What an interesting day that was!

go a train to Bristol TM, then tried to buy an Avon Day Rider, that was difficult! Two First Bus drivers had no idea what it was, and tried to sell me a WoE rider. He showed me the 4 pages on his ticket machine and wasn't there. Seeing that the machines were all the same I gave up and walked to the bus station to sort it out. On arrival I saw an Abus Citaro on the X8 so tried to get one on there, but it's the same machine and the Abus driver said that the Avon Rider is a Wessex only ticket!

I noticed though that the travel shop was actually open (it was about 08:30 in the morning so didn't think it would be open) and managed to get an Avon Day Rider there with ease.

Apart from red penning a lot of First Bus Vehicles, I managed to get CT Plus Dual door Dart SN53 EUD / DP1 which was operating the 506 Shuttle, as was a VW minibus in yellow BCT livery.
Later in the day, I noted a dual door Enviro200 was on the 506 Shuttle and then was later sighted on the 506.
I did a 506 spin from Broadmead to Days Road (by Turners Coachways yard) on CT Plus Enviro200 YX17 NRY, coming back on YX17 NSK.

Saw Abus Solo Y555 AJP was on the 672 all day, so decided to get the 14:25 672 from Broadmead to Temple Meads, though I wasn't sure if Temple Meads was a pick up only stop or not. Driver refused travel to Temple Meads though would accept Bedminster Parade so went there instead.
Still not sure what the Temple Meads stop is, as we went round Temple Circus Gyratory, then straight to the outside lane and went bombing down Temple Gate bypassing the bus stop completely. Even if you did want to flag it down there was no way it was stopping and was in the wrong lane to access the bus stop.

When I was at Temple Gate later on, I noticed the 672 passing on the 16:45 to Blagdon, and again sped down Temple Gate in the outside lane, maybe Temple Meads is no longer a stop, or maybe the driver assumes no one gets on there anyway?

Of the 38 First Bus vehicles I went on, I got refused to travel on the 24 as apparently my ticket was invalid as it had no scanning thing (to be honest I didn't know what he was on about) but was not letting me on despite me telling him that is how it was printed. I didn't argue as I was at the Old Market so I could get any bus to the City, and sure enough a moment later another service arrived and my ticket was accepted.

Interesting note as well, before the 24 arrived, I noticed a 48 came along but didn't go through the bus lane at Old Market, instead it went down the road behind the bus stop and stopped by some lamp post further down to let someone off, and carried on. I can only assume it was a later runner possibly, but can't think why didn't it set down the passenger at the registered bus stop, surely pulling into the bus lane can't add that much of a delay?

No other issues through the day, though doing some of these City - Temple Meads leaps were a drag, traffic was a nightmare! Even worst was trying to get back from Bedminster Parade to the City on the 76, the traffic queue was very slow

None of that is very encouraging to me!
I’m staying in Bristol for a few days in 2 weeks time. On the 4 days that I am going to be there I was intending to purchase either a Bristol Rider or an Avon Rider if I’m likely to be travelling further afield on any day. I couldn’t see the point in buying First Day tickets when for a similar price I could get multi operator tickets. However, looking at the bus routes in the area, First seem to almost have a monopoly in most areas I am likely to visit so perhaps it may not be worth the hassle of trying to purchase and use a multi operator ticket.

I had problems a few months ago in Manchester with First drivers refusing to accept my Greater Mmchester Wayfarer Ticket printed on rail ticket stock. I ended up having to get a leaflet from a G M Travel Centre to show the drivers that my ticket was valid. However, that doesn’t help if the driver doesn’t even know how to issue the ticket.

, the First Outer I bought in Bristol on Monday had a QR code on the bottom of it....caused much ticket studying to occur later in Bath when getting on the 265 with claims of it not being valid "not one of our tickets mate" despite text on the ticket clearly stating First Bristol Bath outer zone!

Just take a screenshot of the TravelWest website to prove that it is valid. Stand your ground - drivers need to understand that (sometimes) the customer is right! If you have any issues with First drivers, get them to radio the depot to confirm.

Clearly not all staff have been told about the ticketer roll out in Bristol which should be with them, I believe today?

I’m going to print it and carry a copy with me so that I can show any driver who tries to say it isn’t valid. However, that will not help me on the first bus I board each day if the driver can’t find it on the machine and doesn’t know how to sell one.

It is always good practice to take a copy :D Did the Cotswold Explorer in July and had no issues on Pulhams or Swanbrook but no Stagecoach drivers knew it. That and the leaflet is 4 years out of date! Of the five Stagecoach drivers (one Oxf, four West) - one didn't care less, two queried but seemed to be fine once I showed the leaflet (incl. one who said I should show the inspector should one appear). One was more confused but eventually relented whilst one I had to really stand my ground, though we joked about it when I got off. That said, it is an issue of training and awareness so I'm always diplomatic and try to be sympathetic.

