Sorry, but you've lost me on the issue of dual-voltage.

Surely all units that will see use on the NLL will need to be dual-voltage, so what's the score with the ELL? Also, will 4 car units ever be used on the NLL or are folk just talking about the possibility of cross-cover?

I expect the need for ballast weights has more to do with the spring and damper rates in the suspension than anything else. Having a coach that is operationally lighter than the design weight to meet a TOC's specification would require a different suspension set-up which is more expensive than just ballasting the vehicle to reach a pre-determined unladen weight. However, I can see why SET specified their Cl375's in the way they did, as it means the total unit weight is as low as possible and gives better point-to-point performance for what is ultimately a metro unit. I would have imagined that LOROL would have pulled the same trick if only their units were 5 cars in length too, but having 3 and 4 car units restricts the options when it comes to spreading the weight around.

O L Leigh

The North London Line is the only one which requires dual voltage. The others only require 3rd rail like the class 508s. Only reason class 313s are used on Euston-Watford is because most of the 508s are in Merseyside. Plus they could be used all over the sliverlink metro routes. Its going to be interesting when southern start to refurbish the class 313s that they are ment to be getting.

Sorry to bring this thread down to my level but is it just me or is the upholstery on the 378s revolting?

I agree. Retro fabrics are fine, but the 378 is a modern train. It just clashes. If they could have designed a 1960s looking train (with slim stainless steel fixtures and fittings, a ribbed wooden floor etc !) then maybe it would have looked less out of place

I like the seat colour. I think it suits the colour of the poles.

I guess it doesn't matter what the seats look like. I can't see the trains looking that nice after they've been in use for a few months.

I'm sure the glass has anti-etch film on it, but I bet every other panel will be scratched to pieces in days.

Well Willesden Junction is advertised as step free:

http://overgroundmicrosite.tfl.gov.uk/Documents/Overground-In-train-Map-Mar-09.aspx

but only from platform to street. There is a more detailed map which shows the distance between the platform and the tube floor:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/step-free-tube-guide-map.pdf

Are the ramps applicable to BAkerloo Line users which is lower than platfrom level?

No station is actually advertised as fully step free, hence the general dislike of the wheelchair symbols. What TfL means by step free is step free access from the platforms to the street and doesnt actually involve the trains. Which to me seems stupid and pointless to have a wheelchair symbol there when its not always easy to do the jounery in a wheelchair.

AFAIK there isn't a step down/up ramp for the Bakerloo.

Doesn't the Victoria line at King's Cross now have a section that is raised - presumably for wheelchair access? Why can't the whole platform be raised like this?

(And when are the lifts going to be working? I've seen the one tucked away by the Northern Line already)

The key for the symbol does actually say "step-free access from the London Overground platform to the street."

I think outside of Light rail systems level access without the use of ramps is pretty rare due to the different types of trains, door locations & clearance issues. Trains with footsteps such as 170s and 220s will never be fully level with the platform.

However, if all platforms were at least the same height and distance from the tracks, and ideally straight, then when new trains were being designed step and gap free access could be a consideration. The sheer variety present on the network precludes designers from even trying.

Lift is due to be opened early next year. It may open with the new booking hall in December.

As for raising the platforms it would cost too much. Interestingly the 09TS can change its height but this isn't going to be used for disabled access but rather keep the train in profile under different loading patterns.

I didn't realise that actually! The Underground is different then. Then again the Overground is easiler to get lifts and ramps than some of the Tube stations, especially the heavily used ones.

On the Victoria Line platform at KGX, it seems the platform has been raised simply by laying down loads more tarmac.

I always wonder why the platforms are so low at Highbury & Islington <> Moorgate when the 313s have been used for years and years, and no other stock ever uses it. Surely these could have been raised?

Money was tight and accessibility was barely even heard-of when the conversion took place in the 1970s, and no major infrastructure work has been done since (indeed, IIRC none of the platforms on the Northern City have step-free access from platform to street either...)

They are stations that time forgot. Besides still having NSE signs, there are no screens at ground level for you to see if there are any trains running, or when the next train is! I know it's run by LUL - but I'm amazed FCC hasn't tried to get some screens put upstairs (especially Old Street on account of it being their HQ!).

These stations may be from the land that time forgot, but they're actually very busy. There's nothing worse than walking down and finding big delays (always the day I don't get the SMS alert or forget to check!).

I can tell you now that there is a project in the works for just this but its needs some sorting out as FCC can't install their equipment there as it has to be to LU/TfL standards. Maybe they will sort this issue out along with Blackfriars issue too.

I did bring it up with FCC on their online forum a while back and they said they'd be investigating such an idea. Didn't realise they are now doing so! Good news!

Although todays launch into service went ok, there are reports that police were preventing some phtographers from taking photos of the new train or in some cases getting on it.

Having seen a unfurnished 378 down at Shoeburyness previously, in amongst the 357's, I was more interested now in how the inside would look now it's kitted out.

Train on diagram was 378005.

Must say it was wierd being able to see from end to end inside!

There were some problems with a group of young people who had taken video cameras tripods and all and just ridden round on the train all day - and no longer had a valid fare (Oyster PAYG times out after 90 minutes or so)

I rode the 1537 x SRA and they were causing the crew a bit of hassel at Richmond wanting to film the cab controls, and filming the interiors; when all the traincrew wanted to do was lock the train OOU at Richmond so they could have their PNB.

Aside from that, there were some LO Travelsafe Officers and some PCSOs on the 1537, they got off at Camden Road and were fairly amiable; they seemed just as interested in the new stock as some of the customers.

I noticed that as well. Were the people with the tripods the ones hysterically laughing as the train pulled into Richmond?

That was them, they were discussing whether or not to get off at Kew, or alternative connections so they could ride a Juniper from Richmond.

They were also sprouting some nonsense about the Gospel Oak-Barking line which just wasn't true - and seemed to have no idea that that is also part of the LO network!
