If that were to happen they would also take all the TV money with them and leave, what would be in effect, a UEFA cup.
You say that like it'd be a bad thing! I was talking about the domestic game in any case, so the UEFA cup/Europa league doesn't come into it.

If our top six went off to a European superleague, the residual 14 (plus the top 6 from the 2nd tier) would form a top division which would be far more competitive, if a little less refined. There'd be less money about? Big deal!

I doubt it'll happen in the near future but every so often one of the big boys threatens to. Calling their bluff wouldn't be the worst idea...

Might even give those "sleeping giants" ***snigger*** of Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest a chance to return to the top flight!

It is not - turn away from the evils of the premier league.
I'm sure I'll be able to do that in 12 months time... or 24.

It is not just "the big clubs" who are money-oriented. If what you say was to pass, the football product remaining would be one far less attractive to overseas players (who usually are more skilled than their British counterparts) to add more flair to the remaining home teams and be of a lesser stage for home-based players to compare themselves against those from abroad. The owners of these remaining clubs will still hanker after garnering as much money from outside media sources in order to meet the pay demands of their players and to update their stadium and training grounds.

Long gone indeed are the days of Roy Race and Melchester Rovers, thick knitted woollen scarves of the colours of the teams, large rosettes to pin on the top coats of the supporters, large wooden rattles, etc. etc. etc.

Boundary Park these days never sees hand-painted banners stating:-
"Meat Pie,
Sausage Roll,
Come on Oldham,
Score a goal"

On the bright side, modern technology comes in handy, at Gigg we've developed an app which explains what a "goal" is, although things are so bad the boffins are adding "corner" to it.

A busy day on the manager front as Marco Silva takes charge at Everton and Frank Lampard takes control at Derby.

Most interestingly for me though was that Zinedine Zidane has announced he is leaving Real Madrid. On Saturday Cristiano Ronaldo did state he would make a decision in a few days, he just didn't say it would be about himself. Some are suggesting he had given a 'him or me' ultimatum and obviously won.

Are Manchester United looking to bring a more localised feel to the team by their move to sign Fred. Perhaps their scouts are currently looking for players called Billy, Alf and Tom....:p

There is a precident for such local names, as Ikea led the way with their bookcase called Billy, which I think is still being sold.

FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein, sadly, were relegated from the Swiss Super league in 2017. Nevertheless I enjoyed going to see them play Bala Town at Rhyl on June 29th. Talk about starting the 2017/18 season early. Vaduz won 2-1 at Rhyl and 3-0 at the Rheinpark Stadion.

While this is fun, I do find it a little unfair that tiny teams like Bala get to play in Europe due to geographical luck while hundreds of much more worthy teams from the Premier League downwards don't.

TNS of course is an English team which gets to play in the Champions League by pretending to be Welsh. And just to add to the confusion, TNS got to the semi-final of the Scottish Challenge Cup.

Looks like Villa could be in the clarts: https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/inside-story-behind-aston-villa-12655774

Aston Villa are running a £5-6m monthly deficit on their current outgoings and Tony Xia must sell up - or face administration

FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein

Darlo's most capped international, Franz Burgmeier ( with 7 caps for Liechtenstein whilst with the club) plays for Vaduz. he now has 112 caps.

What's it called? It's called Cumbernauld
With the news today regarding the once mighty Aston Villa, I have mixed feelings here.

When Tony Xia took over, I felt that he had good intentions, but has backfired in a spectacular fashion. According to the statement on the Villa website, he is right that it is not the previous 2 years issues that need to be fixed - it is the issues over the last 10 years that need addressing.

Although the Villa are not a fashionable or sexy team compared to the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal, both Manchester clubs etc, we have done a lot of things throughout since the club was founded in 1874. We've won the FA Cup several times (although the last time was 1957), the League Cup several times, and the most prized trophy of them all the European Cup which every time the Villa have reached the final, they have gone on to win it - albeit the one and only time was in 1982.

Villa have tried keeping up with the Jones's in the transfer market, playing pleasing on the eye football with not necessarily pleasing on the eye results, played totally dreadful and not so pleasing on the eye football with not so pleasing on the eye results, huffed and puffed to no score snore draws, took the lead in the first half with the defence going to sleep around the 80th minute and losing the match, struggled to score extra goals in games that should be closed out.

Should if the administration happen, perhaps the 12 point penalty may help refocus the running of the club and maybe get some of the deadwood moved on.

