Similar to the Red Dot Day that EMT are running, SWT have set up a Midsummer Madness Promotion that has just been added to the FRPP.

FRPP said:
Midsummer Madness Promotion on South West Trains

South West Trains is offering customers a £10 day return ticket for travel on weekends in August (excludes Bank Holiday Weekend). Tickets are available between any two stations served by SWT, except stations west of Honiton; and stations Warminster to Bristol Temple Meads inclusive. (A map of the area is available on http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/SWTrains/News/_midsummermadness.htm.)

Price
Adult: £10.00

Child: £5.00

Ticketing
There is no pre-booking requirement with tickets available for purchase from Saturday 25 July until Sunday 23 August. The Midsummer Madness ticket will only appear for journeys where the Off Peak or Super Off Peak day Return is greater than £10.

Tickets will appear in TIS as:

[MMP] Day Break Promo.
Route: SW Trains Only

Tickets are also available from TVMs at stations served by SWT and online, appearing as:

Midsummer Madness

Out-boundary Day Travelcards are not included in the promotion, and customers should be issued with a separate Day Travelcard to cover the Zones required.

Midsummer Madness tickets can be used in conjunction with attractions, PlusBus and the London Evening Standard’s Child travels for 10p promotion.

Terms and Conditions
· Tickets are only valid as a day return for travel on SWT services.

· They are valid for travel on 1/2, 8/9, 15/16, 22/23 August only.

· Stations west of Honiton and stations Warminster to Bristol Temple Meads inclusive are excluded from the promotion.

· No further discounts are available.

· Journeys priced by other TOCs, but wholly within the area, are excluded from the promotion.

· Normal refund rules apply.

Further information
Please visit our website at: http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/SWTrains/News/_midsummermadness.htm for a map of the promotional area.

Would I be allowed to go by any obscure route that wouldn't normally be allowed then?

e.g. Reading to Basingstoke via Clapham Junction?

Well not that specific route because the Midsummer Madness Promotion tickets are Route SW Trains Only and the only operators that service the route between Reading and Basingstoke are Arriva Cross Country and First Great Western.

However I would assume that any valid route within the National Routeing Guide (http://www.atoc.org/rsp/Routeing_Guide), that was made using only SWT, would be permitted using these tickets.

Interesting to note that - Whereas the Red Dot Day promos are like a one-day Rover valid on EMT services only and can be used for as many seperate journeys that day as possible - The SWT equivalent is priced and ticketed as a simple day return... :?

Now don't get me wrong, Waterloo > Weymouth for a tenner return is pretty damn good value...But an SWT-only day Rover would allow me to get a lot more coverage in, and would be closer to the promo that EMT are running. ;)

Anybody know why SWT have done their summer promo in this way, and not using the Rover approach that EMT have come up with? :?:

P.S: If anyone wants to see which stations are/aren't included in the promo, a 700Kb PDF promotion map is available Here :)

Can the tickets be purchased from any station or just SWT ticket offices?
the top bit on the website says available from staffed SWT stations.
http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/SWTrains/News/_midsummermadness.htm

Lower down, it says available from any national rail station.
It would save time (& queues at Waterloo) to purchase from my local FCC station before travel.

An alternative I suppose is to book online & nominate the ticket machine at my local station for colleciton.

Most likely to prevent people selling the tickets on after they have been used or even giving them away to friends and family like people do with In Boundary Travelcards.

EMT doesn't have this issue as they have only one station in the 'Metro' area which is where most ticket fraud happens.

I've had a check and the fares are available from any National Rail ticket office, Avantix Mobile, online and at relevant TVMs....

The EMT £10 deal will be used by most people as a value return service. I imagine most people wouldn't use it to go bashing like us enthusiasts would do. So, in a sense, SWT's offer is a bit more oriented to the everyday passenger. As you've said, £10 is a good deal for a good number of SWT's routes across the network and it will encourage families to take the train for a day out.

Has anyone been able to book this online for 23 August? Doesn't seem to be available as an option...

FCC is also doing a special cheap-day return deal to London for the summer too. Again, no special on the Travelcard and not a rover-type ticket.

FCC offer is 20% off london travelcards or 25% returns to London terminals - no railcard discounts, so if you have a railcard the normal tickets with railcard will still be cheaper.
The London terminals ticket is sold as a super off-peak day return.

I love all this simplification of tickets, such that we can have a ticket called 'super off-peak'!!

Well, now that fares are so much simpler we know that 'Railcard holders get 1/3 off all Off-Peak fares.'*

*except when they don't, because it's a 'special' off-peak fare **

**added by me, as that might actually be too descriptive following 'simplification'

There's a £13 minimum on a Network Railcard in the week, so the FCC offer is actually better for stations where the discounted fare is below that amount. I think we established earlier that this applied for stations south of Huntingdon?

The FCC offer only applies at weekends, until 6 September.

Also it only applies for return journeys TO London.
