Asking for a friend who's a bit of a bum. He will be arriving in Edinburgh too late for the last train to Aberdeen and would like to wait in the waiting room overnight until the early morning 05:30 train - is this going to be OK?

No - the station closes for a few hours every night.

No, it closes from after the last trains until 4am so he'll need to find somewhere else.

I know this because I arrived on a very delayed late night train once and found myself locked in.

Tell them to plan ahead and visit a fancy dress shop to buy a pigeon outfit. Go to the station and lie down outside Boots, the staff will never guess it isn't the real pigeon that seems to lie there all the time and refuses to move for anyone.

Reminds me of the pigeon clip from Trigger Happy TV.

When is this for? There appear to be cheap hostel availability at this time of year. https://www.booking.com/searchresul...s=1&group_adults=1&group_children=0&from_sf=1

Back in around 2005/2006, myself, another forum member and a few others had a few hours to wait in Edinburgh overnight (from around 00.30 to 04.50) so we went to a nightclub (probably the last time I visited one!).

I take it you're not referring to the Balmoral Hotel?
Do shout up if you ever see the Balmoral available for a tenner. It's not a *very* good hotel but it's definitely nicer than my flat...

Most stations staffed 24 hours a day have their platforms closed for majority of the night, but the staff (mainly the station manager) remain at the station overnight. The reason they close overnight is probably to prevent people from sleeping in the station overnight.

Is there a decent casino in Edinburgh?- they're open 24hrs and certainly a good place to keep warm, eat & drink if dressed appropriately.

Edinburgh has a wide network of night buses. It's not a coincidence that Lothian buses belongs to the City and its neighbouring councils.

What time does your friend arrive into Edinburgh Waverley? Is there a possibility he/she may be able to make a train to Glasgow Central?

There's quite a variety to choose from really. Definitely the best night bus service outside of London!

Otherwise there's always 24/7 McDonalds. ;)

The police have got the 24 hour licence of the McDonalds on Princes Street removed as it was attracting unsavoury elements.

Waverley is only closed for a couple of hours and the two times I've done a cheap overnight there it was a case of walking around town for a bit and then watching the sun come up from the castle, rather bizarrely alongside some Japanese tourists who were photographing it. They were most polite to a slightly drunk Scotsman who was wondering why they had such large lenses and tripods at that time of the night.

Without a word of a lie Edinburgh’s red light district is directly under my living room window.

Living in Leith is never dull.

Oh dear! I moved around Edinburgh from 2000ish onwards, as the property boom was starting to take off.

Leith was fun. But then I couldn't afford it any more so I moved on... from the red light district to the gay red light district...

Best would be get the night bus to the Airport for a couple of hours then back at least it'll be warm & safer than walking the streets in the early hours

Where's the red light district in Edinburgh then...?

It's all over. Like most cities. Look up if you are ever walking down Lothian Road late one evening.

A colleague's daughter ended up living in a flat above one on Lothian Road, her father was absolutely outraged - but she said it was the safest she'd ever felt living in Edinburgh. The stairs were always freshly painted, they had a cleaner in twice a day to keep things spotless, the main door was never broken and there was a bouncer on shift 24 hours a day who was happy to act as a concierge for other residents.

Oddly enough, after her boyfriend broke the neck of his femur skiing, she ended up hiring one of the gentlemen herself one night for a Ceilidh. 20% "Friends and family" discount + they through in complimentary kilt hire (apparently it's a bit of a fetish for the tourists). Had an amazing night.

If the chap is really stuck, could always download a dating app for a one night stand.

And because there's maintenance and cleaning going on which mean areas need to be closed to the public.

Sounds like the only thing that changed was the gender. Which part of town did you move to?