I've not had a problem with an AvonRider except one Severnside driver who queried but seemed ok. However, got a £4 ticket off the P&R which didn't have a QR code. Almost every driver then queried why it didn't have one including one who asked why I'd torn it off :s Only later on did a Hengrove driver say "Oh, it's because it's off the Park and Ride".....

Happy travelling

I've had similar but with the Freedom Travelpass printed on rail ticket stock, only had one driver questioning it - luckily I had the Freedom Travelpass leaflet with me in which the driver asked if he could have a look at it, which he did and said yes its valid and then handed the leaflet back to us.

The AvonRider ticket prices are printed in First's A Guide To Your Fares on page 31 (from the guide dated 2nd April 2017), in which case they should be valid. I suspect First are trying to get everyone to purchase a FirstDay Bristol Inner Zone (or a Bath Inner Zone) instead.

Just to note I had no issues with drivers accepting its vadility in the area, I was refused on the basis there was no QR code so he kicked up a fuss. Telling said driver I've used it all day didn't wash either. Apparently the Avon Day Rider doesn't need a QR code, you wouldn't get one if you bought it on the A4 bus? I was going to argue this with the driver but judging by his broken english I guessed he wouldn't know what I was on about.

Sent a Facebook message to First about being kicked off a bus with a valid ticket, all I got was:

"Good Afternoon James, I am very sorry for the inconvenience caused. We are aware of the issues of the scanners and the QR codes, we are looking to resolve this as soon as we can. I apologise for this and I will pass all your comments over to the relevant teams. - LR"

But there wasn't a problem with the scanner or the QR code! The point is there wasn't a QR code on the ticket therefore was refused travel. I'm going to find another channel for a complaint. It might seem stupid as it was one bus and I got another one easily but I still think they should be made aware of this otherwise I could end up with the same driver again refusing to let me on!

Ashworth - messaged a First driver I know in Bath, apparently the Avon Day Rider is in the 'MultiRider' tab, which is different from the 'day' tab, so if the driver is going through the WoE and other First tickets, tell the driver to try the MultiRider tab, I shall try that next time.

Been in Bristol for a few days.

On Tuesday got an AvonRider with no problems. Driver on Number 8 in Clifton sold it me within seconds and knew exactly what it was and where to find it. Used it all day on First and once on Carmel 88A from Portishead to Clevedon and had no problems.

Not so lucky today Friday. Driver on the Number 8 in Clifton couldn’t find it on his machine. I don’t think he’d actually heard of it and tried twice to sell me a First West of England Ticket. He eventually let me ride free into Central Bristol so that I could buy one from the bus station. No better luck in the First Office at the bus station. Three people, including one who appeared to be the supervisor, tried to sell me one but couldn’t find it on the machine. They did seem to know what they were looking for and one of them said she regularly sells Bristol Riders and all the Riders had disappeared from the machine. That did seem to be the case, as I then asked an older, obviously experienced bus driver if he could find it. He said, no problems, he knew where they were, he’d sold one earlier in the week. They seemed to be correct in the travel office. All the Riders had disappeared from the machines today! The driver couldn’t understand where they had gone.

Used a First Bath and Bristol Day Ticket instead. This was a bit annoying as ended up with quite a walk at the end of my day when I couldn’t use the a Wessex Bus.

That does sound a bit weird that they had just vanished! I doubt it would have had anything to do with Ticketer being introduced, as that was done a good few weeks ago!

I just wondered if anyone has any further experience with trying to purchase Avon or Bristol Rider Tickets since my complete failure when nobody I asked at First in Bristol being able to find them on their machines on 24th November.

Could it be to do with the recent introduction of Ticketer being rolled out? This could explain as to why half of the ticket range seems to be missing.

I had one driver trying to flog us a First Day West Of England when I last went down to Brizzle. I only wanted a single into the centre.

I just couldn’t understand how I could be sold an AvonRider with no problems on a First Bus on Tuesday 20th November, then 3 days later on Friday 24th November, they couldn’t even find it on the machine at The First Travelshop at Bristol Bus Station. I also tried 2 drivers who also said it had disappeared from their machines.

Its still listed on the Travelwest website although the page its mentioned was last updated on 30 October '17.

I'd enquire with First as well as the West of England Combined Authority as it sounds strange that you could get the AvonRider on one day but yet a few days later you weren't. I still think that it'll be to do with the recent introduction of Ticketer being rolled out.

I Had a look at our machine yesterday while sat in Thornbury there are now 2 new tabs for ticket types one says Rider for Avonriders etc the other says Freedom for the Rail/bus freedom tickets.