I hope it's not my exes uncle Fred from Irlam. Lovely man and Man U through and through but he retired from the Kings Regiment years ago. Not sure he is what they are after.

I passed on the opportunity to see that Bala v Vaduz game to go and see Connahs Quay beat HJK Helsinki at Bangor. I'm looking forward to seeing some potentially winnable fixtures for the Welsh teams in the Europa League this year.

Great to see so many premier league plastics whining about the new TV deal. They are moaning they have to buy another subscription service to watch their beloved teams. Didums. The fools seem to miss that this TV money pays for their fancy expensive players and that they have happily lapped up SKY and it hyperbole for many years. Perhaps if they were real fans the wouldn't need to watch the game on TV ;)

I went to see Llandudno away at Gothenburg in June 2016, we got smashed 5-0 but had a great time anyway. Good crowd of lads and the locals were great.

At least for the first season it looks like all the games Amazon will show are in December though so you could just get a 30 day free trial!

I think this is a step towards having all Premier League games televised/streamed.
There are a lot of people who would buy a "season ticket" to watch all their club's games on TV/online. Many people outside the UK can already do this.

The FA won't allow 3PM Saturday games to be televised, so I expect we'll end up with Prem games on Friday night, Saturday 12:30, Saturday 17:30, Saturday 19:45, Monday night, and the rest on a Sunday.
Not much good for those of us who travel some distance to games, and rely on public transport. Evening and Sunday home games are impossible for me without an overnight stay. Maybe we'll be back in the Championship by the time that happens.

I'm surprise about this as you think if Oldham were going to sacked Wellens then they would done it week after they got relegated to League two.

https://www.oldhamathletic.co.uk/news/2018/june/08062018-club-statement-richie-wellens/

Saying that I have hear this may be one of reason into sacking Wellens given it came from inside at club.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...oubles-mystifying-transfers-unpaid-wages.html

I wouldn't be surprise if Paul Scholes doesn't get job given he nearly took job last October and believe currently Latics defender Paul Clarke is favourite become new manager. I just hope it someone who does good job and try and get Oldham back to League One in first attempt.

A well deserved reward. His work for charity and the families of Hillsbrough is incredible. If you haven't seen it i recommend the documentary about him. It is called Kenny and can be found on streaming services. it is a very interesting portrait

Also the only person associated with Liverpool to ever win the Premier League. At Anfield too! ;)

Indeed, all this is going to do is drive the wedge between the privelidged few and the rest. The PL already holds a huge amount of leverage over the FA and this is only going to make it worse.

At the same time I can see why fans are upset even if they have brought it on themselves by accepting and buying into the ads+subscription model of sky. Real competition (which the PL/FA don't seem to care for) is having the same matches available on many broadcasters so the viewer can select. Instead we get three localised monopolies instead of one national one - not that much different for fans. I can also understand that it's stupidly expensive to follow the kind of teams that get broadcast most often on TV

Are Sky and BT going to reduce their prices as a result of not getting that package? Yeah, that question is rhetorical. Instead what we'll no doubt see is Amazon raise the price of Prime for all subscribers meaning those of us that couldn't care less will be subidising their vanity project.[/b][/b]

On the naughty step again.

Which goes to prove what a load of rollocks the honours system is. Pop stars, football players, actresses all getting a gong for doing their job. The coxswain on our lifeboat is worth twenty of them and he hasn't got a gong.

Whilst you are welcome to your opinion it is, in fact, twaddle. May I suggest some research on this topic before posting.

BTW - Perhaps you should have nominated your coxswain for a "gong". Here is the link for you: https://www.gov.uk/honours/nominate-someone-in-the-uk

They're half right, in the sense that the whole concept of an honours system could be argued to be rather silly.

To me if we're going to have an honours system it makes more sense to allow Bobby Moore, Alex Ferguson and Kenny Dalglish to be called "Sir x" than it does for Richard Branson, Tim Waterstone or Chemical Executive Jim Ratcliffe (the last two being new Knights today). But that's just my own opinion, and unless the rules change David Wagner will only be able to call himself KBE anyway.

Speaking of managers/head coaches, was the Paul Clarke that @familyguy99 referred to supposed to be Peter Clarke?

Kenny Dalglish wasn't knighted for being a football player/manager, he was knighted for services to football, charity and the city of Liverpool.

Yeah sorry I do mean Peter Clarke, not sure why name him Paul. Rumours is Clarke doesn't fancy become Latics new manager anyway so seem like he continued playing football for Oldham next season. (Unless he sign for Bury again that is)
