This might have been asked before, but could someone recommend to me a book on the glasgow and south western railway please?
Wikipedia is useless and i prefer reading books about railways in general

I can recommend the book "Tales of the Glasgow & South Western Railway" by David L. Smith ( SBN 7110 0168 5) you might get a copy from Amazon or BAE books first published in 1961 reprint in 1970, Hope this helps.

A more recent book than David L Smith's is The Glasgow & South Western Railway: A History by David Ross, published in 2014.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Glasgow-South-Western-Railway-History/dp/184033648X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526493389&sr=8-1&keywords=glasgow+&+south+western+railway+a+history

Does what it says in the title, tells the company's story in detail and is also well illustrated. Not cheap but worth the money, in my opinion.

Depending on how in depth you want to get, there is also the Glasgow & South Western Railway Association, which may be able to offer further reading suggestions and has an archive at Kilmarnock station.
