As 175001 says there were no issues on the Harrogate loop so more tall tails. As for fuel economy I have never heard any issues with the 170s used on various stopping trains from Birmingham or Glasgow local work? I presume they all have the same engines? I dont see how they can be worse than a 37 or a 158 on stopping train. I don't think Northerns major concern is fuel economy.

Routes will be Leeds - Harrogtate - York and Southport - Vic - Leeds

All the Sprinter-derived units drive through a hydraulic system at low speeds, that does the job of a clutch in a car but also wastes energy as heat. When you hear the engine note drop as it accelerates, that is the transmission locking out and above that speed the engine drives directly and efficiently. Being geared for 100mph and with an engine that's a bit low on power for this role, perhaps the 170 is worse than the other classes. 172s and 195s have multi-speed gearboxes which make them rather more efficient at lower speeds.

Are they still intended for the Chester-Leeds/Bradford service? That has a fair bit of fast running. Otherwise most of Northern's faster services will be Connect, so 158s in the North East and 195s elsewhere.

Obviously there will be a phased introduction onto the Harrogate loop, but does anyone know how many 170's are expected to be used from the timetable change?

In addition, I was wondering if anyone yet knows if they will have booked work all week, or just Monday - Friday? Essentially is it likely they will be ready on Sunday?

I'll be using the Harrogate line on Monday (21st), what are the chances of a 170 being used?

I think you’ll probably get 2 out per day which leaves the other 2 for crew training to continue. The new livery one will be out and about on Monday as I’m sure Northern will have lined up some press etc

Will any of the units retain their 1st class accommodation?
The 1st class area is quite nice with comfortable reclining seats, curtains, power sockets and desirable 2+1 seating. Many Northern routes would be ideally suited for a small 1st class area. Also, the 1st class area doesn't take up much room yet would provide extra revenue for Northern.

Northern Rail will be a standard class only franchise, the class 170 refurb will remove it.

I'd bet any money they don't!

Northern have stated I believe that no provision for First Class will be provided, and given that the cascades & new stock are to offer more seating capacity amongst other things it's highly unlikely they'll keep any old configurations post refurb. And besides I remember what it was like when their 321s went for their first refurbishment & 321s from Silverlink amongst others were brought in on load to cover, after a few days there was always a mad dash by the savvy commuters to get into the First Class area (albeit declassified). Caused more than a few arguments I can tell you!

The 4 that’s already at Northern don’t have 1st class anyway do they?
They don't, but five of the sets due to be transferred to Northern (170453 - 457) did have it retro-fitted while with Scotrail. No sense in retaining first just on those five trains when Northern is remaining an all standard class TOC.

Does anyone know how many seats Northern's 170s will have after their refurbishment?

Thanks.

I imagine the only chance of declassified 1st will be if any of those 5 have to be pressed into service before they can be refurbished.

Anyone aware of which diagrams the class 170’s are occupied to tomorrow on the Harrogate loop? Planning a jolly up to Harrogate from Leeds.

6 more 170s due in July with the final 6 in November. I would guess that July's are split between Harrogate and driver training on Leeds-Southport with full inroduction on the route in December, when 195s are also due to start on the Calder Valley route.

0701 Leeds to Knaresborough and 0655 Harrogate to Leeds are a starting point for the other 2 diagrams which puts 2 on the Knaresboroughs and 1 on the York

170478 ran from Neville Hill to Harrogate just after 1pm yesterday presumably to stable overnight.
