Any information welcome. Pictures of the inside I would especially like to see! Why did it fail?

Thanks :)

Exterior photo.

They were convered in 1990 and operated in InterCity services formed mainly of the EW IV (think of it like a Swiss version of our Mk4 coaches). They were taken over by Coop (one of the two main Swiss supermarket chains) in the late 90s and one vehicle was sold, the other scrapped. I don't know why exactly why the vehicles only lasted in service for less than 10 years perhaps the contract was only for a short period. The SBB operate 4 double deck IC2000 Starbucks buffet cars on select Geneva-Lausanne-Bern-Zurich-St Gallen services currently.

AFAIR the Swiss simply didn't take to that sort of catering on inter city trains.

AFAIR they were built new in 1992

Could that in theory ever be done within the UK loading gauge (would it all fit in with enough room to move)?

I can't really see a market when you can just buy your Maccies before you get on.

SBB's perfect connections perhaps create a market - unless you're willing to drop back an hour your connection is very often under 5 minutes, no time for a coffee or food.

Wasn't it a (gimmicky?) substitute for conventional restaurant cars, maybe because demand for those was dropping in line with most places.

Swiss CoOp or UK Co Op?
Ah Coop. Yes I know what it is, my sister’s face was splatted over all of their billboards, trolleys, bags and walls in 2015 as she was the girl they cast for their John Lewis style Christmas advert that year. They have trains too then?

A McDonalds could easily fit into the space of an Express Cafe

I don’t know about Switzerland but I’m sure the U.K. would make great use of an on board McDonalds!

I'm not sure it would. There are plenty of opportunities to buy greasy food to take on with you in the UK, and we don't do the same coordinated tight connections thing the Swiss do so there tends to be time to do so mid journey if you want.

It's not very practical to have deep fat fryers on rocking trains for obvious health and safety reasons. It would also consume a lot of energy and be quite maintenance intensive, the fryers need draining etc. Seems great, but the reality is less so.

The McD's restaurant car was probably a bit ahead of its time: these days, Switzerland has McD's almost every where. It was certainly quite well used in the day but I think it was essentially being run by McD's as 'rolling advertising' which suited SBB as it reduced the losses from train catering. However, I seem to recall that McD's couldn't agree a price for continuing to doing this with SBB/CFF so the cars were dropped after two or three years. The wheel is finally coming full circle in Switzerland as SBB/CFF are now reducing on-train catering as part of their ongoing economy drive: the Minibars are about to go.

Stena Line had McD and Burger King on their HSS ferries at one point, they were removed after a few years though.

If it were ever to be done on UK trains my bet would be on it being a SSP Burger King franchise, considering how much of a mark-up they charge in their station outlets I shudder to think how much they would expect for an on-board burger.

Always thought the SSP Burger Kings were a bit hit and miss . Come to think of it cant think of many McDS at UK railway stations .

SSP is the inheritor of many of the original Casey Jones sites on stations (which were converted to BKs about 25 years ago). But over time, McDs has managed to negotiate sites on stations (as far as I can see, only on NR operated stations so far): Victoria, Paddington, Liverpool St and Waterloo are ones that I can recall.

I've never heard of a burger chain called "Casey Jones", what part(s) of the UK were they found in?

When I was over in Switzerland back in the early 90's I had a first class all line 10 day rover and made full use of it. One trip I did was from Geneva Airport to Basle as the train had the Mcdonalds coach. I visited it twice on the trip. It was set up very casual inside. I remember one group having a business discussion sat round a small table. One my second visit to the car, I ordered Chicken Mcnuggets. The fryer did not have enough power to work, 'no energy' said the server, but we came into a station, the pantograph went up, and hey presto, they had enough power. Hag did a HO model of the coach, and the little people to man in, which I still have.
As a slight aside, DB ran one for about a year on the Berchesgartner Land IC/FD train. The coach was in the standard IC red, with just a M sign on the side. The swiss ones were all over advertising, one in red and one in gold. The one I went on was the red one. SBB produced a leaflet at the time, telling you of all the different restaurant cars, what trains they were on and such. I did not get to try the Cheese Express and missed out a Le Buffet Suisse one as it was full when I got on at Bern. On an Italian set, due to them having a lack of swiss francs for change, I negotiated for two packs of Salami. Happy days.

At stations only - the name is a clue - but mostly in and around London.
I vaguely remember visiting a Casey Jones in my childhood, and the only major station I would have visited back then would have been Glasgow Queen Street - was there an outlet there, or is it my imagination?

There was one at Newcastle, it's where the Burger King is/was, and one at Brighton, where the M&S now it. They liked to use the microwave as i once bought a burger from them, held it at an angle, the melted cheese came out from the bun and solidified on the box, which came away with the cheese when I tried to peel it off. Don't think I ever went back.

I’m not surprised!

Starbucks is SBBs official partner, but within an 'SBB Catering' offer:

Coffee: Starbucks.
Our SBB catering 3.0 concept will continue to feature our coffee partner S........s already a much-loved and well-known name in on-board catering. The world’s largest chain of coffee shops is just as famous for its wide range of hot drinks as it is for conjuring up a cosy ambience that invites you to stay and watch the world go by.

note I have deleted a link in the para above because I don't want to over-promote a brand I dislike

.
So you put it in big bold letters in your post instead.
