Great 1-3 win away at Brentford last night for Cardiff, after us being 1-0 down pretty early on. 7 wins in a row now, 11 unbeaten. 7 points clear of 3rd and 9 games left. All looking good, especially with Villa having a meltdown against QPR last night too.

On a sidenote - if anyone has the chance to do an away game at Brentford but hasn't yet - take the chance before they get their new stadium. Griffin Park is a proper old ground, away terrace and all! And there are pubs on each corner of the ground, and another nice pub just 5 minutes away by the train station. All very friendly. Makes such a difference compared to the welcome you get in some other places!

Sevilla's second goal last night was pure comedy.

Didn't see the whole game, saw the goals only, but the goals United conceded were surprising. I saw the post-match reaction online and was astonished to find Mourinho had set the team out so negatively. Sevilla are not a good team and should not be scoring twice at Old Trafford.

I saw most of the game on TV, the first half was absolutely dire. Mourinho's tactics seemed to be to play like the away team, Sevilla sensed it was there for the taking and put Ben Yedder on with about 20 minutes to go and within a few minutes he'd scored twice and it was game over, Lukaku's goal was nothing more than a consolation. I think this could be the beginning of the end for Mourinho and his rather pathetic post match comment won't have helped his cause.

Aye, I don't think us (Fulham) will be catching you now. We're unbeaten in 15 but your cracking 7/7 wins hasn't allowed us to close the gap to any sort of late challenge for second. Playoffs here we (hopefully) come again then. If we hadn't have ballsed up and lost to Burton and Sunderland earlier in the season...

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
Just of of curiosity, how come Cardiff City, Swansea City, Newport County, and Wrexham play in the English league system? I am pretty sure that Welsh FA have their own league system.

On a side note, the 1965-2002 incarnation of Clydebank played their home matches at Kilbowie Park until 1996 when it was sold off for development. Clydebank then groundshared Boghead, which is the home of Dumbarton. When plans were announced in the early Noughties to rebuild Boghead, the then owners of Clydebank sought to play their "home" matches at Lansdowne Road in Dublin, and still be a member of the Scottish FA. Needless to say, this was rejected as the position from UEFA was that they (Clydebank) had to play in the country of where the FA that they are a member is based.

This did not stop attempts for Clydebank to play their home matches at Netherdale, the home of Gala Fairydean, nor at Brunton Park (the home of Carlisle United). For the final season of Clydebank's existence, they eventually settled on playing their "home" matches at Cappielow Park, the home of Greenock Morton (and on the opposite side of the mighty Clyde, with no easy accessible public transport between Clydebank and Greenock).

A bizzarre turn of events at the end of the 2001-02 season saw Airdrieonians (the original 1874-2002 incarnation) go into liquidation at the final whistle of their away match to Ayr United. Enter the former Aston Villa, Barcelona, and Scotland internationalist Steve Archibald who led a consortium to take over the 1965 incarnation of Clydebank. As Clydebank did not have a home, and as Airdrieonians went into liquidation, they were relocated to Airdrie, dispensed with the honours won, and renamed Airdrie United. Furthermore, owing to Airdrieonians liquidation, all of the teams through the leagues that finished the season below them moved up one slot, which saved Falkirk from dropping into the third tier. The vacant slot was subsequently taken by Gretna (the 1946-2008 incarnation) which was owned by pig farmer Brookes Mileson who had a love of Aston Martins and lavish spending.

When Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham etc were founded there was no formal Welsh League. This is why they play in the English hierarchy.

I think it was more of the lack of a professional Welsh league rather than one at all. If I remember my Cardiff history correct, we actually played in the South Wales amateur league early on and had to turn down an invite into the English leagues due to our ground at the time. It was only a few years later when we either were invited or requested to be allowed to join the English leagues and were allowed to.

There’s first place or there’s no place. Arsenal in my view bred the best side ever to grace the Premier League - the “Invincibles”; the only PL side good enough in my view to have been worthy of any sort comparison to Liverpool’s side of 83-84. That Liverpool side is the best in the televised era of the game.

I was talking to a Man Utd fan at work yesterday about the Invincibles and he pretty much said they bored themselves to the title. I know they scored a mere 73 PL goals that Season, and seemingly drew a lot. And this was in an era when only Arsenal, Liverpool and Man Utd had a realistic chance of winning the PL - which was why it was set up in the first place, although I don't know how they convinced Everton and Spurs of the financial benefits.
Indeed, this fan was happy to put obvious rivalries aside and hopes that City do win the PL at a canter with records beginning to be broken - even if it means techincally winning it on 7th April. His argument is that it would hit Bourinho and he United board where it hurts, and they would HAVE to go back to their own legacy of entertaining football. Mind you, this was before the Sevilla match.

