Hi,

I'm currently on board the Pendolino named City of Bangor - a city that is on the Virgin Trains network but can't be served by a Pendolino for obvious reasons. Got me thinking, how many other pieces of stock fall into this category?

All responses appreciated.

Thanks

Also the Pendolino 390141 called City of Chester, which also cannot be served by a Pendo.

I seem to recall on Anglia Railways post privatisation there was a class 86 loco called City of Glasgow.

Where's Union of South Africa? I've heard of South Africa, but never Union of South Africa.

You may be too young to know that the Republic of South Africa came into being when it left the British Commonwealth in 1961. When it was part of the commonwealth it was including other adjacent countries known as the Union of South Africa which is why loco No. 4488 was named as such in 1937.

Wasn't there a 47/8 called North Star? Even with twin tanks I suspect that was outside its fuel range.

Used to be an 87 called 'Kenilworth'

91115 is named 'Blaydon Races'

Virgin XC retained 'Blackpool Voyager' and 'Solent Voyager' after ceasing to serve Blackpool and Portsmouth (though both were later de-named)

It's still possible for an 86 to reach Glasgow, maybe even pulling a freight train.

But that particular loco which was leased to Anglia Railways at that time only went between Liverpool Street and Norwich.

Come to that where's South Africa? There is a "Republic of South Africa" and before it became a republic it was the "Union of South Africa".

However, it was a regular visitor to Glasgow when it was originally named.
Except it wasn’t “City of Glasgow” - that was 87006 and later 90004. I assume this is a reference to 86250 “The Glasgow Herald”.

86208 didn’t get to Chester on a regular basis and 86210 didn’t reach Edinburgh for many years after naming.

Adding a diesel: 43041 kept its “City of Discovery” plates for many years after transfer to the Western. Did they think it was a reference to Plymouth, rather than Dundee?

Speaking of Glasgow, 390033 has never been back since it derailed 10 years ago.
Well, yes. If you want to make daft comments like that, 86211 hasn't been back to Milton Keynes for over 30 years...

Hardly daft given some of 390033 remained fairly intact and put to further use at Crewe - which is more than what can be said for 86211.

But the whole of 390033 was written off, just as 86211 was, so it wasn’t going to go back to Glasgow. Given your response I’d probably upgrade daft to something else!

A Deutsche Bahn ICE 3 train is named after the city of Goslar, in Lower Saxony. As per German tradition the baptisement took place in Goslar station, but there was one small complication: the tracks aren't electrified.

Another planet...
AFAIK GBRf don't currently have any services that pass through Huddersfield (the biomass goes via Brighouse), so 66738 "Huddersfield Town" will be unlikely to pass close to the JSS. Still, more chance than the last loco to bear that name!

To be pedantic, that was the first time it was in the Commonwealth. It's now in the Commonwealth again but still called Republic of.

Unless it can time travel back to pre-1974 local government reorganisation, 'The West Riding Limited' can't technically visit the West Riding.

so based on some of the posts here , a unit or loco should be renamed if it is transfered to another TOC ? if that were the case should most preserved locos's be renamed acording to their current locations? Should locos named after regiments or Racehorses be renamed if the regiment or racehorse is no longer in existence. Of course not a name is given and should be carried for the life of the loco (or unit). Based on the earlier posts stock would be fitted with Dot Matrix units on the side instead of nameplates and could be renamed daily acording to use.
Remember the controversy regarding the renaming of 50.007.
