Notable this evening for Stuart Broad passing Ian Botham go into 2nd for test wickets taken for England.
