Possibly some 56s, I guess, if it was the case, before the original Railfreight Grey tok over? Or was it only used on rebuilt/refurbished locos, such as the Class 37/4s?

56084-134 were all delivered from Doncaster or Crewe in large logo livery.

Were the 56s the very first recipients? An old (1981) copy of Ian Allan's Motive Power has 50003 as the only loco pictured carrying large logo livery, but I know they were delivered in original rail blue.

Always found it odd no Class 86s or 87s received large logo. 87006 was the closest in the experimental grey large logo livery.

I think large logo suited a lot of locos really well, especially the longer bodied ones.
Another early one was 47170 which became 47583 (not my photo). 4CE3B5DA-0908-477C-A15C-384EE96C58F4.jpeg

It had blue cabsides at first and was one of (maybe the first?) passenger locos to receive the scheme sometime around 1980.

I’m not sure when the first 50 (50023) went large logo? The first few refurbished ones were painted in standard blue, and also BR were still turning out overhauled 31s in standard blue for many years later. I bet the 31s would’ve looked pretty good in large logo. The similar original Railfreight scheme suited them well...

Remember walking round 30A one day back in the mists of time, to be confronted by said loco having literally just been moved outside the paint shop. Was certainly an eye opener at the time, and seemed to suit the 56's I thought.

A number of 73s received it as well.

I think all the Class 37/4s got the livery at the same time as they became /4 subseries locos? (Doubt they had it for long, seems most of them got either IC Mainline or Railfreight triple grey after only a few years). And a number of 47s? Plus the mentioned 50s of course. Did any 31s ever get it? Or did they go straight to one of the Railfreight liveries or IC Mainline?

Two 86s effectively received Large Logo colours (214 and 235), but with a large yellow square for Rainhill 150 in place of the double arrow.

That’s right about the 37/4s all receiving LL when refurbished.
I think the last one remaining in Large Logo may have been 37408.

From a quick look through a couple of picture galleries it seems like this loco may have had LL until it got EWS colours around 2000?

That's interesting - when I was a kid I had a OO model of 87022 "Cock o' the North" in large logo - was that a bit of artistic licence by Hornby? (or Lima - can't remember which!)
I remember that model. I think it was a bit of artistic license by Lima :).

That sounds about right. I was North of the border back then, and we had numerous large logo type 3's on the Oban/Mallaig & Kyle runs. Remember specifically '425 turning up at Fort 'Bill' one day, as it was the only member of the class I hadn't seen in it's old (proper) guise, as.....292, my memory is telling me, but don't hold me to that this far down the line! In those days, to me anyway, the last of the line was 308, being one of those used on the triple headers in Wales...fond memories!

Repainted from large logo to EWS in late 1998.

You may have been on the same trip as me - August 12th 1978 when I saw it at Stratford (age 7) on a trip with my dad. I wrote a diary of the day, which I found this evening - one sentence reads "Loco with big number and BR thing." I assume 'thing' was the double arrow

56036 entered traffic in January 1978, nominally allocated to Toton but in reality it could be found at the Railway Technical Centre undergoing a series of tests. In August 1978 56036 entered Stratford works and reappeared in a new livery of corporate blue with large double arrow logo’s, numbers and yellow painted cabs. This livery was applied at the behest of the Railway Design Panel and would eventually become standard for the class. On release from Stratford works 56036 entered general traffic.

A most comprehensive list Helvellyn. I did chuckle about the 08 but you’re absolutely right of course.

Very nearly, just been trying to find the pic of it I know I have (somewhere....!), the accompanying notebook says 13th August. I was in a habit of doing various bashes round London either on my own or with one or two mates back then, and SF was a firm favourite of mine, parts of it still having the feel of an old steam shed in many ways - you know, the 'New' shed area in particular, where the 03's were often kept at weekends. Looks like I started at the Cross (4 Deltics noted), then round to Liv St and Stratford, then back to Broad St and a 501 to Willesden (WN & OC) finally finishing at Marylebone shed - DMU's galore. Miss those old bone shakers now!

I remember mucking about in a friends bedroom which was about 0.25 mile from the Leicester-Burton freight only line. We heard a loud two tone blast of a train horn so watched from the window to see the loco. It was brand new 56128 passing with a rake of mgr wagons. A lot easier to see than the usual locos like 31’s 37’s & 47’s on ballast working & blue liveried early 56’s on coal.
