Apologies if this has already been mentioned but does anyone know if Virgin Trains (West Coast) have made some revisions to their west midlands fares priced advance fares? I normally can purchase their lowest priced advance ticket from Birmingham to anywhere else beyond Euston for £14.50. For instance over to Norwich or down to the Kent coast. These fares don't seem to exist beyond 20th May timetable change.

Any further information would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Thanks. I have looked for July from Birmingham to Norwich and nothing cheaper than £30, which made me think they have been adjusted.

It’s possible that a timetable change has meant that you will be making different connecting services to what you are before hand and this might mean that the same advances are not available. Some playing with more advanced ticket retailers websites where you can add multiple via points or adjust the connection time might bring up better results.

It would appear from all the bookings I have done 20th May onwards Virgin have changed all their Advance ticket categories. This is a bit inside baseball but instead of VES, VDS, VCS, VBS, VAS, BDO, BCO, BBO, BAO they are using V2X, V2W etc throught V2A.

So on that basis I think VES £14.50 will have gone and V2X at £30 the new base.

Ouch, if the new format is V#* (where # is a number- 1 for 1st, 2 for Standard class - and * is a code letter), then for VTWC+connections fares it seems the - sometimes rather scarce - base (lowest) tier is going up a fair whack.

This has certainly made splitting tickets a far better option for travelling on VTWC for anyone who starts their journey from a station not on VTWC's routes. For example, a journey from Arlesey to Liverpool Lime Street and back using the new cheapest tier of through advances (listed on BRFares as the V2X at £40) totals to £80. Splitting the ticket at Kings Cross to advances from Euston to Lime Street (£15 cheapest tier) and an anytime day return from Arlesey to Kings Cross (£29) totals £59; £21 cheaper than the through advances. If travel on the underground to Euston is needed, changing the return ticket to an Arlesey to Zone U12 only increases the cost to £65, so still £15 cheaper than the through advances. Weekends will be even cheaper still.
