Renumbered to reflect differing transmission.

http://uktransport.wikia.com/wiki/British_Rail_Class_142

In 1989, Heaton depot implemented a planned Pacer renumbering scheme - which was to cover all Classes 142-144 - in which Class 142s would be renumbered 1422XX (SCG mechanical gearboxes) and 1425XX (Voith hydraulic transmission), thus, their units carried numbers 142516, 142518, 142519, 142520, 142521, 142522 and 142525, and all of their Class 143s were renumbered.

Heaton seemed to be the only dept that ever bothered to carry out these renumberings before they were dropped - most of the 143s were renumbered into the 1436xx series, but I think that 143020-025 initially became 143320-325...memory might be playing tricks though!

At the time I thought "How exciting". Looking back I feel someone needed their head read. That said the Pacers helped keep a lot of services running.
One thing I remember that was quite exciting was when one of the new chocolate and cream Pacers (Skippers to us, ooh arr) drove through the buffers on the headshunt in Exeter depot and the first car headed down the bank towards the river a la Gordon ending up in the ditch in one of the Thomas books.
I’ve never seen a photo of this incident but it did make us chuckle when we turned up one day and saw it.

One went through the buffers of (I think) platform 4 at Lime Street as well!

I don't remember the 143's being renumbered, but until I get all my old slides scanned I'm not sure if I've pictures of them operating in the NE anyway.
