I appreciate the situation. Looking on RTT (http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/O77117/2018/03/03/advanced) it made it speedily enough back that surely reopening should be a go tomorrow? Guess we'll wait and see.

Looking at the journey planner
"Sunday 04 March
We are planning to run a normal Sunday service on our West of England routes tomorrow, subject to normal engineering works."

So looks like it be back to normal tomorrow, all be it with rubbish connections at Basingstoke (looking at RTT it connects with a stopping service to Waterloo rather than a fast service)

A lot of it will be melted tomorrow, temperatures are on their way up. In MK I predict very little by midday tomorrow and none whatsoever by Monday. We are going to see a return to spring temperatures by the coming week.

There may of course be localised flooding as it melts.

The snowploughs in use are doing a good job, but their design means that snow is pushed to either side of the track it is running on. Road ploughs divert the snow to just one side.

The existing rail ploughs are good for single track, but is there a case for a plough that doesn't push snow on to another running line? Or am I missing something?

I am no expert but I would have thought that there would be a derailment/track damage risk with all that force to one side.

GWR are only running a service every two hours on its Padd - Bristol and Padd - South Wales routes. I think that is pretty poor compared to what other "Intercity" operators are operating.

Do we know how good or how bad it is en route ?

From what I’ve heard, Taxis we’re refusing to take train crew from Swansea - Bridgend as the line is shut by engineering work. Other crews assisting, but obviously an overall reduction in service.

I know it isn't ideal, but couldn't they use the rail replacement buses, although that depends if they were even running.

Of course , ALL this snow will melt with rising temperatures ...so I presume flooding could be a problem ...??
Ive seen pics on BBC News of huge snowdrifts in Devon , and moors of Yorkshire which will melt and feed into rivers .

Why would taxis refuse to take crew? If someone is paying the fare then the operation of the railway is non of their business.

I don't think the OP meant they refused to take traincrew specifically, rather they refused to make that journey, probably due to road conditions.

:idea::idea:

Lets hope they don't have to dig the Snow Plough out.:D

On a brighter note Sheringham to Norwich is now open courtesy of the Plough.!

The WCML North of Carlisle looks like it may be open following a route proving run by 47245 this morning.

A Pendolino is heading South from Polmadie (showing 5Z24 on diagrams) and a freight service is now approaching Lockerbie, with another (4S43 Carlisle Yard - Mossend) departing Carlisle Yard.

On the West of England line, there is a minor speed restriction in the Axminster area due to high flooding levels. Was probably inevitable.

Hull Trains services decimated over recent days due to:-
"ingress of ice and snow into the electrics, which has resulted in additional repairs being required to return some of our trains to service."
This doesn't appear to have been a problem with other TOCs though (or maybe it has?)

I think pretty much every TOC has more units out of action at the moment than normal, it is just that it is more noticeable with a small company like Hull Trains that only has a very small fleet to begin with.

RTT shows VT 5Z25 ECS Carlisle-Glasgow has reached Carstairs.
Also shows an SR train 1L55 Glasgow-GSW-Carlisle has reached Gretna Jn.
I think this is the first through service via the GSW route (earlier services ran Carlisle-Dumfries only).

Edit:
Several 1Zxx VT EMU services between Carlisle and Glasgow now on RTT for the evening.
The first southbound, 1Z18 has just left Glasgow Central.

Indeed, on VTWC something like that will only be noticeable to those who get a single Voyager instead of an 11-car Pendolino or an outright cancellation of one of their 3tph.

Thanks for clarifying - was on a couple of GWR Bristol services earlier and while busy I would have said they were no busier than on a normal Sunday afternoon.
