I assume you mean post 14? I has read it and I disagree with you that it's too much effort, but we clearly have different opinions on the matter
We'll see if you still have the same opinion after you have had your pocket picked...

Go on, I'll bite. I'm not suggesting that you don't store things safely, just that getting them out when needed isn't a big hassle. You have to produce your priv card when buying a ticket, when requested on the train or at a barrier. Do you refuse because it might get stolen?

And please don't make assumptions about whether I have been a victim of crime or not.

Looking at the thread title again, I have no problem with showing it when travelling (although I can't remember being asked to) and obviously I show it when buying a ticket. The point is that in those situations you are (relatively) in control of the situation.

At a station barrier when you are in a crowd off a busy arrival, wrapped up for the cold outside and juggling your luggage then you can do without having anything else in your hand beyond the ticket itself. Most crime prevention advice says keep valuables secure, which means as far away from pickpocket access as practicable.

And I didn't assume you had been the victim of a crime, I said we'll see if you change your mind after you have been. Being burgled a few decades ago certainly changed my habits.

I had something like that once when a conductor announced loudly to us (to be heard by all the other people in the coach) that as we were staff we were forbidden to take anything other than soft drinks or tea or coffee. The fact that we had already declined all the food offered by the catering staff seemed to have passed him by. A friend who was a very senior person in the same TOC said we should have made a formal complaint about it...

Had that once on East Coast, when travelling with some other forum members. The fact that I was actually on public rate Advance tickets obviously passed her by (my PRIV wallet was open, as I'd kept my tickets in there).

On the subject of showing PRIV passes, I don't tend to pay much attention to them when checking tickets - but on the whole find that most who have them will already have them on display. Dependants tend to be the worst for not having them out, but will nearly always happily show them if requested.

I have never been asked to show my priv card, probably because I always present it with my ticket. I feel it is a common cutesy to staff not to make their job any more difficult than necessary, they shouldn't need to ask.

I agree with this - and at the ticket office I have a large supply of three-window National Rail ticket wallets which are designed to make showing a photocard, discount card and ticket visible at the same time. Should be available nationwide so no need for it to be an issue!

Some of the catering staff on that line are really aggressive. A few years back I had a All Line Rover at the full public rate and had been served. Another member of catering staff spotted my Priv and had a go at me for taking the food before taking it back.

Another time I had to pass an inquisition, being asked four times if I was sure I was meant to be in First Class, then being required to show my ticket before I was allowed to sit down.

Also had one on EMT where the member of catering staff simply walked past and never served me. When I mentioned this to the TM, the TM said that I'd better not show her colleague any attitude! I almost apologised for having the audacity for being a paying customer.

This kind of service certainly isn't worth paying anything extra for - still get your head bitten off if you get crap treatment and try politely to resolve it there and then!

I find the National Rail ticket wallets flimsy and your priv can easily get bent and crumpled so I do not keep my priv in them.

If presenting a ticket onboard a train, I would always present my PRIV and photo ID alongside. At the end of the day, if it was a normal railcard you'd have to present it, why would a PRIV be any different?

I purchased a fake leather ticket wallet off Amazon for around £5. Two years later after daily use it is still going strong. (And I store my PRIV, TOC card, photo ID, oyster card, gate pass and door pass in it.

I have a stock of the RMT ticket wallets with several windows, pity they stopped selling them on the member's site!

A good quality, Rail UK Forums-branded ticket wallet might not be a bad idea? I would certainly consider buying one...

When I used "boxes" to buy priv tickets I always used to show both the boxes and the photocard when my ticket was inspected - it just seemed like the right thing to do.

I got one from Amazon and it's fine except a lot of the tickets/passes is covered. Is yours like this and do you get asked to remove them?

The one I purchased was this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00H9DV9NI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I somehow manage to fit my various passes, oyster card, door card and tickets in there. It is a little snug though!

But if your pocket gets picked just after a station barrier line you have lost a hell of a lot of valuable stuff. Which is why something that full needs to be inside your clothes, with just your current paper ticket or Oyster card in your hand ... I thought it was a Very Bad Idea to have any kind of contactless bank card anywhere near your Oyster if you were hoping to use it...

You make a fair point. I am inclined to agree.

I have two ticket wallets, for the simple fact that my passes don't all fit in one.

Photocard, priv, season ticket in one, Oyster, staff pass and group travel pass in the other.

You only ever need to dig one out at any barrier, so would not be the end of the world if someone pinches it, but of course I remain vigilant at all times.

Wallet with money and cards never at any time out of the pocket in a busy public place.

I wouldn't ever store an Oyster / Bank Card together, mainly due to card clash.

No point separating all your cards, and then trying to guess the correct pocket when finding your priv... It isn't like anyone keeps their wallet in their pocket when paying at a shop for example, and I'd be a lot more concerned about losing my wallet.

I keep change and a contactless card outside my wallet, so in most cases I don't have to get the wallet out to pay in shops

If you use contactless a lot to pay, it might be worth considering a smartwatch. In addition to Samsung, Apple and Android Pay there are now watches from Garmin and Fitbit that offer mobile payments (and better battery life!).

The card is really no trouble at all to carry, and really I don't want Google, Samsung or Apple anywhere near my money if I can avoid it.

They merely provide tools for your bank to use a device to make payments.

I completely agree :D There is usually a very large collective groan whenever I mention it.
