LAKE DISTRICT AIRPORT LAUNCHES FIRST SCHEDULED PASSENGER FLIGHTS FOR 25 YEARS

Carlisle airport, gateway to the Lake District, will get its first scheduled passenger flights for a quarter-century on 4 June, when Loganair starts services to Southend, Belfast City and Dublin.

The Cumbrian airport, which is owned by Stobart Group, will have eight flights a day from Monday to Friday, and a total of 12 at weekends.

Jonathan Hinkles, managing director of Loganair, said: “We’re delighted to become the first operator at the new Carlisle Lake District Airport, and will be opening up Loganair’s services to a whole new range of customers.

Its finally happening Carlisle Airport is having Scheduled flights, I can't see it working though as Belfast and Dublin aren't that big of a market and given how far London Southend Airport is from London and to a certain extent how far Carlisle is from Carlisle Airport. I think Virgin Trains won't worry that their half hourly service to London from Carlisle is under threat.

Carlisle itself isn't very big so I can't see there being demand for flights.

The main downside to the plan is the fact that Carlisle has no public transport links to the airport and no car hire on site either. Not great for an airport in the middle of the Lake District.

I’ll be making this journey in the summer and it’ll be interesting to see the loadings.

I can see a use for "park and fly" going out of Carlisle but a destination airport with no onward public transport doesn't seem particularly useful. In my adult life I have only made one journey within the UK where flying was more convenient which was London City to Dundee as I could walk to my Dundee hotel and be back at my desk in London at lunchtime after the return flight. In every other case the faff of getting to and from airports has meant that train or car has been the best option.

When did they build this airport "in the middle of the Lake District"? Carlisle airport is as far from the Lake District as Southend Airport is from London. It is actually nearer to Northumberland National Park.

It's marketed as Lake District Airport so one assumes this is the market they want to tap.

The market may well be business travelers heading to Sellafield area. There are weekly workers, a good number from over the Irish Sea, for whom a 1 hour drive from Carlisle to get to/from an airport is much more preferable than driving or public transport option of 3+ hours to Glasgow / Newcastle / Manchester / Liverpool for the short flight.

which is not much use if there's no onward transport options

Im sure theres some enterprising coach/bus company who will be looking at this - be silly if they hadnt already been in talks with both the airport and loganair about providing such a service.

And looking at it fomr the other way - connecting flights from either Dublin can get you to america rather than having to go to Glasgow or Manchester and possibly on wards cheap flights to the med from Southend which is Stobart make the interchange easy then its a win win for the passenger without them again having to go to Glasgow or Manchester by train or car or coach.

I would think as well Carlisle Airport could do with a car hire although its unlikely to get one until the airport has established itself. Cumbria and the Lake District is a very car dependent region. Regarding busses there is currently one from the airport but its a local one and takes some time to reach Carlisle City Center.

The airport has hinted that a new bus service is in the offing, and as most of the major car rental operators have a presence in the city, it's presumably quite likely that they'll offer cars for pick up and drop off at the airport - even if they don't have physical desks there at the launch of flight services.

Indeed, many provincial airport car rental operations are actually satellites of an in-town office, or the in-town one is a satellite of an airport one, if the latter has more available space for vehicle storage and prep.

Is it relatively easy for car hire companies to shift their vehicles to other locations if this doesn't take off? Presumably they can sell vehicles on the general market as a last resort?

They wouldn't necessarily buy any additional vehicles to start with; they'd just park half a dozen that would have been in the St Nicholas Industrial Estate lock-up (for example) at the airport. If they needed one back in town, they'd send a valeter and a driver up to bring it back.

The fares are out, it starts at about £45 each way from London Southend to Carlisle, I am going to do the flight just to say I have flown from Carlisle Airport.

Easyjet have to run 3x daily Newcastle-Belfast on a Friday and Sunday to cope with demand. Dublin demand has died off a bit- Stobart Air/Aer Lingus are down to daily- but there should be enough to go round.

Newcastle is much bigger than Carlisle is and Newcastle Airport also serves Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and to a large extent Teesside given that Durham Tees Valley Airport is now a nothing airport.

Carlisle on the other hand is much smaller and there isn't any other large places nearby.

The local rag is reporting that the start of flights from Carlisle has been put back to 3rd September:

Flights from Carlisle Lake District Airport will not go ahead as planned on Monday.

Stobart Group announced today that a "growing global shortage of qualified air traffic control staff available to meet training and regulatory deadlines" has meant scheduled flights will not lift off until September.

The airport is therefore unable to open for commercial air services on its planned June 4 launch date. This has been postponed until September 3.

A Scottish airline flying to Carlisle (eventually) will reinforce the misapprehension that is fairly widespread that Carlisle is in Scotland.

Borders are somewhat arbitrary. I can see the sense of flying from Southend to Carlisle. Both tiny airports (though the former has aspirations) and a 1 hour flight rather than 5 hours at best by rail. Of course, whether there is the demand time will tell

It certainly has potential. Loganair recently pulled out of Durham Tees Valley (DTV/MME), with their flights to Norwich (weird one, mind!) and Aberdeen (in effect, doubling the Eastern Airways flights). There's definately a gap in the market that way, towards the northern tip of the Lake District.

'towards the northern tip of the Lake District.'

Carlisle itself ( I don't know where the airport is) is over 30 miles north of the northern extremity of the Lake District.

It isn't, it's about 10 miles from Carlisle to the border of the national park just above Caldbeck. The airport is about 6 miles west of Carlisle.

I really wish this project well.

Operating the London flights to City Airport instead of Southend would make them more attractive.

That said, Southend is also a Stobart-owned airport.

so by that logic british airways cant fly anywhere else but britain?

but i believe city airport may have higher fees than say southend. and yes both being stobart airports will make things easier and possibly cheaper.

and by that logic everyone should fly to city airport as its more attractive. attractive to people who actually need that side of town of course but not to those who may want the west side of town which would be heathrow otlr the southern end of town for which gatwick is more attractive or even the north and north east which would make luton and stanstead more attractive and so on and ao forth

I'm sure Loganair will be flattered by your linkage to BA.

Undoubtedly Southend will prove an attractive destination to those good folk of East Cumberland wanting to travel to parts of Essex.