Oh! And by the way re-Carraghergate; Colwyn Bay isn't in Manchester!

If the rules are that strict how is it that Berwick Rangers get to play in the Scottish League?

From what I understand they were affiliated to the SFA very early on and seem to have stayed that way. At the time the rules allowed cross border competition such that Queens Park reached 2 FA cup finals and Scottish clubs appeared in the FA cup up until 1887. They were part of the Scottish league structure via the East of Scotland league befoire joining the league. I also expect practicalities in the late/very early 20th century explain why the club plays in Scotland. I bet it was easier to travel north to play local clubs rather than south into Northumberland. I bet it was better/easier travel or cash wise, than joining the Northern League or Northern Football Alliance .

The Welsh clubs play in the English system are there for similar reasons. It seems there wasn't a Welsh league so the clubs were encouraged to join the English league structure. The non league clubs play in the English system for the same reason - there was no welsh non league structure for them to join. When the Welsh league was set up they were offered a chance to change but they refused as the Welsh league was amateur and was seen to be of a lower quality. A couple of clubs subsequently went bust and reformed in the Welsh structure.

What Carragher did was horrible, however, I have heard people saying it is the vilest thing you can do, some saying they would rather be punched (Not on here). I was mugged in Aigburth years ago and ended up knocked out by an unfound weapon. I woke up in Casualty with 21 stitches in my head. I would rather have been spat at. There have even been violent idiots like Vinnie Jones and Joey Barton sticking their oar in to stir it up. As for the motorist who was driving his car whilst goading Carragher and filming him when he was driving his daughter along a busy road. I mean that is six points and a £200 fine isn't it. Back to Carragher, if he looses his job so be it. Stupid and unpleasant thing to do.
Could someone clarify ,is the six points and £200 fine always the outcome or can the police decide to not enforce it. I gather the gentleman involved has been sent on a driver awareness course. On the matter of Carragher's future with sky, I get the impression that he will not be getting the sack.

Thanks. I don't suppose that it will be a problem unless BR qualify for a European competition.

I don't think it is always the outcome. This chap got sent on a driving awareness course for example so there you go I guess.

It seemed to me to be at the higher end of how dangerous using a mobile phone while driving can be. Did he get the sympathy vote. I am surprised more has not been said about it.

Normally I would have said more but as a Liverpool fan I thought I would have looked like I was trying to deflect from what Carragher did. For what it's worth I'm glad he hasn't been sacked.

I don't support Liverpool and was looking at it only as a driving offence, regardless of Carragher. I am also glad he did not get the sack.

He is one of the better pundits along with Gary Neville (Which as a red sticks in the throat, ha ha). I have been a bit surprised by some people's comments across various media. Stuff like "If I'd spat at someone I would have been sacked". Chances are you would have been if you'd been sat at your desk when you did it. Other comments like spitting at someone is the worst thing you can do. Maybe it is just me but that suggests a lack of imagination for starters. Is being spat at the worst thing you can think of? My god you have lived a blessed life if it is.

Not sacked but suspended until the end of the season, when his contract is due for renewal. Will it be renewed is a different question,

All sounds a bit Jeremy Clarkson!

Don’t be so sure. Fulham are my dark horse for Automatic. A very straightforward run in. Cardiff and Villa both have some big games to play, including each other.

Of course mate. Never realised his contract was up at the end of the season.

Loosely related to football but not sure it's worth it's own thread:

Topman are coming under pressure to withdraw a shirt some believe refers to the Hillsborough disaster.

The red shirt with a large number 96 is being seen by some Liverpool fans as a reference to the club's kit and number of victims killed in the 1989 disaster.

Louise Brookes, whose brother Andrew was killed, and MP for Wirral South Alison McGovern are among those calling for it to be removed from sale.

Topman are yet to reply but there is no suggestion of a deliberate reference.

A section of Liverpool fans making something out of nothing in my opinion.

That shirt is in bad taste. A lot of people still say Hillsborough was karma for Heysel and “what comes around goes around”. I’ve heard that myself and seen it on Twitter over the years.

A red shirt with a 96 on it, *and* the word “karma”, *and* “what goes around comes around” is more than coincidence in my view.

I prefer to see incompetence over malice but something isn’t right with that shirt.

Just seen the Arsenal highlights. That was a disgraceful dive by Welbeck for the penalty. I’m astonished the goal line official gave that. What are they for if they’re giving garbage like that?

Having not seen the game, but seen an Arsenal supporting friends Facebook status ‘never a penalty’ I wrongly assumed it had been awarded the AC Milan. Says it all when his own fan makes such comment

Topman have stopped selling that "Hillsborough" shirt.

My theory is that whoever designed that shirt knew what they were doing, but Topman's buyer hadn't a clue. To be fair to them, a lot of the references would be lost on someone who had no interest in football.
